  • Representative impacts and effectiveness of surface meteorological observation data assimilation were examined in order to use wind resources estimation around southern coastal area of the Korean Peninsula. The data used in study are observational wind and temperature data at 5 and 41 sites of Regional Meteorological Offices and Automatical Weather Systems, respectively. Observation wind speed data tends to show small effective radius with limited area. Especially assimilation impacts of data observed at peninsula type sites like Yeosu play only around the inside of the peninsula. This limited effective radius for wind speed is caused by the strong correlation between topography and wind speed. And the efficient radius for surface air temperature is larger than that of wind. Data assimilation for observational air temperature is useful to increase the accuracy of wind energy estimation. However assimilation of wind data requires special care in its application due to high sensitivity of topographical complexity.

  • Recently air quality modeling studies for industrial complex and large cities located in the coastal regions have been carried out Especially, the representation of atmospheric flow fields within a model domain is very important, because an adequate air quality simulation requires an accurate portrayal of the realistic threedimensional wind fields. Therefore this study investigated effect of using high resolution terrain height data and FDDA with observational data to reflect local characteristics in numerical simulation. So the experiments were designed according to FDDA and the detail terrain height with 3sec resolution or not Case 30s was the experiment using the terrain height data of USGS without FDDA and Case 3s was the experiment using the detail terrain height data of Ministry of Environment without FDDA and Case 3sF was experiment using the detail terrain height data of Ministry of Environment with FDDA. The results of experiments were more remarkable, In Case 3s and Case 3sF, temperature indicated similar tendency comparing to observational data predicting maximum temperature during the daytime and wind speed made weakly for difference of terrain height Also Case 3sF had more adequate tendency than Case 3s at dawn.

  • Localized atmospheric conditions between multi-reference stations can bring the tropospheric delay irregularity that becomes an error terms affecting positioning accuracy in network RTK environment. Imbalanced network error can affect the network solutions and it can corrupt the entire network solution and degrade the correction accuracy. If an anomaly could be detected before the correction message was generated, it is possible to eliminate the anomalous satellite that can cause degradation of the network solution during the tropospheric delay anomaly. An atmospheric grid that consists of four meteorological stations was used to detect an inhomogeneous weather conditions and tropospheric anomaly applied AWSs (automatic weather stations) meteorological data. The threshold of anomaly detection algorithm was determined based on the statistical weather data of AWSs for 5 years in an atmospheric grid. From the analytic results of anomaly detection algorithm it showed that the proposed algorithm can detect an anomalous satellite with an anomaly flag generation caused tropospheric delay anomaly during localized atmospheric conditions between stations. It was shown that the different precipitation condition between stations is the main factor affecting tropospheric anomalies.

  • This study aims to implement the modeling of selected substances for the evaluation of Atmospheric Environmental Capacity by means of the data of 2006 atmospheric pollution substance emissions. As a result, it turned out that the substance with the concentration higher than Atmospheric Environmental standard concentration was NO2, and 17.6% of the total regions researched turned out to exceed the standard concentration. In addition, set was the targeted amount to be reduced in the areas where the upper limit of emission per unit lattice was exceeded, and the model was adopted accordingly. As a result, it turned out that about 80% of the actual emission should be reduced to meet the 2006 Atmospheric Environmental standard over the Daegu. In reality, it is impossible to reduce 80% of the actual emission. Thus, the same ratio of reduction was applied in all of the Daegu regions, and the modeling was applied. The results are as follows: When 30% was reduced, the level went down to 50 ppb, which is as high as 2006 Atmospheric Environmental standard; when 50% was reduced, the level went down to 30 ppb, which is as high as 2007 Atmospheric Environmental standard.

  • The atmospheric pollution distribution in the industrial area of Yosu in Korea is calculated using numerical model and the model is validated by comparing the calculations with observed data. The emission of NO$_{x}$ and SO$_{x}$ was estimated for 6 sources, and the emission amount of HC was estimated for 9 anthropogenic sources. The calculated wind speed, wind direction and temperature agreed well with the observed data at two observatories, and the calculated concentration of NO, NO$_2$, $O_3$ and SO$_2$ were also reasonable for 5 monitoring stations. The validity of the model is evaluated using 3 indexes of the EPA, and the model is found to be valid and accurate.ate.

