  • We investigated quench distribution in AU/YBCO thin film meander lines with a heater. Quench distribution during faults is important for superconducting fault current limter applications, because uniform quench allows application of higher voltages across the meander lines. AU/YBCO thin films grown on sapphire substrates were patterned into meander lines by photolithography. Gold films grown on the rear sides of the substrates were also patterned into meander lines, and used as heaters. Meander lines on the front and the rear sides were connected in parallel. The meander lines were subjected to simulated AC fault currents for quench measurements during faults. They were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment for effective cooling. Resistance of the AU/YBCO meander lines initially increased more rapidly with the rear heater than without, and consequently the fault current was limited more. The resistance subsequently became similar, The resistance distribution was more uniform with the heater, especially during the initial quench. Quench was completed more uniformly and significantly earlier. This resulted in uniform distribution of dissipated power. These results could be explained with the concept of quench propagation, which was accelerated by heat transfer across the substrate from the rear heater.

  • Au was electrolessly deposited on polycarbonate (PC) membranes (0.1 μm pores) at the air/water interface. It was found that the Au nanotube dimension can be controlled by adjusting the plating temperature and the solution composition. Interfacial deposition of Au at relatively low temperatures (4℃) produced long nanotubes, which run through the whole membrane thickness with small openings. Increase of plating temperatures resulted in the decrease of nanotube lengths and Au film thicknesses. It was also disclosed that the inside-diameter of Au nanotubes can be controlled with negligible variations in length by changing the composition of a plating solution.

  • Recent ULSI and multilevel structure trends in microelectronic devices minimize the line width down to less than $0.25{\mu}m$, which results in high current densities in thin film interconnections. Under high current densities, an EM(electromigration) induced failure becomes one of the critical problems in a microelectronic device. This study is to improve thin film interconnection materials by investigating the EM characteristics in Ag, Cu, Au, and Al thin films, etc. EM resistance characteristics of Ag, Cu, Au, and Al thin films with high electrical conductivities were investigated by measuring the activation energies from the TTF (Time-to-Failure) analysis. Optical microscope and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis were used for the failure analysis in thin films. Cu thin films showed relatively high activation energy for the electromigration. Thus Cu thin films may be potentially good candidate for the next choice of advanced thin film interconnection materials where high current density and good EM resitance are required. Passivated Al thin films showed the increased MTF(Mean-time-to-Failure) values, that is, the increased EM resistance characteristics due to the dielectric passivation effects at the interface between the dielectric overlayer and the thin film interconnection materials.

  • The activities of Au-modified Cu electrodes toward glucose oxidation are evaluated according to their fabrication conditions and physico-chemical properties. The Au-modified Cu electrodes are fabricated by the galvanic displacement of Au on a Cu substrate and the characteristics of the Au particles are controlled by adjusting the displacement time. From the glucose oxidation tests, it is found that the Au modified Cu has superior activity to the pure Au or Cu film, which is evidenced by the negative shift in the oxidation potential and enhanced current density during the electrochemical oxidation. Though the activity of the Au nanoparticles is a contributing factor, the enhanced activity of the Au-modified Cu electrode is due to the increased oxidation number of Cu through the electron transfer from Cu to more electronegative Au. The depletion of electron in Cu facilitates the oxidation of glucose. The stability of the Au-modified Cu electrode was also studied by chronoamperometry.

  • In this study, Au thin films were etched with a $Cl_2/Ar$ gas combination in an in an inductively coupled plasma. The etch properties were measured for different gas mixing ratios of $Cl_2/(Cl_2+Ar)$ while the other process conditions were fixed at rf power (700 W), dc bias voltage (150 V), and chamber pressure (15 mTorr). The highest etch rate of the Au thin film was 3500 $\AA/min$ and the selectivity of Au to $SiO_2$ was 4.38 at a $Cl_2/(Cl_2+Ar)$ gas mixing ratio of 0.2. The surface reaction of the etched Au thin films was investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. There is Au-Cl bonding by chemical reaction between Cl and Au. During the etching of Au thin films in $Cl_2/Ar$ plasma, Au-Cl bond is formed, and these products can be removed by the physical bombardment of Ar ions. In addition, Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) were investigated to analyze radical density of Cl and Ar in plasma. The profile of etched Au investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

  • A conductive PANI solution was successfully fabricated by doping with camphorsulfonic acid and the polymerization of aniline and the confirmation of doping were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. In organic thin film transistors, PANI gate electrodes were spin-coated on a PES substrate and their conductivity variations were monitored by a 4-probe method with different annealing temperatures. The surface properties of PANI thin films were investigated by an AFM and an optical microscope, OTFTs with PANI gate electrode had characteristics of carrier mobility as large as 0.15 $cm^2$/Vs and on/off ratio of $2.4{\times}10^6$, Au gate OTFTs with the same configuration were fabricated to investigate the effect of polymer gate electrode for the comparison of device performances. We could obtain the comparable performances of PANI devices to those of Au gate devices, resulting in an excellent alternative as an electrode in flexible OTFTs instead of an expensive Au electrode.

  • Temperature and atmosphere dependence of electrical conduction of the metal Cu, Ag, Au films, vaccum evaporated on glass, was investigated. The structural changes of the metal films were examined by SEM and high temperature XRD. The electrical resistance slightly increased with initial temperature increase up to the inflection point and decreased to minimum value, after this rapidly increased with further temperature increased below minimum. These phenomena were caused by the thermally induced film failure as a result of the mass transport. The temperature for the film failure increased in the order of O2, Air, Vacuum, N2, Ar in Cu, Ag films and Air, Vacuum, N2, Ar in Au film. The increase of resistance at the lower temperature range was attributed to the lattice distortion by disordered crystal structure, while the decreasing resistance was attributed to the removal of structural defects and film densification.

  • A poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethyene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymer thin film having ${\beta}$ phase was prepared by sol-gel method. The electrical properties of the film were studied to evaluate the possibility for appling to a ferroelectric random access memory. In order to characterize its electrical properties, we produced a MFS (metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor) structure by evaporation of Au electrodes. The C-V (capacitance-voltage) measurement revealed that the Au/P(VDF-TrFE)/Si structure with a 4 wt% film had a memory window width of about 0.5V for a bias voltage sweep of 1V.

  • In this paper, the etching of Au films using photoresist masks on Si substrates was investigated using a capacitively coupled plasma etch reactor. The advantages of plasma etch techniques over current methods for Au metalization include the ability to simplify the metalization process flow with respect to resist lift-off schemes, and the ability to cleanly remove etched material without sidewall redeposition, as is seen in ion milling. The etch properties were measured for different gas mixing ratios of CF4/Ar, and chamber pressures while the other conditions were fixed. According to statistical design of experiment (DOE), etching process of Au films was characterized and also 20 samples were fabricated followed by measuring etch rate, selectivity and etch profile. There is a chemical reaction between CF4 and Au. Au- F is hard to remove from the surface because of its high melting point. The etching products can be sputtered by Ar ion bombardment.

  • Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) have shown superior characteristics and are expected to dominate the nextgeneration flat-panel displays. Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays, however, have stringent demands on the performance of the backplane. In this paper, the development of thin-film transistors (TFTs) based on indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) on both Gen 1 and 6 glasses, and their decent characteristics, which meet the AMOLED requirements, are shown. Further, several display prototypes (e.g., 2.4" AMOLED, 2.4" transparent AMOLED, and 32" AMLCD) using IGZO TFTs are demonstrated to confirm that they can indeed be strong candidates for the next-generation TFT technology not only of AMOLED but also of AMLCD (active-matrix liquid crystal display).
