  • This study investigates the application of effervescent nozzles to liquid rockets using a laboratory-scale twin fluids spray test system. Typically, rocket engines using a single liquid propellant control thrust by adjusting the mass flow rate, which is influenced by the spray differential pressure between the fluid pressure at the injector front and atmospheric pressure. As the differential pressure decreases, uneven atomization and combustion instability can occur. To address this issue, this research explores an effervescent nozzle that mixes gaseous and liquid propellants to maintain injection pressure. Experiments were conducted on eight different nozzle types with varying orifice and aerator sizes. The experimental results demonstrated internal pressure variations and differences in spray characteristics based on nozzle design, which were analyzed and discussed. if these injection characteristics are applied in the future, it is expected that they could also be utilized in eco-friendly alternative fuels such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Dimethyl Ether(DME)의 증발과 거시적 분무 특성 (Macroscopic Characteristics of Evaporating Dimethyl Ether(DME) Spray)

  • Dimethyl Ether(DME) has been considered as one of the most attractive alternative fuels for compression ignition engine. Its main advantage in diesel engine application is high efficiency of diesel cycle with soot free combustion though conventional fuel injection system has to be modified due to the physical properties of DME. Experimental study of DME and conventional diesel spray employing a common-rail type fuel injection system with a 5-hole sac type injector was performed in a constant volume vessel pressurized by nitrogen gas. Spray cone angles and penetrations of the DME spray were characterized and compared with those of diesel. For evaluation of the evaporating characteristics of the DME, shadowgraphy technique employing an Ar-ion laser and an ICCD camera was adopted. Tip of the DME spray was formed in mushroom-like shape at atmospheric chamber pressure, which disappeared in higher chamber pressure. Spray tip penetration and spray cone angle of the DME became similar to those of diesel under 3MPa of chamber pressure. Higher injection pressure provided wider vapor phase area while it decreased with higher chamber pressure condition.

  • 리세스 길이가 다른 4개의 와류동축형 분사기를 적층제조 방식으로 제작하였다. 상압 환경에서 물과 공기를 모사추진제로 하여 단일분사 및 혼합분사 수류실험을 수행하였다. 리세스 길이와 추진제 유량 조건에 따른 분사차압과 유량계수를 확인하였고, 이미지 분석을 통해 분열길이와 분무각을 측정하였다. 혼합분사 분사차압 및 유량계수 결과에서 액체 분사기는 리세스에 영향을 받지 않았다. 하지만 기체 분사기는 리세스 길이 증가에 따라 분사차압이 증가하고 유량계수가 감소하였다. 단일분사 시 분열길이는 리세스 증가에 따라 길어졌지만, 혼합분사에서는 반대로 감소하였다.

Study on Effects of Pressure Ratio on the Wall-impingement Spray Characteristics of Nitrogen Gas using CNG Injector

  • In this study, an experimental investigation on the effects of the pressure ratio on the wall-impingement spray characteristics of nitrogen gas using a compressed natural gas (CNG) injector was conducted. The transient development of the impingement spray was recorded by a high speed camera with Z-type Schlieren visualization method. The spray behavior under various pressure ratio conditions were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the pressure ratio has positive effect on the development of spray wall-impingement. The effects of the above factor were evaluated in a constant volume chamber at atmospheric conditions. The data from test showed that, with the increase of the pressure ratio, the spray tip penetration (STP) quickly increases before the impingement and gradually increases after the impingement. Additionally, the spray velocity first increases and then sharply decreases on regardless of the injection pressure level. As the spray spreading angle increases, spray area and volume increases rapidly with the increase in STP at the beginning of injection, and finally entered a stable range, has a great correlation with the increase of pressure ratios.

Surface Treatment of a Titanium Implant using a low Temperature Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet

  • The surface treatment of a titanium implant is investigated with a non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet. The plasma jet is generated by the injection of He and $O_2$ gas mixture with a sinusoidal driving voltage of 3 kV or more and with a driving frequency of 20 kHz. The generated plasma plume has a length up to 35 mm from the jet outlet. The wettability of 4 different titanium surfaces with plasma treatments was measured by the contact angle analysis. The water contact angles were significantly reduced especially for $O_2/He$ mixture plasma, which was explained with the optical emission spectroscopy. Consequently, plasma treatment enhances wettability of the titanium surface significantly within the operation time of tens of seconds, which is practically helpful for tooth implantation.

직접 분사식 연료 분무에서의 기.액상 분리 계측에 관한 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Analysis of Liquid/Vapor Phase in GDI Spray)

  • For this research an extension of the LIF technique that the LIEF(Laser Induced Exciplex Fluorescence) technique has been used LIEF technique is the unique method to allows the visualization of fuel vapor phase and liquid phase individually by capturing each signals of them. In this work performed that the basic procedure for advanced LIEF technique using TEA and benzene as dopants md high power KrF excimer laser to excite the dopants. Iso-octane is used as the fuel because it does not absorb light at the laser wavelength. The boiling point of benzene and TEA are $81^{\circ}C\;and89^{\circ}C$, respectively, in comparison to $99^{\circ}C$ for iso-octane. It is observed that the behavior and distribution of high pressed fuel injection from various test condition. The injection pressure is set as 3MPa. and 5MPa. And the ambient pressure of test chamber is atmospheric pressure and 1MPa, the ambient temperature of chamber is room temperature, $300^{\circ}C\;and\;500^{\circ}C$ to imitate the condition of GDI engine cylinder.

