The strong ground motion data recorded in the Sino-Korea Craton are analysed toobtain attenuation relations valid for 5 < M < 8, r < 400 km applicable to the Korean Peninsula. The result is logA : -1.83+0.386M- log${\gamma}$-0.0015${\gamma}$ where A is peak horizontal acceleration in g, M is surface-wave magnitude, and r is hypocentral distance in km. Our result is compared with the existing attenuation relations of Western North America and Eastern North America and the prior predictive equations for the Southern part of Korean Peninsula. Our result compares better with those of North America than those of the Southern part of the Korean Peninsula. More theoretical and empirical studies are required for better attenuation relations appropriate for the Korean Peninsula.

Strong motion attenuation relationship represents a comprehensive trend of ground shakings at sites with distances from the source, geology, local soil conditions, and others. It is necessary to develop an attenuation relationship with careful considerations of characteristics of the target area for reliable seismic hazard/risk assessments. In the study, observed ground motions from the January 2007 magnitude 4.9 Odaesan earthquake and the events occurring in the Gyeongsang provinces are compared with the previously proposed ground attenuation relationships in the Korean Peninsula to select most appropriate one. In the meantime, a few strong ground motion attenuation relationships are proposed and introduced in HAZUS, which have been designed for the Western United States and the Central and Eastern United States. The selected relationship from the ones for the Korean Peninsula has been compared with attenuation relationships available in HAZUS. Results of the study will increase the reliability of seismic hazard/risk assessments using HAZUS in the Korean Peninsula.

The selected relationship from the ones for the Korean Peninsula has been compared with attenuation relationships available in HAZUS. Then, the attenuation relation for the Western United States proposed by Sadigh et al.(1997) for the Site Class B has been selected for this study. It has been used for the earthquake loss estimation of the Gyeongju area located in southeast Korea using the deterministic method in HAZUS with a scenario earthquake (M=6.7). Application of the improved methodology for loss estimation in Korea will help decision makers for planning disaster responses and hazard mitigation.

Typical negative group delay circuits (NGDC) are analyzed in terms of signal attenuation, group delay, and bandwidth using S-parameters. By inverting these formulations, we derive and present the design equations (for NGD circuit elements) for a desired specification of the two among the three parameters. The proposed design method is validated through simulation examples for narrow- and wide-band pulse inputs in the time and frequency domains. Moreover, an NGDC composed of lumped elements is fabricated at 1 GHz for measurement. As a function of frequency, the circuit-/EM-simulated and measured group delays are in good agreement. The provided simple NGDC design equations may be useful for many applications that require compensations of some signal delays.

In order to estimate peak ground motions and frequency characteristics of strong ground motions in southern korea, we employed the stochastic simulation method with the moment magnitude(M$_{w}$) and the hypocentral distance(R). We estimated same input parameters that account for specific properties of source and propagation processes, and applied them to the stochastic simulation method. The stress drop($\Delta$$\sigma$) of 100-bar was estimated considering results of research in ENA, China, and southern korea. The attenuation parameter x was calculated by analyzing 57 seismograms recorded from September 1996 to October 1997 and the estimation result of the attenuation parameter x is 0.00112+0.000224 R where R is hypocenter distance. We estimated strong ground motion relations using the stochastic simulation method with suitable input parameters(e.g. $\Delta$$\sigma$, x, and so on). At last, we derived relations between hypocentral distances and ground motions(seismic attenuation equation) using results of the stochastic prediction.esults of the stochastic prediction.n.
The changeable stress environment directly affect the propagation law of a stress wave. Stress wave propagation tests in sandstone with different axial stresses were carried using a modified split Hopkinson Pressure bar (SHPB) assuming the sandstone has a uniform pore distribution. Then the waveform and stress wave energy dissipation were analyzed. The results show that the stress wave exhibits the double peak phenomenon. With increasing axial stress, the intensity difference decreases exponentially and experiences first a dramatic decrease and then gentle development. The demarcation stress is σ/σc=30%, indicating that the closer to the incident end, the faster the intensity difference attenuates. Under the same axial stress, the intensity difference decreases linearly with propagation distance and its attenuation intensity factor displays a quadratic function with axial stress. With increasing propagation distance, the time difference decays linearly and its delay coefficient reflects the damage degree. The stress wave energy attenuates exponentially with propagation distance, and the relations between attenuation rate, attenuation coefficient and axial stress can be represented by the quadratic function.

