With the development of the Internet, various IT technologies such as IoT, Cloud, etc. have been developed, and various systems have been built in countries and companies. Because these systems generate and share vast amounts of data, they needed a variety of systems that could detect threats to protect the critical data contained in the system, which has been actively studied to date. Typical techniques include anomaly detection and misuse detection, and these techniques detect threats that are known or exhibit behavior different from normal. However, as IT technology advances, so do technologies that threaten systems, and these methods of detection. Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attacks national or companies systems to steal important information and perform attacks such as system down. These threats apply previously unknown malware and attack technologies. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a hybrid intrusion detection system that combines anomaly detection and misuse detection to detect unknown threats. Two detection techniques have been applied to enable the detection of known and unknown threats, and by applying machine learning, more accurate threat detection is possible. In misuse detection, we applied Classification based on Association Rule(CBA) to generate rules for known threats, and in anomaly detection, we used One-Class SVM(OCSVM) to detect unknown threats. Experiments show that unknown threat detection accuracy is about 94%, and we confirm that unknown threats can be detected.
Network-based sharing of information has evolved into a cloud service environment today, increasing its number of users rapidly, but has become a major target for network-based illegal attackers.. In addition, IP spoofing among attackers' various attack techniques generally involves resource exhaustion attacks. Therefore, fast detection and response techniques are required. The existing detection method for IP spoofing attack performs the final authentication process according to the analysis and matching of traceback information of the client who attempted the connection request. However, the simple comparison method of traceback information may require excessive OTP due to frequent false positives in an environment requiring service transparency. In this paper, symmetric key cryptography based on traceback information is used as mutual authentication information to improve this problem. That is, after generating a traceback-based encryption key, mutual authentication is possible by performing a normal decryption process. In addition, this process could improve the overhead caused by false positives.

Due to the recent surge in popularity of cryptocurrency, the threat of cryptojacking, a malicious code for mining cryptocurrencies, is increasing. In particular, web-based cryptojacking is easy to attack because the victim can mine cryptocurrencies using the victim's PC resources just by accessing the website and simply adding mining scripts. The cryptojacking attack causes poor performance and malfunction. It can also cause hardware failure due to overheating and aging caused by mining. Cryptojacking is difficult for victims to recognize the damage, so research is needed to efficiently detect and block cryptojacking. In this work, we take representative distinct symptoms of cryptojacking as an indicator and propose a new architecture. We utilized the K-Nearst Neighbors(KNN) model, which trained computer performance indicators as behavior-based dynamic analysis techniques. In addition, a K-means model, which trained the frequency of malicious script words for script similarity-based static analysis techniques, was utilized. The KNN model had 99.6% accuracy, and the K-means model had a silhouette coefficient of 0.61 for normal clusters.
In order not to make the malwares be easily analyzed, the hackers apply various anti-reversing and obfuscation techniques to the malwares. However, as the more anti-revering techniques are applied to the malwares the more abnormal characteristics in the PE file's header which are not shown in the normal PE file, could be observed. In this letter, a new malware detection technique is proposed based on this observation. For the malware detection, we define the Characteristics Vector(CV) which can represent the characteristics of a PE file's header. In the learning phase, we calculate the average CV(ACV) of malwares(ACVM) and normal files(ACVN). To detect the malwares we calculate the 2 Weighted Euclidean Distances(WEDs) from a file's CV to ACVs and they are used to decide whether the file is a malware or not. The proposed technique is very fast and detection rate is fairly high, so it could be applied to the network based attack detection and prevention devices. Moreover, this technique is could be used to detect the unknown malwares because it does not utilize a signature but the malware's characteristics.

As Internet of Things (IoT) applications and devices rapidly grow, cyber-attacks on IoT networks/systems also have an increasing trend, thus increasing the threat to security and privacy. Botnet is one of the threats that dominate the attacks as it can easily compromise devices attached to an IoT networks/systems. The compromised devices will behave like the normal ones, thus it is difficult to recognize them. Several intelligent approaches have been introduced to improve the detection accuracy of this type of cyber-attack, including deep learning and machine learning techniques. Moreover, dimensionality reduction methods are implemented during the preprocessing stage. This research work proposes deep Autoencoder dimensionality reduction method combined with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifier as botnet detection system for IoT networks/systems. Experiments were carried out using 3- layer, 4-layer and 5-layer pre-processing data from the MedBIoT dataset. Experimental results show that using a 5-layer Autoencoder has better results, with details of accuracy value of 99.72%, Precision of 99.82%, Sensitivity of 99.82%, Specificity of 99.31%, and F1-score value of 99.82%. On the other hand, the 5-layer Autoencoder model succeeded in reducing the dataset size from 152 MB to 12.6 MB (equivalent to a reduction of 91.2%). Besides that, experiments on the N_BaIoT dataset also have a very high level of accuracy, up to 99.99%.

