This study aims to investigate the effect of carbon content on the surface nitrogen permeation of 13%Cr-1.8%Al alloyed stainless steels. The surface nitrogen permeation was performed at $1050^{\circ}C{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ in the $1kg/cm^2$ nitrogen gas atmosphere. The nitrogen permeated surface layer of the specimen containing 0.03%C consists of AlN, martensite and retained austenite phases. while the surface layer of the specimen containing 0.14%C appears the $AlFe_3C_x$ phase including former three phases. The specimen containing 0.14%C shows lower total case depth than that containing 0.03%C at the nitrogen permeation temperatures of $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$, while the total case depth of the specimen containing 0.14%C is remarkably increased at the temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$ due to the increase in the retained austenite content. Martensitic phase, AlN and $AlFe_3C_x$ precipitate of the nitrogen permeated surface layer cause to increase the surface hardness of 550~600Hv.
Zero to tension fatigue tests and strain controlled fatigue tests were carried out to find how initial strain induced martensite, ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ affects low and high cycle fatigue behavior and fatigue crack growth mechanisms. Microscopic study and phase analysis were carried out with TEM, SEM, EDAX, Optical Microscope, Ferriscope, and X-ray diffractometry. The amount of Initial ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ was controlled from 0% to 33% by controlling the temperatures for cold working and heat treatment. Lower contents of initial ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ showed higher fatigue resistance in low cycle fatigue but lower fatigue resistance in high cycle fatigue because it is ascribed to the more transformation of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite during low cycle fatigue and higher ductility. In high cycle fatigue, fatigue life is attributed to the strength and phase transformation of austenite into ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ during fatigue was negligible. ${\gamma}$ boundary, ${\gamma}/twin$ boundary, and ${\gamma}/{\alpha}^{\prime}$ boundary were found to be the preferred site of fatigue crack initiation.
This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the mechanical properties and damping capacity of thermo-mechanical treated 316L stainless steel. Dislocations, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensites were formed by thermo-mechanical treatment, and the grain size was changed from micrometer to sub-micrometer by 5-cycled thermo-mechanical treatment. The volume fraction of dislocations, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensites was increased, and grain size of austenite increased and lengthened by the with increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment. In 5-cycled specimens, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite was more than 25% and the less than 5% of volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite was attained. With increasing number of thermo-mechanical treatment, hardness, strength and damping capacity were increased, but elongation was decreased. Damping capacity was increased with increased hardness and strength, but decreased with increased elongation, and this result was the opposite tendency for general metal.
The temperature and the grain boundary precipitation have the great influence on the low-cycle fatigue behavior of austenite stainless steel at elevated temperature. For the purpose of investigating the mechanism concerning the change of fatigue micro crack mode in SUS 316 under various conditions low-cycle fatigue test was carried out at the elevated temperature 600.deg.C, plastic strain range 2% and constant strain rate .5c.p.m. A special attention is given to the observation of intergranular crack initiation. The results obtained are summarized as follows. The low-cycle fatigue behavior of SUS 316 at 600.deg.C is affected by transition of crack initiation mode from intergranular to transgranular. The transition is due to the aging effect, which is caused by grain boundary precipitations of Cr$\_$23/C$\_$6/. Since the intergranular crack initiation is brought about by the grain boundary sliding, the transgranular crack initiates in case that the strengthening of grain boundary due to the precipitation of Cr$\_$23/C$\_$6/ carbides takes place ahead of the intergranular crack initiation.
The impact toughness and SCC resistance of duplex stainless steel weldment made by GTAW, GMAW and SMAW processes was studied. The impact toughness of GTA weld metal was higher than that of GMA weld metal which contained more ferrite phase than GTA weld metal. The impact toughness of SMA weld metal was the lowest due to the harmful effect of inclusions inspite of richness of more ductile austenite phase. From these facts, it can be concluded that the important factors determining the weld metal toughness were the amount of ferrite phase and the cleaness of weld metal. While the SCC resistance of SMA weld metal was lower than that of base metal and nay other weld metal, the SCC resistance of GMA and GTA weld metal was higher than that of base metal but that of all the HAZ's were lower than that of base metal. Therefore, the impact toughness and SCC resistance of GTA and GMA weldment was pretty good as long as phase ratio was propertly controlled. Although the phase ratio was controlled, SMA weld metal could not get a good combination because the lack of shielding from the environment results in a high content of inclusions in weld metal.
