In the study, the effect of flipped classroom approach applied to chemistry I class in a foreign language high school was explored. Flipped classroom was applied to 176 grade 10 students (43 boys and 133 girls) from a foreign language high school located in a metropolitan city for one semester and its instructional effects were studied in terms of cognitive and affective aspects. Before the class, students were provided with guiding worksheets and asked to summarize contents. Within the class, various student-centered activities were adopted. After the flipped classroom for one semester, mid-term and final-term exam scores were analyzed, and students' attitude toward chemistry class and flipped classroom were surveyed. Analysis on the exam scores showed the possibility for positive impact on students' achievement and perceptions on chemistry class including flipped classroom approach. Moreover, some students mentioned flipped classroom was helpful for self-directed learning and meta-cognition. Based on these results, educational implications were discussed.
In this study, science teachers' perception and attitude toward nanotechnology are examined through questionnaires gathered from 134 secondary science teachers. As a result, the study shows that science teachers have high perceptiveness. However, they do not understand specific information on nanotechnology correctly. Science teachers have positive attitudes toward nanotechnology and they have perceived risks of nanotechnology as well as benefits of nanotechnology. Science teachers show positive attitudes toward the application of nanotechnology, whereas they show negative attitudes toward personal information chip and nano-taste enhancer. Science teachers are exposed to nanotechnology via various sources such as TV and internet, whereas teachers rarely get information on nanotechnology-related concepts in textbooks and teaching resources. Science teachers have perceived many textbooks do not introduce enough nanotechnology-related concepts. Many teachers try to explain the nanotechnology when textbooks include nanotechnology-related concepts, whereas quite a few of teachers do not introduce the nanotechnology-related concepts in class.
In this study, the effects of grouping by extraversion and introversion in POE learning applied to elementary science class on students' achievement, the perception of learning environment and the attitude toward science instruction were investigated. Ninety-five 5th graders were assigned to the control group and the experimental groups, and taught about acid and base for 9 class hours. In the experimental groups, the homogeneous small group was composed of four introverts or four extroverts, and the heterogeneous small group was composed of two introverts and two extroverts. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the homogeneous group performed better than the control group in the application subtest of the achievement test. Significant difference in learning difficulty was found between the heterogeneous group and the control group. In the attitude toward science class, significant interaction effect was found between the instruction and the extraversion/introversion.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of PBL (Problem-based Learning) strategy applied to the "Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory" class. Especially, the changes in 'self-directed learning ability' and 'attitudes toward science' of undergraduate students were examined. In addition, perception on PBL problem and the PBL classes were investigated. The results of this study were as follows: First, after the course, 'self-directed learning ability' and 'attitude toward science' of students were significantly improved (p < .05). There were significant improvements in every sub-categories except 'self-confidence as a learner' for 'self directed learning ability' and every sub-categories except 'usefulness of science' for 'attitude toward science'. Second, the students expressed that PBL strategy provided opportunities to learn self-directively and responsibly, but the process of defining the problem was difficult. Finally on the survey toward PBL strategy, the students responded that PBL problems were authentic and helpful to learn problem solving ability. In conclusion, PBL laboratory course is effective for developing self-directed learning ability and positive attitude toward science.
