The Selection of Sample Injection Modes and Its Effect on the Calibration Bias in S Gas Detection by Gas Chromatography (GC의 주입방식 차에 따른 고농도 악취황 성분의 검량오차 연구 : 주입부피의 고정방식 대비 주입농도의 고정방식 간 비교연구)

  • In this work, analytical bias arising from the gas chromatographic determination of sulfur compounds was evaluated by the application of direct loop injection method to the GC/PFPD detection of four sulfur compounds including H$_{2}$S, CH$_{3}$SH, DMS, and DMDS. For the proper evaluation of analytical uncertainties involved in GC calibration, we employed two comparative techniques of calibration at fxed concentration injection (CFCI) vs calibration at fixed volume injection (CFVI) method. The results of our study indicate that CFCI method exhibits very poor sensitivity due to the matrix effect with varying injection volumes. On the other hand, as CFVI method overcomes such limitation, it can be used to obtain very accurate quantification of S compounds at their high concentration levels above a few to a few tens ppb.

Removing Volatile Organic Compound using the Waste Industrial Catalyst - The effect of pretreatment on Pt-based catalyst (폐 산업용 촉매를 이용한 휘발성유기화합물의 제거 -Pt 계 촉매의 전처리 효과-)

  • The catalytic combustion of benzene, toluene and xylene over Pt-based catalyst was investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor system with atmospheric pressure to recycle the waste industrial catalyst for the processes of removing volatile organic compounds. According to the pretreatment condition, the properties of the waste Pt-based catalyst were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Toller). In the carte of air pretreatment, 20$0^{\circ}C$ was found to be optimal, and increasing pretreatment temperature resulted in the reduction of the catalytic activity. When Pt-based catalyst pretreated at 20$0^{\circ}C$ by alto was retreated by hydrogen, the catalytic activity increased by increasing treatment temperature. In the case of HNO$_3$aqueous solution pretreatment, the catalytic activity decreased by increasing the concentration of HNO$_3$aqueous solution. The catalytic activity was seen to observe the following sequence : benzene > toluene > xylene.

  • In order to assess the level of atmospheric pollution and to contribute the health improve ment of residents in Pusan, the authors measured the $CO, SO_2, NO_2, TSP, Noise, Pb, Cd, Cr and V$ level at 3 place by time from Jan. 1988 to Feb. 1988. THe places were Kukje, Daehyeon, Pujeon underground commercial floor. The results were as follows; 1. The range of concentration of air pollutants (1) CO : 0.5 - 3.0 ppm (2) $SO_2$ : 0.012 - 0.360 ppm (3) $NO_2$ : 0.018 - 0.089 ppm (4) TSP : 30 - 330 $\mug/m^3$ (5) Pb : 0.219 - 3.116 $\mug/m^3$ (6) Cd : 0.000 - 0.070 $\mug/m^3$ (7) Cr : 0.378 - 4.098 $\mug/m^3$ (8) V : 0.000 - 1.010 $\mug/m^3$ (9) Noise : 47 - 77 dB(A) 2. The level of all air pollutants were higher in the afternoon or night than in the morning. 3. The mean concentration of $SO_2$ in all places exceede the ambient air quality standard of $SO_2$,.

Contribution of Primary and Secondary Sources to the Atmospheric Concentrations of Carbonayl Compounds in Seoul (서울지역에서 대기 중 카르보닐 화합물 농도에 대한 1,2차 발생원의 기여율 산정)

  • Carbonyl compounds have been measured in downtown Seoul for September 1998 using 2-series impinger method. Average concentration (ppbv) of carbonyl compounds were 12.66$\pm$5.77 HCHO, 12.05$\pm$4.86 CH3CHO and 7.92$\pm$2.63 CH3CHCH3 These compounds were the most abundant carbonyl,. They showed maximum concentration during the daytime when photochemical activity was very strong minimum concentration were usually showed during the night and early morning. Comparison of diurnal variation of carbonyl compounds with the concentration of O3, NMHC, CO and meteorological data indicated that primary and secondary sources contributed the observed carbonyl compounds. Photochemical Formation Rate(PFR) of carbonyl compounds dur-ing the sampling periods were 61% HCHO, 85% CH3CHO, 85% CH3CHO, 71% CH3COCH3.