The transition toward a contactless society has been rapidly progressing owing to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the IT environment of organizations and enterprises is changing rapidly; in particular, data security is expanding to the private sector. To adapt to these changes, organizations and companies have started to securely transfer confidential data to residential PCs and personally owned devices of employees working from home or from other locations. Therefore, organizations and companies are introducing streaming data services, such as the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) or cloud services, to securely connect internal and external networks. These methods have the advantage of providing data without the need to download to a third terminal; however, while the data are being streamed, attacks such as screen shooting or capturing are performed. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in prevention techniques against screen capture threats that may occur in a contactless environment. In this study, we analyze possible screen capture methods in a PC and a mobile phone environment and present techniques that can protect the screens against specific attack methods. The detection and defense for screen capture of PC applications on Windows OS and Mac OS could be solved with a single agent using our proposed techniques. Screen capture of mobile devices can be prevented by applying our proposed techniques on Android and iOS.

Cyber attacks are evolving commensurate with recent developments in information security technology. Intrusion detection systems collect various types of data from computers and networks to detect security threats and analyze the attack information. The large amount of data examined make the large number of computations and low detection rates problematic. Feature selection is expected to improve the classification performance and provide faster and more cost-effective results. Despite the various feature selection studies conducted for intrusion detection systems, it is difficult to automate feature selection because it is based on the knowledge of security experts. This paper proposes a feature selection technique to overcome the performance problems of intrusion detection systems. Focusing on feature selection, the first phase of the proposed system aims at constructing a feature subset using a sequential forward floating search (SFFS) to downsize the dimension of the variables. The second phase constructs a classification model with the selected feature subset using a random forest classifier (RFC) and evaluates the classification accuracy. Experiments were conducted with the NSL-KDD dataset using SFFS-RF, and the results indicated that feature selection techniques are a necessary preprocessing step to improve the overall system performance in systems that handle large datasets. They also verified that SFFS-RF could be used for data classification. In conclusion, SFFS-RF could be the key to improving the classification model performance in machine learning.

Buffer overflow vulnerability is the most representative one that an attack method and its countermeasure is frequently developed and changed. This vulnerability is still one of the most critical threat since it was firstly introduced in middle of 1990s. Shellcode is a machine code which can be used in buffer overflow attack. Attackers make the shellcode for their own purposes and insert it into target host's memory space, then manipulate EIP(Extended Instruction Pointer) to intercept control flow of the target host system. Therefore, a lot of research to defend have been studied, and attackers also have done many research to bypass security measures designed for the shellcode defense. In this paper, we investigate shellcode defense and attack techniques briefly and we propose our new methodology which can hide shellcode in the 24bit BMP image. With this proposed technique, we can easily hide any shellcode executable and we can bypass the current detection and prevention techniques.

The rapid growth of network based IT systems has resulted in continuous research of security issues. Probe intrusion detection is an area of increasing concerns in the internet community. Recently, a number of probe intrusion detection schemes have been proposed based on various technologies. However, the techniques, which have been applied in many systems, are useful only for the existing patterns of probe intrusion. They can not detect new patterns of probe intrusion. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new Probe Intrusion Detection technology that can find new patterns of probe intrusion. In this paper, we proposed a new network based probe intrusion detector(NePID) using anomaly traffic analysis and fuzzy cognitive maps that can detect intrusion by the denial of services attack detection method utilizing the packet analyses. The probe intrusion detection using fuzzy cognitive maps capture and analyze the packet information to detect syn flooding attack. Using the result of the analysis of decision module, which adopts the fuzzy cognitive maps, the decision module measures the degree of risk of denial of service attack and trains the response module to deal with attacks. For the performance evaluation, the "IDS Evaluation Data Set" created by MIT was used. From the simulation we obtained the max-average true positive rate of 97.094% and the max-average false negative rate of 2.936%. The true positive error rate of the NePID is similar to that of Bernhard's true positive error rate.

Email phishing has become very prevalent especially now that most of our dealings have become technical. The victim receives a message that looks as if it was sent from a known party and the attack is carried out through a fake cookie that includes a phishing program or through links connected to fake websites, in both cases the goal is to install malicious software on the user's device or direct him to a fake website. Today it is difficult to deploy robust cybersecurity solutions without relying heavily on machine learning algorithms. This research seeks to detect phishing emails using high-accuracy machine learning techniques. using the WEKA tool with data preprocessing we create a proposed methodology to detect emails phishing. outperformed random forest algorithm on Naïve Bayes algorithms by accuracy of 99.03 %.