This paper introduces the status of and issues related to the PSHA (Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis) of Korean Nuclear Power Plant sites. PSHA was first introduced to the nuclear industry in the mid-1980s. The Korean PSHA is based on Cornell and accommodates the modem approach for eliciting expertise and statistical treatment. Due to the low seismicity in Korea, large uncertainties exist in the PSHA database including seismic source maps, seismicity parameters of seismic sources, and attenuation formulae. Though research in seismology, geology, and earthquake engineering since the mid-1990s has significantly reduced uncertainties, a considerable amount still exists. Considering the low seismicity of the Korean Peninsula, especially the lack of strong motion data, further reduction will take several decades.

The purpose of this study is to develop the non-destructive material evaluation method of aluminum alloy base metal matrix composite(MMC) by ultrasonics. Five aluminum base MMC specimens were fabricated in which the fractional ratios of fiber were changed from 0% to 31%. Relations among acoustic properties, microstructural features and elastic constant were compared. The ultrasonic velocity method was useful for nondestructive elastic constant measurement of composite materials, since the method had as same accuracy as conventional strain measurement method. Furthermore, velocity, attenuation and backscattering behaviors for each specimen also related to fractional ratio of fiber and these relations could utilize ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation of fiber structure in MMC.
The object of this study was to determine long-term temporal and spatial patterns of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), suspended solids, and chlorophyll (Chl) in Chungju Reservoir, based on the dataset of 1992 - 2013, and then to develop the empirical models of nutrient-Chl for predicting the eutrophication of the reservoir. Concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were largely affected by an intensity of Asian monsoon and the longitudinal structure of riverine (Rz), transition (Tz), and lacustrine zone (Lz). This system was nitrogen-rich system and phosphorus contents in the water were relatively low, implying a P-limiting system. Regression analysis for empirical model, however, showed that Chl had a weak linear relation with TP or TN, and this was mainly associated with turbid, and nutrient-rich inflows in the system. The weak relation was associated with non-algal light attenuation coefficients (Kna), which is inversely related water residence time. Thus, values of Chl had negative functional relation (R2 = 0.25, p < 0.001) with nonalgal light attenuation. Thus, the low chlorophyll at a given TP indicated a light-limiting for phytoplankton growth and total suspended solids (TSS) was highly correlated (R2 = 0.94, p < 0.001) with non-algal light attenuation. The relations of Trophic State Index (TSI) indicated that phosphorus limitation was weak [TSI (Chl) - TSI (TP) < 0; TSI (SD) - TSI (Chl) > 0] and the effects of zooplankton grazing were also minor [TSI (Chl) - TSI (TP) > 0; TSI (SD) - TSI (Chl) > 0].
Targeted introduction of explosion-resisting and energy-absorbing materials and optimization of explosion-resisting composite structural styles in underground engineering are the most important measures for modern engineering protection. They could also improve the survivability of underground engineering in wartime. In order to test explosion-resisting and energy-absorbing effects of high-performance equal-sized-aggregate (HPESA) concrete, the explosive loading tests were conducted on HPESA concrete composite plates by field simple explosion craters. Time-history curves of the explosion pressure at the interfaces were obtained under six conditions with different explosion ranges and different thicknesses of the HPESA concrete plate. Test results show that under the same explosion range, composite plate structures with different thicknesses of the HPESA concrete plate differ significantly in terms of the wave-absorbing ability. Under the three thicknesses in the tests, the wave-absorbing ability is enhanced with the growing thickness and the maximum pressure attenuation index reaches 83.4%. The energy attenuation coefficient of the HPESA concrete plate under different conditions was regressively fitted. The natural logarithm relations between the interlayer plate thickness and the energy attenuation coefficient under the two explosion ranges were attained.