Fatigue crack growth rate tests were conducted as a function of temperature, dissolved hydrogen (DH) level, and frequency in a simulated PWR environment. Fatigue crack growth rates increased slightly with increasing temperature in air. However, the fatigue crack growth rate did not change with increasing temperature in PWR water conditions. The DH levels did not affect the measured crack growth rate under the given test conditions. At $316^{\circ}C$, oxides were observed on the fatigue crack surface, where the size of the oxide particles was about $0.2{\mu}m$ at 5 ppb. Fatigue crack growth rate increased slightly with decreasing frequency within the frequency range of 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz in PWR water conditions; however, crack growth rate increased considerably at 0.01 Hz. The decrease of the fatigue crack growth rate in PWR water condition is attributed to crack closure resulting from the formation of oxides near the crack tips at a rather fast loading frequency of 10 Hz.
Electropolishing technology uses an electrochemical reaction and improves surface roughness, glossiness, and corrosion resistance. In this investigation, electropolishing was performed to improve the corrosion resistance of super austenitic stainless steel. As a result of electropolishing, surface roughness (0.16 ㎛) was improved by about 76.5% compared to mechanical polishing (0.68 ㎛). In addition, the electropolished surface was smooth because the average and variance values of the depth histogram were small. Tafel analysis was performed after a potentiodynamic polarization experiment with seawater temperature, and the microstructure was compared and analyzed. The corrosion current density at 30 ℃, 60 ℃, and 90 ℃ was reduced by 0.083 ㎂/cm2, 0.296 ㎂/cm2, and 0.341 ㎂/cm2, respectively. Pitting occurred in the mechanical polished specimen at 30 ℃, but partial intergranular corrosion was observed in the electropolished specimen, and pitting occurred predominantly at both 60 ℃ and 90 ℃. In addition, the damage depths of the electropolished specimen were shallower than those of mechanical polishing at 30 ℃ and 60 ℃, but the opposite result was seen at 90 ℃.
We examined the martensitic transformation kinetics for metastable stainless steel during electrochemical polishing (EP) using different types of electrolytes. Martensite fraction measured with EBSD showed that the electrolyte with high relative permittivity exhibited comparably higher levels of martensitic transformation. The amount of charge build-up on the specimen surface during EP with different types of electrolytes was calculated using COMSOL multiphysics simulations to understand these phase transformation characteristics. The effect of charge build-up-induced stress was analyzed using previously published first-principles calculations. We discovered that the electrolyte with high relative permittivity accumulated a greater amount of charge build-up, resulting in a stronger driving force for stress-induced martensitic transformation.
Austenitic stainless steel (STS304) has been carburized using glow discharge plasma and its microstructure, wear resistance and corrosion property have been investigated. A repeat boost-diffuse carburizing was used as an effective plasma carburizing method. The effective case depth of the plasma carburized specimens was increased with the carbon concentration at the surface area. The specimens prepared by 3 hours plasma carburizing under $600^{\circ}C$ did not have the standard hardness for the effective case depth, but the specimen prepared by 11 hours plasma carburizing at $500^{\circ}C$ had nearly the same hardness with the specimen plasma carburized for 3 hours at $800^{\circ}C$. The wear resistance increased with temperature but the corrosion properties of the specimens prepared over $600^{\circ}C$ decreased rapidly due to the grain boundary sensitization. However, the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ had nearly the same wear resistance with the specimen plasma carburized for 3 hours at $800^{\circ}C$ without deterioration of corrosion property. This could be resulted from the fact that the microstructure of the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ was composed of martensite and austenite, because a partial martensite transformation was occurred only in the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at 50$0^{\circ}C$.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the deformation temperature in high manganese austenitic stainless steel. ${\alpha}$'-martensite was formed with a specific direction by deformation. The volume fraction of the deformation induced martensite was increased by increasing the degree of deformation and decreasing the deformation temperature. With the increase in the deformation, the hardness and tensile strength were increased, while the elongation was rapidly decreased at the initial stage of the deformation, and then gradually decreased. The hardness and tensile strength were increased and the elongation was decreased with adecrease in the deformation temperature. The hardness and tensile strength were strongly controlled by the volume fraction of martensite, but the elongation was controlled by the transformation behavior of the deformation induced martensite.
