  • Cor triatriatum is a rare congenital malformation of the heart in which a diaphragm stretches in a transverse plane through the left pulmonary venous chamber, thus creates two subchambers. The proximal chamber connects with the pulmonary veins, and the distal one has left auricle and the mitral valve. A 3 year old boy who had Cor triatriatum underwent surgical excision of the abnormal diaphragm in March, 1989 in Chungnam University Hospital. An obliquely oriented fibromuscular diaphragm divided the left atrium into a proximal chamber which was connected to the pulmonary veins and a distal chamber which had the atrial appendage and the mitral valve. The opening in the diaphragm was 5 mm in diameter. There were no associated abnormalities. The abnormal diaphragm was completely excised. The postoperative result was excellent.

  • Dissecting aortic aneurysm of ascending aorta is a life threatening condition which requires prompt surgical correction. With deep hypothermic circulatory arrest and retrograde cerebral perfusion via superior vena cava, we could replaced ascending aorta in 4 cases safely. All of 4 cases; femoral artery, right auricle were used as cannulation site. The duration of circulatory arrest were 28, 30, 45, 60 minute in each cases and rectal temperature was 2$0^{\circ}C$ at that time. At the time of retrograde cerebral perfusion, we maintained central venous pressure under 25mmHg. We resected all of dissecting portion and replaced it with Hemashield graft. There were no deaths but two of four reoperated because of bleeding.

  • Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia(Kimura's disease) is a relatively uncommon chronic benign disorder of unknown etiology, predominantly in the head and neck region and associated with lymphadenopathy or salivary gland enlargement. The treatment options are still controversial including medical therapy, surgery, and radiation. Kimura's disease of bilateral postauricular involvement has rarely been reported. We report a male patient with sequentially developed Kimura's disease involving the bilateral postauricular region and was treated by combined surgical excision and steroid therapy.

  • Objective : This study was designed to evaluate the effects of oriental medicine therapy on Vocal cord paralysis with Ramsay Hunt syn. Methods & Result : The clinical data was analyzed on a patient with Vocal cord paralysis with Ramsay Hunt syn. whose main symptoms were right facial palsy, auricle pain, dysphagia and hoarseness. The patient was treated by the acupucture and Herb-medicine.. As the result, symptoms are improved. Conclusion : This result suggest that the acupucture and Herb-medicine. was effective treatment of Vocal cord paralysis. So futher research is needed continuously.

  • Eight species of bithyniids, Bithynia leachi, B. tentaculata, B. siamensis, B. misella, B. kiusiuensis, B. striatula, Bithynia sp. from Nepal and Gabbia australis were collected from 1957 to 1988. The samples were relaxed with pentobarbital and fixed with 70% ethyl alcohol. There was no significant difference in internal structure of soft body, except the male reproductive system. The alimentary canal of the bithyniids consisted of mouth, buccal mass, esophagus, stomach, intestine, rectum and anus. The heart consisted of an auricle and a ventricle, located at left side of the stomach in the visceral hump. The ctenidium comprised 40-70 subtriangular lamellae. Eight ganglia were located around upper esophagus. The female reproductive system comprised ovary, oviduct, spermaaheca, and albumin gland. The male reproductive system was composed of testis, seminal vesicle, prostate gland, vas deferens, penial duct, and penis in order. Male was distinguished externally from the female by a bifid penis.

  • The study was carried out to assess the developmental abnormalities induced by Cytotec in mice during intrauterine life. Pregnant mice were exposed to a single dose of 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 and $0.1{\mu}g$/g BW on day 8 of gestation. Fetuses were recovered on day 18 of gestation. These fetuses were subjected to morphological and morphometric studies. Morphological studies showed abnormalities like anophthalmia, microophthalmia, micromelia and syndactyly. In addition to these, resorptions were also encountered in the higher dose groups. Morphometric analysis showed an overall reduction in body weight, crown rump length, brain and eye circumference, pinna and snout size, length of fore and hind limb and tail size with a significant difference (p<0.001) compared to controls. The outcomes of histological studies revealed some brain defects like hydrocephaly, enlarged third ventricle and undifferentiated ectoneural cells and abnormalities of the heart included right auricle thrombosis and degeneration of trabecular zone.

  • Congenital auricular deformities may be either deformational or malformational. Malformational anomalies present with a skin or cartilage shortage. Two cases with congenital cleft earlobe were presented. A new surgical technique using a two-layered repair with front and back flaps were introduced. She waited to begin wearing earrings until six months after the surgery to prevent possible scar contracture. The patients were followed up for a period ranging from 3 to 14 months. The earlobe volume deficiency was replaced, and acceptable scar maturation was obtained.

  • We experienced 20 cases of acquired aortic diseases during last 1 year [Sep. 1992-Aug. 1993] with newly developed surgical strategies. There were 13 cases[65%] of aortic dissections, 5 cases[25%] of aortic aneurysms and 2 cases of Takayasu arteritis with mean age of 56 + 16 years[range:5-78].In ten cases of patients requiring ascending aortic replacement, femoral artery and femoral vein &/or RA auricle were used as cannulation site. With deep hypothermic circulatory arrest and retrograde cerebral perfusion of cold oxygenated blood via SVC, we can replace the ascending aorta and part of arch if necessary. The mean duration of circulatory arrest was 30 minutes[17-45 min]. In 5 cases of patients who requiring descending and thoracoabdominal aorta replacement, we used simple aortic crossclamping under normothermia with no heparin. The mean duration of aortic crossclamping was 37 minutes[25-50 min].The results of operation were as follow:Operative mortality[2 cases, 10%], delayed cerebral infarct[1], low extremity weakness[1] and intraoperative myocardial infarct[1]. There are no delayed complication or mortality as yet.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of auricular acupressure on postpartum depression and fatigue among early postpartum mothers. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Forty early postpartum mothers were recruited from two postpartum care centers and randomly assigned to experimental group (n=20) and control group (n=20). The experimental group received the nursing intervention of auricular acupressure. Results: There were significant differences in postpartum depression and fatigue between the two groups. The participants in the experimental group showed significantly decreased scores of postpartum depression (z=-2.51, p=.012) and fatigue (t=5.36, p<.001). Conclusion: The nursing intervention programs using the auricular acupressure is effective in reducing depression and fatigue of early postpartum mothers. The findings will be useful for the health promotion among early postpartum mothers.