LPG 지하저장기지 수평 수벽공의 클로깅 현상 발생시 지하수위 및 주입수량, 삼출수량의 변화양상에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Groundwater Head, Injection Water Flowrate and Seepage Water Flowrate under Clogging State of Underground Storage)

  • LPG 지하저장기지에서 클로깅 현상이 발생할 경우 저장공동 주위의 지하수위가 설계된 수치보다 낮아져 저장물이 누출되므로 이에 대한 감지가 필수적이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 클로깅 현상이 실제로 발생하였을 경우 저장기지에서 관측할 수 있는 관측인자인 공동주변 지하수위, 수벽공 주입수량, 공동 삼출수량들의 변화양상을 고찰하기 위하여 지하저장기지를 모사한 모형실험장비를 제작하여 각 인자들의 변화 측정실험을 수행하였다. 클로깅 발생시 관측인자의 변화양상은 다음과 같다. 지하수위는 공동의 압력이 커짐에 따라 증가하고 클로깅이 심할수록 감소하는데, 클로깅 발생을 지하수위 변화에 의해서 보다 잘 감지하려면 공동의 압력을 가능한 낮게 하고, 공동 운영 초기의 지하수위와 현재 운영 상태의 지하수위를 비교해 보는 것이 바람직하다. 클로깅에 의한 지하수위의 감소는 수벽공의 압력이 커질수록 다소 둔화된다 현탁물질에 의한 클로깅이 심할수록 주입수량과 삼출수량은 선형적으로 감소하는데 주입수량의 감소율이 삼출수량의 감소율보다 크게 나타난다.

Spray Characteristics of the Rocket Oxidizer-rich Preburner Injection System

  • This paper presents the spray characteristics of the oxidizer rich preburner injector which can be used in the high-thrust rocket system. We designed the basic shape of the liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injector for the rocket oxidizer rich preburner injection system. To understand the spray angle variation with the high pressure environment, the spray visualization in the high pressure chamber was preformed. Also we measured the droplet velocity, the Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD), the volume flux and the number density with the PDPA system by using water in atmospheric pressure. The results show that the spray angle is reduced by increasing ambient pressure and maximum droplet velocity is shown from a nozzle tip and then the droplet velocity decreases as a spray moves to the downstream. The SMD decreases on the axial distance from 20 mm to 50 mm but it increases over 50 mm. That is due to the increasing number of collision with each droplet and interaction with ambient air on going downstream direction.

에탄올/가솔린 혼합연료의 물리적 특성에 따른 분무 특성 비교 (Comparison of Spray Characteristics according to Physical Properties of Ethanol/Gasoline Blended Fuel)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of physical properties of fuels on spray characteristics in the gasoline direct injection system. Injection rate, spray visualization, and spray pattern experiments were performed to analyze the spray characteristics of ethanol, gasoline, and ethanol/gasoline blends. We measured injection rate of each fuel via the Bosch method. The spray visualization experiment was also carried out at atmospheric pressure using a high-speed camera. Finally, the average of drop surface area per unit volume was measured using the optical patternator. The experimental results from Bosch method showed that peak injection rate increased when the volume fraction of ethanol increased. In addition, higher viscosity of ethanol than that of gasoline leads to longer injection delay. At the initial injection region before reaching 0.8 ms, the spray tip penetration becomes longer as increasing the volume fraction of ethanol, but reversely shorter after 0.8 ms. It was found that ethanol makes spray angle become larger. The surface area per unit volume of the drop was decreased as the distance from the injection tip or the concentration of the gasoline increased.

다양한 연료온도 조건에 있어서의 기존 가솔린과 F-T합성 가솔린의 분사율 특성 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Injection Rate Characteristics of Conventional and F-T Synthetic Gasoline Under Various Fuel Temperatures)

  • Amidst the drive towards carbon neutrality, interest in renewable synthetic e-fuels is rising rapidly. These fuels, generated through the synthesis of atmospheric carbon and green hydrogen, offer a sustainable solution, showing advantages like high energy density and compatibility with existing infrastructure. The physical properties of e-fuels can be different from those of conventional gasoline based on manufacturing methods, which requires investigations into how the physical properties of e-fuels affect the fuel injection characteristics. This study performs a comparative analysis between conventional and Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthetic gasoline (e-gasoline) across various fuel temperatures, including the cold start condition. The fuel properties of F-T synthetic and conventional gasoline are analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique and the injection rates are measured using a Bosch-tube injection rate meter. The F-T synthetic gasoline exhibited higher density and kinematic viscosity, but lower vapor pressure compared to the conventional gasoline. Both fuels showed an increase in injection rate as the fuel temperature decreased. The F-T synthetic gasoline showed higher injection rates compared to conventional gasoline regardless of the fuel temperature.