In this study, high school students' perceptions and attitudes toward nanotechnology are examined through questionnaires gathered from 1704 high school students (five general high schools and two science high schools). As a result, the study shows that high school students have generally high perceptions and positive attitudes toward nanotechnology. Science high school students show more positive attitudes and correct knowledge toward nanotechnology rather than general high school students do. High school students get information on nanotechnology via various sources such as TV and internet, whereas they have rarely perceived to get information on nanotechnology in textbooks and science class. They think that newspaper and TV programs are proper methods to introduce new science technology and get information on the advanced science and technology through the internet and science teachers. High school students show positive attitudes toward the application of nanotechnology, whereas they show negative attitudes toward personal information chips and nano-taste enhancer. And they trust nanotechnology researchers and science teachers, whereas they rarely trust about government, public organizations, and internet.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of science classes using smart devices that combine augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) on the scientific attitude of middle school gifted students. In addition, it is intended to find out the perception of science classes using these smart devices. In addition to actual experiments, a science class program that allows students to experience science experiments virtually using AR and VR was applied to 15 middle school gifted students. Before and after the application of the program, the questionnaire is to investigate the interest in scientific classes, the attitude toward science exploration, and the professional interest in science, and the recognition of classes that combine AR and VR. In addition, through in-depth interviews, the perceptions of gifted students was accurately investigated. As a result of this study, the content of science classes and instructors showed high class satisfaction, but the smart devices and applications used during the science classes showed lower class satisfaction than others. As a result of comparing and analyzing the pre-post of gifted students, interest in science class, attitude toward science inquiry, and professional interest in science increased significantly among the sub-areas of the scientific attitude test. As a result of analyzing free responses and indepth interviews, gifted students responded with the advantage that classes using smart devices that combine AR and VR can be tested quickly and safely for a short time compared to actual experiments. On the other hand, they responded with low completeness of the application and dizziness when operating virtual reality. Based on this, implications for the development of applications and instructional programs using advanced technologies that can experience realistically limited scientific experiments such as experimental preparation, class time, and risk factors were obtained.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of research project activities using the science writing heuristic on science inquiry abilities and attitudes toward science in high school students. For this purpose, we conducted the research project activities using the science writing heuristic consisting of questioning, experimental design, observation, argument and evidence, reading, and reflection steps for 73 students of the second year of science core course in high school in Jeonnam. In order to analyze the effects of the program, we surveyed the scientific inquiry ability and attitude toward science, investigated the perception of the research project class applying science writing heuristic, and conducted interviews when there was difficulty in interpreting the results. And the results of this study are as follows. First, among the science inquiry abilities, the score of Reasoning, Hypothesis setting, Finding variables, Operational definition, Experimental design, Graphing and data interpretation, Generalization was significantly improved statistically (p<.05), but the score of Expectation was not statistically significant (p>.05). Second, among the attitudes toward science, the score of 'Leisure interest in science', 'Enjoyment of science lessons', 'Career interest in science' was significantly improved statistically (p<.05). And the score of 'Attitude to scientific inquiry' decreased but it's not significant statistically. The high school research project applying science writing heuristic had a positive effect on scientific inquiry ability and scientific attitude but it could be burden to students because it is led by students in a form different from general science class for a long time. And so continuous study on research project that minimize these disadvantages and maximize their merits is needed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of small group learning using smart devices in science classes on students' achievement, learning motivation, attitude toward science lessons, and perception of small group learning using smart devices. Four 11th-grade classes (N=133) at a coed high school in Seoul were randomly assigned to a control group and a treatment group. The intervention of small group learning using smart devices emphasized collaborative writing on activity sheet. The students were taught about acid, base, and neutralization reaction for six class periods. After the instructions, an achievement test, the learning motivation test, the attitude toward science lessons test, and a questionnaire on the perception of small group learning using smart devices were administered. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that there was a statistically significant interaction effect by their previous chemistry achievement in the achievement test scores. Only low-level students in small group learning using smart devices significantly improved their achievement probably by having the opportunities to get help from high-level students. The adjusted means of the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group in learning motivation and attitude toward science lessons. Students' perceptions of small group learning using smart devices tended to be positive. Educational implications of this study are discussed.
In this study, the effects of writing a weekly report on the students' self-directed learning, the attitudes toward science, and the academic achievements were examined. Two hundred and three students, second graders of a high school participated. Experimental group performed writing a weekly report, while the comparative group performed regular science lessons. The results of this study are as follows: First, MSLQ test showed that there was statistically significant difference in the self-directed learning skills(p<.05). For sub-factors of motivation region, such as internal goals, extrinsic goals, learning beliefs, task value, and self-efficacy and for sub-factors of learning strategy region, such as meta-cognition, peer learning, time management, critical thinking, and demonstrations showed statistically significant results. Second, TOSRA test showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the attitudes toward science (p>.05). However, for sub-factors, such as scientific inquiry and joy to science class showed statistically significant results. Third, there was no statistically significant difference in the academic achievement in Chemistry I class (p>.05). However, top and low achievement level showed statistically significant results.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the understanding of nature of scientific knowledge and attitudes toward scientific inquiry of pre-service science teachers experienced open inquiry. The study was conducted in 10 sessions of open inquiry-based chemistry experiment. The subjects were 40 pre-service science teachers recruited from the experiment class. They received pre-test, mid-test, post-test on understanding nature of scientific knowledge and attitudes toward scientific inquiry of open inquiry activities. 20 pre-service science teachers among them participated in the interview. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in pre-service science teachers' understanding of the nature of the scientific knowledge (p<.05). In particular, understanding of creativity and sociality parts improved gradually. Second, pre-service science teachers' attitude toward scientific inquiry had changed negatively until the middle of the semester, and then changed positively later. The post-test score was significantly higher than the mid-test score (p<.05).
