The attenuation of starlight by dust in galactic environments is investigated through models of radiative transfer in a spherical, clumpy interstellar medium (ISM). We show that the attenuation curves are primarily determined by the wavelength dependence of absorption rather than by the underlying extinction (absorption+scattering) curve; the observationally derived attenuation curves cannot constrain a unique extinction curve unless the absorption or scattering efficiency is specified. Attenuation curves consistent with the Calzetti curve are found by assuming the silicate-carbonaceous dust model for the Milky Way (MW), but with the $2175{\AA}$ bump suppressed or absent. The discrepancy between our results and previous work that claimed the Small Magellanic Cloud dust to be the origin of the Calzetti curve is ascribed to the difference in adopted albedos; we use the theoretically calculated albedos whereas the previous ones adopted empirically derived albedos from observations of reflection nebulae. It is found that the model attenuation curves calculated with the MW dust are well represented by a modified Calzetti curve with a varying slope and UV bump strength. The strong correlation between the slope and UV bump strength, as found in star-forming galaxies at 0.5 < z < 2.0, is well reproduced if the abundance of the UV bump carriers is assumed to be 30-40% of that of the MW-dust; radiative transfer effects lead to shallower attenuation curves with weaker UV bumps as the ISM is more clumpy and dustier. We also argue that some of local starburst galaxies have a UV bump in their attenuation curves, albeit very weak.
Background: Industrial X-ray CT system is normally applied to non-destructive testing (NDT) for industrial product made from metal. Furthermore there are some special CT systems, which have an ability to inspect nuclear fuel assemblies or rocket motors, using high power and high energy (more than 6 MeV) pulsed X-ray source. In these case, pulsed X-ray are produced by the electron linear accelerator, and a huge number of photons with a wide energy spectrum are produced within a very short period. Consequently, it is difficult to measure the X-ray energy spectrum for such accelerator-based X-ray sources using simple spectrometry. Due to this difficulty, unexpected images and artifacts which lead to incorrect density information and dimensions of specimens cannot be avoided in CT images. For getting highly precise CT images, it is important to know the precise energy spectrum of emitted X-rays. Materials and Methods: In order to realize it we investigated a new approach utilizing the Bayesian estimation method combined with an attenuation curve measurement using step shaped attenuation material. This method was validated by precise measurement of energy spectrum from a 1 MeV electron accelerator. In this study, to extend the applicable X-ray energy range we tried to measure energy spectra of X-ray sources from 6 and 9 MeV linear accelerators by using the recently developed method. Results and Discussion: In this study, an attenuation curves are measured by using a step-shaped attenuation materials of aluminum and steel individually, and the each X-ray spectrum is reconstructed from the measured attenuation curve by the spectrum type Bayesian estimation method. Conclusion: The obtained result shows good agreement with simulated spectra, and the presently developed technique is adaptable for high energy X-ray source more than 6 MeV.

A seismic attenuation formula is derived from the intensity maps of medium sized four earthquakes that occurred in the southern part of Korean peninsula. In order to obtain the seismic attenuation formula, the the coefficients of four attenuation equations representing the intensity maps are integrated using the proper weighting factors depending on the credibility of the data are assigned to. The proposed formula shows the trend of attenuation similar to the ones for the Eastern North America for the region within the epicentral distance of 200km, but produces higher attenuation at farther distances. Though the attenuation curve is not derived from the instrumental data, the result could be a useful tool for the analysis of seismic hazard in Korean peninsula.
This paper presents a practical method for estimation of average temperature in the permanent magnet (PM) of electric machine by using finite element analysis (FEA) and dynamo load experiment. First of all, the temperature effect of PM to the torque has been employed by FEA in order to evaluate the Temperature-Torque characteristic curve. The 1st order polynomial equation which is torque attenuation coefficient is derived by the FEA result of the Temperature-Torque curve. Next, torque saturation test with constant current condition is performed by dynamo load experiment. Then, the temperature trend can be estimated by adding the initial starting temperature using the torque attenuation coefficient and torque saturation curve. Lastly, estimated temperature is validated by infrared thermometer which measures temperature of PM surface. The comparison between the estimated result and experimental result gives a good agreement within a deviation of maximum $8^{\circ}C$.

LCL filters are widely used in three-phase PWM converter for its advantages of small volume, low cost and inhibition of high frequency current harmonic. However, it is difficult to optimize its design because its parameters are mutually influenced while the value of each parameter for LCL filter has impacts on the converter's cost and size. In this paper, the target of optimization is to minimize the parameter values of LCL filter, and an optimization method for parameters of LCL filter of three-phase PWM converter based on least square method is proposed. With this method, a quantitative calculation of the harmonic component of the converter’s side phase voltage is performed first, and then the quantitative relationship between phase voltage harmonics and grid phase current harmonics is analyzed. After that, the attenuation requirement of each harmonic is obtained by taking into account the requirements for each harmonic component of grid current. Then according to the optimization objective, the objective function with minimum harmonic attenuation deviation is established, and least squares method is adopted for three-dimensional global searching of parameters for LCL filter. Thus, the designed harmonic attenuation curve approximates the minimum attenuation requirements, and the optimized LCL filter parameters are obtained. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is verified by the experiments.

To propose a useful modelling method for an actual muffler, the noise attenuation effects of muffler was investigated according to the flow condition and the hole shape of tubes. In this work, the finite element method was used to calculate the transmission loss of muffler, The noise attenuation characteristics of four different types of muffler in the hole shape of tubes were compared mutually to find a more simple equivalent model. Analytical results showed that the overall value of transmission loss increases and the peaks of transmission loss curve shift to the low frequency with mean flow for the given muffler, Also the noise attenuation characteristics of the equivalent model having the split holes is almost the same as those of the actual muffler having many circular holes.
The quality of radiation for a high energy x-ray beam can be specified by its attenuation curve in a selected material. The inverse Laplace transform of the attenuation curve can be used as an approximate indication of the energy spectrum of the beam. We have made a comparative investigation of the estimated spectrum obtained by the Laplace transform analysis of the transmitted exposure data measured in an absorption study of a 6MV x-ray beam. Two of existing transform pair models have been investicated and discussed.

In this paper the theoretical analysis of the site attenuation was made on the concept of mutual impedance of antennas and the cause of characteristic hump in the site attenuation curve below 80 MHz is explained. The deviation between the FCC site attenuatios and the experimental results of an ideal open area test site at low frequencies(below 80MHz) was found to be the mutual coupling effects of the antennas under the FCC's measurement conditions. It seems desirable that the site attenuations curve of FCC document be revicused to the theoretical curves presented in this paper is long as the FCC's measurement conditions are to the applied.

This paper presents the classical site attenuation characteristics of a forced resonant electromagnetic interference (EMI) dipole antenna for frequencies below 80 MHz. The coupled integral equations for unknown current distribution are solved by the Galerkin's method of moments with piecewise sinusoidal functions. The results show that the forced resonant type EMI dipole antenna for frequencies below 80 MHz can be used effectively for measuring the classical site attenuation of horizontal polarization. The theoretical site attenuation curves presented can be used as reference curves for evaluating the performance of an open area test site.

This paper presents the normalized site attenuation characteristics for frequencies below 80 ㎒ using forced resonant type EMI dipole antennas. The coupled integral equations for unknown current distribution are solved by the Galerkin's method of moments with piecewise sinusoidal functions. The results show that the forced resonant type EMI dipole antenna for frequencies below 80 ㎒ can be used effectively for the measuring normalized site attenuation. The calculated normalized site attenuation curves for the forced resonant type EMI dipole antenna are useful in determining the suitability of open area test sites.