Formation and Growth of Atmospheric Aerosols by Water Vapor Reactions in an Indoor Smog Chamber (스모그 챔버에서 수분 반응에 의한 대기 에어로졸의 생성 및 성장)

  • Aerosol formation and growth by water vapor reactions were investigated in a 2.5 -㎥ indoor smog chamber filled with the unfiltered ambient air. The relative humidity of test ambient air was elevated at 59~64% or 84~88% by adding water vapor. The aerosol number size distribution and the concentrations of $O_3$, NO, NO$_2$, and SO$_2$ were measured during the experiments. The $O_3$ and NO$_2$ gases were well reacted with the water vapor at high relative humidity of 84~88%, and the reaction rates of these gases seemed to be decreased at low relative humidity of 59~64%. The formation and condensational growth phenomena of ambient aerosols by water vapor reactions were observed in a Teflon bag, depending strongly on the initial particle size distribution. The water vapor reactions might be affected by the contents of oxidants produced by photochemical reactions under sunlight.

  • The application of local air circulation models in the field of air pollution research has become more and more popular with increasing demands of detailed wind data for obtaining precise information on spatial and temporal variations. However the prediction of air circulation near the surface is generally not a simple task because of intricate interactions between surface and air. Particularly in Korea, many areas are mountainous with a complicated shoreline. Because considerable errors could be introduced into the model predictions, it is necessary to confirm their feasibility by comparing model predictions with observations. In this paper, the results from the evaluation of model predictions in selected publications in Korea as well as their procedures were reviewed. Various aspects of errors in the model predictions. such as possible sources, vulnerable conditions, and reduction methods, were discussed.

Characterization of Atmospheric Aerosols Scavenged by Rain Water (강수에 의한 대기 에어로졸 입자의 세정특성)

  • In order to study the scavenging mechanism as a final goal, the characteristics of chemical components in the rain water were examined as a function of the amount of rainfall. The rain drops were collected sequentially with a rainfall interval amount of each 0.1 .sim. 0.5 mm from the beginning of rain. Rain water was separated into the soluble and insoluble components and the concentrations of 15 elements in both components were determined by the PIXE analysis. The elemental cencentrations decreased quickly till about 0.3 .sim. 0.5 mm of rainfall was obtained and then decreased gradually afterward. Fe, Ti, and Si in the aerosol particles caught in rain water were in high insoluble state. In contrast, almost whole of S and Cl were dissolved in rain water.

Concentration and Seasonal Variation of Particle PCBs in Air

  • Atmospheric concentrations of PCBs were monitored in Ansung-city, Kyonggi province during the 2001/2002 to characterize the concentration distribution and seasonal variation of particle polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Average concentration of particle bound PCB showed maximum value for penta-CBs and minimum value for octa-CBs. Seasonal contributions $(%\)$ of total particle PCBs showed the highest value in winter months and lowest value in summer month, This result indicated that concentration of total particle PCBs increased with decreasing temperature in the atmosphere. Therefore, particle PCBs were easily formed by the condensation of gas phase PCBs in winter months. The total particle PCBs exhibited an inverse correlation with temperature (p<0.01) which suggested that particle PCBs were easily formed by condensation of gaseous PCBs in winter months.

Atmospheric Concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOC) of Day/Night Periods During the Summer Season in Kwangju (광주지역 여름철 대기 중 주야간 VOC 농도 특성)

  • The concentrations of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOC) were investigated from the Kwangju area. A total number of sixty six sample were collected and analyzed during day/night periods from June to September 1999. Each of the canister sample ws analyzed for alkane and aromatic compounds using a GC/MSD sys-tem. The concentration of VOC in mean day/night time, when compared, was in the order: toluene(16%)> isobu-tane(14%)= acethylene(14%)> propane(12%)> ethane(11%)> butane(9%). The VOC concentrations were gene-rally higher during the daytime than the nighttime. The VOC with light weight(such as an alkane group, $C_2$-C(suh)5) showed generally higher concentrations during day/nighttime than the VOC with heavy weight (such as an aromatic group). High correlations were among the VOC emitted from the similar sources.

  • Theoretically, spectral method has the highest accuracy among present numerical methods, but it is generally difficult to apply to complex terrains because of complex boundary conditions. Recently, spectral-element method, basically divide the domain into a set of rectangular subdomain and solve the equation at each subdomain, has been introduced. However, boundary conditions become more complex and requires more computing time, thus spectral-element method is not powerful for all complex terrain problems. In this paper, potential flow theory was intorduced to solve the air flows and diffusion phenomenon in the presence of terrain obstacles. Using the velocity potential-stream line orthogonal coordinate space, the diffusion problems of hilly terrain by pseudospectral method were solved and compared those with no terrain real scale solutions.
