  • This study aims at establishing an digital signal processing technique to control 3-D sound localization, especially focusing our eyes on the role of information provided by Head-Related Transfer Function(HRTF). In order to clarify the cues to control the auditory distance perception, two conventional models named Hirsch-Tahara model and auditory parallax model were examined. As a result, it was shown that both models have limitations to universally explain the auditory distance perception. Hence, the auditory parallax model was extended so as to apply in broader cases of auditory distance perception. The results of the experiment by simulating HRTFs based on the extented parallax model showed that the cues provided by the new model were almost sufficient to control the perception of auditory distance from an actual sound source located within about 2 m.

  • The human auditory system is appropriate for the "constant Q"system. The STFT (Short Time Fourier Transform) is not suitable for the auditory perception model since it has constant bandwidth. In this paper, the CWT (continuous wavelet transform) is employed for the auditory filter model. In the CWT, the frequency resolution can be adjusted for auditory sensation models. The proposed CWT is applied to the modeling of the JNVF. In addition, other signal processing methods such as STFT, VER-FFT and VFR-STFT are discussed. Among these methods, the model of JNVF (Just Noticeable Variation in Frequency) by using the CWT fits in with the JNVF of auditory model although it requires quite a long time.

  • In this study, the recognition experiments for Korean vowel are performed using peripheral auditory model. In addition, for the purpose of objective comparison, the recognition experiments are performed by extracting LPC cepstrum coefficients for the same speech data. The results are as follows. 1) The time and the frequency responses of the auditory model show that important features of input signal are involved in the responses of inner ear and auditory nerve. 2) The recognition results for Korean vowel show that the recognition rate by auditory model output is higher than the recognition rate by LPC cepstrum coefficients. 3) The adaptation phenomenon of auditory nerve provides useful characteristics for the discrimination of vowel signal.

  • In the conventional speech processing, the technique of FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) is usually applied to the finite number of samples within the window of specified length using the fixed sampling rate. In this case, the temporal resolution is dependent upon the length of window while the spectral resolution is dependent upon the number of samples within the window. Thus, once the temporal resolution is determined the spectral resolution is also determined or vice versa. To resolve this type of dilemma, a new type of bank-filter similar to the characteristics of cochlear model needs to be considered. Furthermore, wide dynamic range of cochlea certainly helps the stable extraction of speech features. In the paper, the human auditory system will be briefly introduced and previous works on auditory preprocessors based on cochlear model will be reviewed. As a conclusion, the design considerations of auditory preprocessors based on cochlear model will be addressed.

  • In this study, we performed the recognition test on Korean vowel using peripheral auditory model. In addition, for the purpose of objective comparision, the recognition test is performed by extracting LPC cepstrum coefficients from the same data. And the same speech data are mixed with the Guaussian white noise quantitatively, then we repeated the same test, too. So we verified that this auditory model has a adaptability on noise.

  • Auditory and language train for the hearing-impaired is an essential course improving conversational capability with non-deaf and accompanying the financial burden and the physical fatigue of parents or a teacher. To reduce these problems, web-based training contents have been developed. But these contents have been developed without consideration of individual difference such as various levels of residual hearing and the learning capability of hearing-impaired. Therefore, it is important that appropriate training progress for each hearing-impaired should be designed by evaluating and analyzing the personal status, residual hearing, learning capability and training achievement. This paper suggests auditory and language training service model for the hearing-impaired, which is planning and managing an auditory and learning training based on personal evaluation. In addition, this paper suggests a design method for a serious game content planing based on this service model.

  • People with auditory processing disorders(APD) do not exactly understand what they hear with normal hearing levels because of difficulties in the processing of auditory information in auditory nervous system. The purposes of this study are to investigate intervention strategies suggested by current literatures and to develop a guide map for APD intervention. The problem based intervention strategies are customized to the specific deficits of a subtype of Buffalo model and Bellis/Ferre model and general intervention strategies are recommended with compensatory strategy, auditory training, environmental modification and so on. Multidisciplinary team should determine and provide various intervention strategies to improve auditory capabilities of a child with APD intensively and persistently. APD intervention guide map is organized with four steps. It helps clinicians and teachers related with the intervention of APD find appropriate intervention strategies and process in order to reduce difficulties of a child with APD and a suspected APD.

  • Auditory Models that are capable of achieving human performance would provide a basis for realizing effective speech processing systems. Perceptual invariance to adverse signal conditions (noise, microphone and channel distortions, room reverberations) may provide a basis for robust speech recognition and speech coder with high efficiency. Auditory model that simulates the part of auditory periphery up through the auditory nerve level and new distance measure that is defined as angle between vectors are described.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive noise suppression system based on human auditory model to enhance speech signal that is degraded by various background noises. The proposed system detects voiced and unvoiced sections for each frame and implements the adaptive auditory process, then reduces the noise speech signal using neural network including amplitude component and phase component. Base on measuring signal-to-noise ratios, experiments confirm that the proposed system is effective for speech signal that is degraded by various noises.