  • This study aims to enhance the accuracy of fine dust predictions by analyzing various factors within the local environment, in addition to atmospheric conditions. In the atmospheric environment, meteorological and air pollution data were utilized, and additional factors contributing to fine dust generation within the region, such as traffic volume and electricity transaction data, were sequentially incorporated for analysis. XGBoost, Random Forest, and ANN (Artificial Neural Network) were employed for the analysis. As variables were added, all algorithms demonstrated improved performance. Particularly noteworthy was the Artificial Neural Network, which, when using atmospheric conditions as a variable, resulted in an MAE of 6.25. Upon the addition of traffic volume, the MAE decreased to 5.49, and further inclusion of power transaction data led to a notable improvement, resulting in an MAE of 4.61. This research provides valuable insights for proactive measures against air pollution by predicting future fine dust levels.

  • Research papers in the field of atmospheric environment published in three Journals: Journal of Korean Meteorological Society, Atmosphere, and Asia-Pacific Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, are all summarized over period of 60 years since the establishment of Korea Meteorological Society (KMS) in 1963. In addition, current research trends and future outlook in the atmospheric environment field has been also highlighted. The results of historical records published in three KMS journals indicated that the activities, contents, and scope of researches carried out by KMS members in the field of atmospheric environment have yielded the enormous and rapid progress in each of the all four areas over 60 years. In particular, as the chronological progress of observational instruments and availability of satellite data such as from GEMS can be a great asset to deepen the observational and modeling researches in the current and future studies, it is highly anticipated that the more progressive and in-depth studies can be achievable to abate the air pollutants over the Korea as well as northeast Asia.

  • The current status of atmospheric environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been summerized and future prospective for effective and accurate atmospheric EIA has been proposed by reviewing available papers and reports for the atmospheric EIA. The number of reports for the EIA in the EIA support system which is operated by the Korean Environmental Institute have been dramatically decreased from 282 reports in 2008 to 113 reports in 2012 during recent five years. This is partially due to simplification of the EIA procedure, the contraction of the public development and economic recession. We analyzed details of the EIA report to review how actual atmospheric EIA has preformed according to the EIA guidelines from the Korean Ministry of Environment. The 264 reports of EIA published in 2011 and 2012 had been reviewed especially focusing on the atmospheric evaluation items such as meteorology, air quality measurement and modeling, odor measurement and modeling, wind corridor in urban planning, and climate change. In overall sense, the atmospheric EIA has been performed quite well by abiding the guidelines except for local meteorological data measurement, permit standard for air quality and wind corridor. The new approaches to improve the procedure of atmospheric EIA and to reflect future of national air quality standard of $PM_{2.5}$ have been proposed. The guidelines on how to evaluate the wind corridor, to implement atmospheric EIA for $PM_{2.5}$ permit, and how to acquire local meteorological data by combining local measurement and model prediction are required for the effective and future oriented atmospheric EIA.

  • In this study, a numerical model developed for sunshine duration based on GIS data was used. This model considers blocking caused by topography and buildings and it is properly applicable to evaluation of sunshine duration environment in urban areas. The model reasonably well predicted the solar altitude and azimuth angels, compared to those provided by Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The developed model was applied to evaluation of sunshine duration environment around the Seonleung Park located near a building-congested area in Seoul. The model well reproduced shadow caused by buildings and/or topography in the numerical domain at 09:00 on August 1, 2015. In addition, the model was applied to finding a suitable measurement sites for pyrheliometer around the Seonleung Park. The model was also usefully applied to finding a suitable site for pyrheliometer in an urban area.

  • Satellites have been valuable tool for global/regional scale atmospheric environment monitoring as well as emission source detection. In this study, we present the results of application of satellite remote sensing data for air quality forecast in Seoul metropolitan area. AOT (Aerosol Optical Thickness) data from TERRA/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectre-radiometer) satellite were compared to ground based $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations, and used to estimate the possibility of the aerosol forecasting in Seoul metropolitan area. Although correlation coefficient (${\sim}0.37$) between MODIS AOT products and surface $PM_{10}$ concentration data was relatively low, there was good correlation between MODIS AOT and surface PM concentration under certain atmospheric conditions, which supports the feasibility of using the high-resolution MODIS AOT for air quality forecasting. The MODIS AOT data with trajectory forecasts also can provide information on aerosol concentration trend. The success rate of the 24 hour aerosol concentration trend forecast result was about 75% in this study. Finally, application of satellite remote sensing data with ground-based air quality observations could provide promising results for air quality monitoring and more exact trend forecast methodology by high resolution satellite data and verification with long term measurement dataset.
