  • Fast neutrons with a broad energy spectrum, with which it is possible to evaluate nuclear data for various research fields such as medical applications and the development of fusion reactors, can be generated by irradiating proton beams on target materials such as beryllium. To generate short-pulse proton beam, we adopted a deflector and slit system. In a simple deflector with slit system, most of the proton beam is blocked by the slit, especially when the beam pulse width is short. Therefore, the available beam current is very low, which results in low neutron flux. In this study, we proposed beam modulation using a buncher cavity to increase the available beam current. The ideal field pattern for the buncher cavity is sawtooth. To make the field pattern similar to a sawtooth waveform, a multiharmonic buncher was adopted. The design process for the multiharmonic buncher includes a beam dynamics calculation and three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation. In addition to the system design for pulsed proton generation, a test bench with a microwave ion source is under preparation to test the performance of the system. The design study results concerning the pulsed proton beam generation and the test bench preparation with some preliminary test results are presented in this paper.

  • The design concept of a bending magnet to be installed in the KSTAR NBI system is presented. It is the function of a bending magnet that removes unconverted ions from the main beam stream and produces an 8 MW, 120 keV deuterium neutral beam. In order to determine the proper size and shape of the bending magnet, a parametric study on the B-field pattern was carried out by changing the dimensions of the pole face model. In addition, the detailed trajectories of the dominant ion species produced in the beam line were calculated. The electrical and cooling parameters of the coil assembly were also estimated.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) lims were deposited by using end hall type ion gun. Benzene gas was used for the generation of carbon ions. In order to systematically control the ion energy, we applied to the substrate DC, pulsed DC or 250 kHz medium frequency bias voltage, DLC films of superior mechanical properties of hardness 39$\pm$4 GPa and elastic mudulus 290$\pm$50GPa (2 to 6 times better than those of the films deposited by plasma assisted CVD method) could be obtained. Deposition rate was much higher than when using Kaufman type ion source, which results from higher ion beam current of end hall type ion gun. The mechanical properties and atomic bond structure were independent of the bias voltage type ion gun. The mechanical properties and atomic bond structure were independent of the bias voltage type but intimately related with the magnitude of the bias voltage. With increasing the negative bias voltage, the structure of the films changed to graphitic one resulting in decreased content of three dimensional inter-links. Degradation of the mechanical properties with increasing bias voltage could be thus understood in terms of the content odf three dimensional inter-links.

  • Background: In the calibration and testing laboratory of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, the old X-ray generator used for the production of reference X-ray fields was replaced with a new one. For this newly installed X-ray irradiation system, beam alignment as well as the verification of beam qualities was conducted. Materials and Methods: The existing X-ray generator, Phillips MG325, was replaced with YXLON Y.TU 320-D03 in order to generate reference X-ray fields. Theoretical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations were used to determine initial filter thickness. Beam alignment was performed in three steps to deliver a homogeneous radiation dosage to the target at different distances. Finally, the half-value layers were measured for different X-ray fields to verify beam qualities by using an ion chamber. Results and Discussion: Beam alignment was performed in three steps, and collimators and other components were arranged to maintain the uniformity of the mean air kerma rate within ${\pm}2.5%$ at the effective beam diameter of 28 cm. The beam quality was verified by using half-value layer measurement methods specified by American National Standard Institute (ANSI) N13.11-2009 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-4037. For each of the nine beams than can be generated by the new X-ray irradiation system, air kerma rates for X-ray fields of different beam qualifies were measured. The results showed that each air kerma rate and homogeneity coefficient of the first and second half-value layers were within ${\pm}5%$ of the recommended values in the standard documents. Conclusion: The results showed that the new X-ray irradiation system provides beam qualities that are as high as moderate beam qualities offered by National Institute of Standards and Technology in ANSI N13.11-2009 and those for narrow-spectrum series of ISO-4037.

  • Microstructure of the Fe-Ti system by ion beam mixing of multilayers at 300 K and 77 K has been studied in a wide composition range. The ion bombardment was carried out using $Ar^+$ ions at 80 keV. Using grazing angle x-ray diffraction we find that the lattice parameters of these bcc solid solutions are very close to that of $\alpha$-Fe. Extended x-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy have been performed to investgate the short-range order in the ion-beam-mixed state. The structure parameters, such as the interatomic distance and the coordination number are estmated from the Fe K-edge Fourier filtered EXAFS spectra. The interatomic distance is independent of the alloy concentration and it is almost constant. The study of x-ray absorption near-edge structure gives information on the individual $\rho$components of the partial densityof states of the conduction band of the Fe and Ti We also find that a charge transfer from Ti to Fe atoms takes place.

