As an activity of one working group for the Good Practice program at Kumamoto University, we proposed a questionnaire survey on the degree in which students understand the uppermost points of importance in their classes in addition to the usual type of class questionnaire. Each class lists three uppermost points of importance which are essential for understanding the class content. The degree of understanding is classified into four levels: full, most, insufficient, and not at all understandings. Through the analysis of questionnaire replies, the degree of understanding for bachelor students in the Department of Engineering was discovered to be meaningfully affected by the degree of difficulty, the effectiveness of audiovisual aids, self-study time, and class attendance.

Audiovisual-based human emotion recognition can be considered a good approach for multimodal humancomputer interaction. However, the optimal multimodal information fusion remains challenges. In order to overcome the limitations and bring robustness to the interface, we propose a framework of automatic human emotion recognition system from speech and face display. In this paper, we develop a new approach for fusing information in model-level based on the relationship between speech and face expression to detect automatic temporal segments and perform multimodal information fusion.

In this paper, an adaptive algorithm is proposed in streaming MPEG-4 contents with fluctuating resource amount such as throughput of network conditions. MPEG-4 is the international standard for audiovisual presentation which is composed of object based media streams. The proposed technique provides the media stream corresponding an object with multiple media streams with different qualities and bit rate in order to support object based scalability to the MPEG-4 content. In addition, making the object streams adaptable, a feasible stream set selected from the multiple streams for transmission with optimal quality in the form of the current status.

There hasn't been a study searching for various methods of instruction and orientation in the use of a college library. By searching through the western literature in this field from 1961, I was amazed by the vast literature and enormous study done on it. I tried to introduce the most important articles in this field which can help mold our methods of library instruction. There has been quite a few cries for the use of new methods, of newer media, for increased number of students. Promising future lies in the area of programmed instruction and audiovisual aids to teaching, which should be developed into course-related library instruction.

시청각기록물은 기존 문서기록물과 달리 생생한 현장감을 전달할 수 있고 사용자들의 관심을 끌 수 있는 장점이 있다. 그러나 전자시청 각기록물은 원본과 똑같은 품질의 사본들이 많이 만들어지게 되어 위변조가 쉽고 불법복제 및 배포가 가능하기 때문에 기록물관리에 주의를 기울여야 한다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위한 방안들로서 DRM과 워터마킹기술이 주목을 받게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 시청각기록물 중에서 동영상 시청각 기록물에 적용 가능한 워터마킹 기술을 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제시한 워터마킹 기술은 원본영상신호의 복제신호를 추출하여 워터마크 정보를 삽입하는 방법을 취했다. 전자시청각 기록물 출처확인 및 무단배포에 따른 저작권 권리 추적을 위한 기술로서 다양한 실험을 통하여 가능성을 점검하였다. 원본 신호에서 추출된 신호를 이용하여 워터마크 정보를 삽입하기 때문에 화질훼손이 적고 압축알고리즘에 강인한 특성을 갖고 있다. 실험결과를 통해서 원본보존을 중요시하는 시청각기록물관리 분야에서 적용 가능성을 제시하였다.

The ultimate goal of multimedia in bio-signal research is to approach multimedia contents through bio-signal. Hence it is important to interpret user's emotions by analyzing his or her bio-signals. In this paper, we construct ERP task of oddball component to analyze EEG signal between normal stimuli and fear stimuli and measure EEG during ERP task. The results from extracted ERP component show that there is a difference in N200 in visual stimuli, P300 in auditory stimuli, and N100 and P300. Moreover, there are larger changes in audiovisual stimuli, indicating that users recognize greater fear of crime when visual and auditory stimuli are simultaneously presented.

Many overlay texts are artificially superimposed on the broadcasting videos by humans. These texts provide additional information to the audiovisual content. Especially, the overlay text in news videos contains concise and direct description of the content. Therefore, it is most reliable clue for constructing a news video indexing system. To make the automatic person indexing of interview video in the TV news program, this paper proposes the method to only detect the name text line among the whole overlay texts in one frame. The experimental results on Korean television news videos show that the proposed framework efficiently detects the overlaid name text line.

There is a need for education that can be effectively education rather than one-sided audiovisual-oriented education. Serious games capable of contextual design and iterative training of various scenarios are easy to use and spread contents. The effects of safety education in childhood and adolescence, which are the most active periods of cognitive development, are most effective compared to other age group. The purpose of this study is to propose the guideline and components of the contents development for youth safety education using functional games.

Since the launch of the GATT system, one of the most controversial topics in trade liberalization has been the conflict between culture and trade. The sticking point has been the necessity of cultural exceptions in trade rules. Some countries do not wish to allow further exceptions to basic principles even in cultural industry, while many other countries make their efforts to obtain "cultural safety valve." The latter group asserts that it is indispensable for the protection of cultural identity, whereas the former seems to doubt the truth of the assertion. That is because cultural policy measure possibly constitute a means of arbitrary or unjustifiable discrimination between countries, or a disguised barriers to trade in cultural products. Unfortunately, cultural exceptions still remain unresolved in the WTO, the successor to the GATT. This paper is to review the history and rules of multilateral trading system on cultural industry, address the critical issues to deal with in the DDA negotiations, and lastly provide some perspectives on the appropriate shape of the cultural safety valve.

With the widespread use of multifunctional devices, haptic sensation is a promising type of sensory channel because it can be applied as an additional channel for transferring information for traditional audiovisual user interfaces. Many researchers have shed new light on non-contact haptic displays for their potential use on ambient and natural user interfaces. This paper introduces several of the latest schemes for creating a mid-air haptic sensation based on their transfer medium: ultrasonic phased arrays, air nozzles, thermal and plasmonic lasers, and electromagnets. We describe the principles used in delivering haptic sensation in each technology, as well as state-of-the-art technologies from leading research groups, and brief forecasts for further research directions.
