A new, simple and fast flow injection analysis (FIA) method has been developed for the indirect determination of nitrite. The proposed indirect automatic method is based on the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate using a lead(IV) dioxide oxidant microcolumn where the flow of the sample through the microcolumn reduces the $PbO_2$ solid phase reagent to Pb(II), which is measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The absorbance of Pb(II) are proportional to the concentration of nitrite in the samples. The calibration curve was linear up to 30 mg $L ^{-1}$, with a detection limit of 0.11 mg $L ^{-1}$ for a 400 mL injected sample volume and a sampling rate of about 80 $h ^{-1}$. The results exhibit no interference from the presence of large amounts of ions. The developed procedure was found to be suitable for the determination of nitrite in foodstuffs and wastewaters. A relative standard deviation better than 0.9% was obtained in a repeatability study. The reliability of the method was established by parallel determination against the standard method.
Ten trace elements (Mg, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mo, and Cd) were determined in seven traditionally used wild medicinal plants of the Nagas in the North-East India viz Cynoglossum furcatum Wallich, Elsholtzia blanda Bentham, Lycopodium cernuum Linnaeus, Potentilla fulgens Wallich ex Hooker, Swertia macrosperma C.B. Clarke, Thalictrum foliolosum DC and Valeriana jatamansi Jones. Plant samples were dried, weighed, digested and analyzed for their mineral distribution level ranging from trace to major elements by graphite furnace-atomic absorption spectroscopy. All the medicinal herbs studied were found to contain the ten elements analyzed. The elemental concentration is given in mg/kg. Mg and Ca are present in high concentrations in both the roots and leaves of the plant samples. Among trace transition metals Fe had the highest concentration, followed by Mn, Cr, Cu, V, Zn, and Mo. Analysis showed that the toxic Cd element was at a lower concentration and is within the permissible limit of FAO/WHO, California standards and United States Pharmacopeia Limit for Nutritional Supplements.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of absorption coefficient models on the P1 radiation model for a premixed hydrogen flame containing the water vapor. A CFD combustion simulation analysis was performed using XiFoam, one of the open-source CFD solvers in OpenFOAM. The solver using the flamelet combustion model has been modified to implement radiative heat transfer. The absorption coefficient models used in this study the grey-mean model and constant model, and for comparison, case without radiation was added. This CFD simulation study consisted of benchmarking the THAI HD-15 and HD-22 experiments. The difference between the two tests is the inclusion of water vapor in the condition before ignition. In the case of the HD-22 experiment containing water vapor in the initial condition, the simulation results show that the grey-mean absorption coefficient model has a strong influence on the temperature decrease of the flame and on the change in pressure inside the vessel.
The accuracy of analytical results in response to the use of different additives ($NH_4Cl$, KCl, $LaCl_3$) and oxidant gases was evaluated and compared by using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Identification of spectroscopic interferences and possible improvements in Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) analysis were also discussed. The average accuracies of total chromium using Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) were found to be 72.1~94.2% in air/acetylene flame condition by AAS, and they were improved to 100.5~110.5% when the oxidants was changed to nitrous oxide rather than adding the additives. The field samples showed similar trends to CRMs, but chromium concentrations were highly variable depending on analytical conditions. The average accuracies using CRMs were estimated to be 89.3~166.1% by ICP-AES, and improved to below 121.7% after eliminating iron interference. Field samples with low chromium and high iron concentration were measured to be > 30% lower in total chromium concentrations by ICP-AES than AAS in nitrous oxide/acetylene flame. Total chromium concentrations in soil could be analyzed with better accuracy under nitrous oxide/acetylene flame by AAS because it was more effective to increase the temperature of the flame than to eliminate the chemical interference for maximizing atomization of chromium. When using ICP-AES, interference substances, total chromium levels, and analytical conditions should be also considered.
A matrix modification was studied for the determination of trace bismuth in water samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The type and quantity of modifiers as well as the use of auxiliary modifiers were investigated to realize the efficient modification. Palladium was chosen as a single modifier. By the addition of palladium($5{\mu}g/mL$) to 100 ng/mL bismuth solution, the temperatures could be raised from $500^{\circ}C$ to $1,300^{\circ}C$ for the charring and from $2,000^{\circ}C$ to $2,200^{\circ}C$ for the atomization as well as the sensitivity and reproducibility were improved. The absorbance of bismuth was maximum and not changed in the range of Pd $3-25{\mu}g/mL$. And several materials were examined as an auxiliary modifier. The mixed solution of $1{\mu}g/mL$ palladium and $200{\mu}g/mL$ nickel have raised the temperatures as with $5{\mu}g/mL$ palladium only. The maximum absorbance of bismuth was shown in the nickel concentration range of $100-300{\mu}g/mL$ in $1{\mu}g/mL$ palladium modified system. With such optimum conditions, the trace amount of bismuth in several water samples could be determined by a calibration curve method, and good recoveries were also obtained.
Airborne particulate matter $(PM_{10})$ collected using high volume air sampler and silica fiber filter were analyzed by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis(INAA), Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry(ICP-AES) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry(AAS), and the results were compared with each other. 30~40 trace elements in environmental standard reference materials(NIST SRM 1648 and NIES CRM No.8) were analyzed for the analytical quality control. The relative error for two-third of elements detected was less than 10%, and the standard deviation was less than 15%. During the sampling period for 24 hours, the mass concentration of total suspended particulate was 36.1$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ and the value is lower than the critical level in Korea. In the results of NAA, the elements of Al, As, Ba, Fe, La, Mg, Na, Sb, Zn were well agreed with those of other methods. In statistical estimation between different methods, the deviation of Al, Ba, Cr, Fe was less than 10% and quite reliable.
Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been applied to determine the changes in bulk oxidation state of uranium oxides in molten salt. From an analysis of XANES data, one can determine the cahnges in bulk oxidation-state of U compounds in salts(LiCl/KCl). XAFS spectroscpy is a powerful tool for probing the changes in valence state and structure of uranium compounds in colten salt as well as in noncrystalline form and doped in other matrices.