  • Enhanced ICRF (Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequency) ion heating of H-mode D(H) plasma will be tried in 2011 KSTAR experimental campaign. Minority heating is a main ion heating scheme in the ICRF. Its efficiency increases as the hydrogen minority ratio increases in deuterium plasmas. And it should be sustained at a lower level than the critical minority ratio. Consequently, it is important to elevate the critical ratio to maximize ion heating and it is possible by increasing the ion temperature or parallel wave number (k${\parallel}$) of the antenna. Increasing the k${\parallel}$ is not a good approach since the coupling efficiency decreases exponentially with regard to k${\parallel}$ as well. So the remaining method is to increase ion temperature by using NB (Neutral Beam). Ion heating fraction of NB increases as the electron temperature increases. Therefore, we will try to heat electron by using ECH together with NB ion heating before ICRF power injection. The ICRF heating efficiency will be compared with respect to several NB+ECH+ICRF heating combinations through several diagnostics such as XICS (Xray Imaging Crystal Spectroscopy), CES (Charge Exchange Spectroscopy) and neutron measurement. The theoretical background and the experimental results will be presented in more detail in the conference.

  • We found that polyimide surfaces bombarded by a low energy argon ion beam align liquid crystals. The pretilt angle of the liquid crystals is controlled by ion beam parameters, such as the energy of the incident ions, the angle of incidence, exposure time and current density. The alignment direction of liquid crystal on substrates corresponded to ion beam direction. By argon ion beam the pretilt angle of the liquid crystals was controlled between $0.5^{\circ}$ and $4^{\circ}$for SE-3140 under the proper conditons. By the atomic force microscope (AFM), polyimide surfaces before and after bombarded by ion beam are compared.

  • The purpose of this work is acquiring some parameters of therapeutic heavy ion beams after penetrating a thick target. The experiments were performed using a pencil-like $\^$12/C beam of about 3 mm in diameter from NIRS-HIMAC, and the data were taken at several points of the target thickness for $\^$12/C beam of 290 MeV/u and 400 MeV/u. By the simultaneous measurements using some detectors, the atomic number of each fragment particle was identified, and the beam profile, the dose distribution and the LET spectrum for each element were derived.

  • A new ion source has been designed, fabricated, and installed at the NBTS (Neutral Beam Test Stand) at the KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) site. The goalis to provide a 100 keV, 2MW deuterium neutral beam injection as an auxiliary heating of KSTAR (Korea Super Tokamak Advanced Research). To cope with power demand, an ion current of 50 A is required considering the beam power loss and neutralization efficiency. The new ion source consists of a magnetic cusp bucket plasma generator and a set of tetrode accelerators with circular copper apertures. The plasma generator for the new ion source has the same design concept as the modified JAEA multi-cusp plasma generator for the KSTAR prototype ion source. The dimensions of the plasma generator are a cross section of $59{\times}25cm^2$ with a 32.5 cm depth. The anode has azimuthal arrays of Nd-Fe permanent magnets (3.4 kG at surface) in the bucket and an electron dump, which makes 9 cusp lines including the electron dump. The discharge properties were investigated preliminarily to enhance the efficiency of the beam extraction. The discharge of the new ion source was mainly controlled by a constant power mode of operation. The discharge of the plasma generator was initiated by the support of primary electrons emitted from the cathode, consisting of 12 tungsten filaments with a hair-pin type (diameter = 2.0 mm). The arc discharge of the new ion source was achieved easily up to an arc power of 80 kW (80 V/1000 A) with hydrogen gas. The 80 kW capacity seems sufficient for the arc power supply to attain the goal of arc efficiency (beam extracted current/discharge input power = 0.8 A/kW). The accelerator of the new ion source consists of four grids: plasma grid (G1), gradient grid (G2), suppressor grid (G3), and ground grid (G4). Each grid has 280 EA circular apertures. The performance tests of the new ion source accelerator were also finished including accelerator conditioning. A hydrogen ion beam was successfully extracted up to 100 keV /60 A. The optimum perveance is defined where the beam divergence is at a minimum was also investigated experimentally. The optimum hydrogen beam perveance is over $2.3{\mu}P$ at 60 keV, and the beam divergence angle is below $1.0^{\circ}$. Thus, the new ion source is expected to be capable of extracting more than a 5 MW deuterium ion beam power at 100 keV. This ion source can deliver ~2 MW of neutral beam power to KSTAR tokamak plasma for the 2012 campaign.
