Objective: The purpose of this study was to measure the morphological characteristics of the foot and biomechanical variables of the lower extremity joints during vertical jump and investigate the relationship between foot morphology and biomechanics of vertical jump. Method: 24 men in their 20s (age: 22.42 ± 1.41 yrs, height: 173.37 ± 4.61 cm, weight: 72.02 ± 6.21 kg, foot length: 251.70 ± 8.68 mm) participated in the study. Morphological characteristics of the foot included the length of the first toe, the length of the second toe, and the horizontal length from the center of ankle joint to the achilles tendon (Plantar Flexion Moment Arm [PFMA]). Biomechanical variables were measured for plantar flexor strength of the ankle joint and peak angular velocity, moment, and power of the lower extremity joint during vertical jump. Results: There was a significant correlation between the length of the first toe and plantar flexion strength at 30°/s [r=.440, p=.016], the angular velocity of the metatarsophalangeal [MTP] joint [r=-.369, p=.038] while significant correlations between PFMA and the angular velocities of the knee joint [r=.369, p=.038] and ankle joint [r=.420, p=.021] were found. There were also significant correlations between the length of the first toe and the maximum moment of the hip joint [r=.379, p=.034], and the length of the second toe and the power of the hip joint [r=-.391, p=.029]. Finally, significant correlations between PFMA and the power of the ankle joint [r=.424, p=.019] and MTP joint [r=.367, p=.039] were found. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the length of the toe and PFMA would be related to the function of the lower extremity joint. Therefore, this should be considered when designing the functional structure of a shoe. Furthermore, this relationship can be applied to intensive training for the plantar flexors and toe flexors to improve power in athletic performance.
This study is to define how the difference of athletic change influence on the last regrasp after somersault in Belle movement of parallel bars. For his study, the following conclusion was produced by analysis of athletic change by means of three dimensional visual image in three athlete of nation. 1. As the picture of S1, there are total used time(2.01 sec), S3(2.17 sec) and S2(2.19 sec). In case of a short needed time, it is difficult for them to perform the remaining movement of the vertical elevating flight easily and comfortably, it is judged as performing the small movement with restrict swing. 2 In the change of body center sped by each event, it is calculated as $-89.1^{\circ}$ the narrowest in S1, $-81.96^{\circ}$ the widest and then $86.34^{\circ}$ in S3. In E3 event, average compound speed is 4.07m/s, S2 showed the fastest speed of 4.14m/s whereas S1 the narrowest angle of 3.95m/s. 3. A shoulder joint and coxa are the period of mention in E3. In E4 which was pointed out the longest vertical distance, S2 that is indicated the highest vertical height as the period of detach in parallel bars. showed -3.91m. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) is one of the most popular turfgrasses for high-quality playing surface such as putting green on golf courses and athletic fields. Continues damage such as divot injury on creeping bentgrass is major issue to maintain golf course properly. Although plentiful researches to maximize divot resistance have been reported, minimal research has focused on relation between nitrogen (N) sources and divot resistance. The study was conducted to determine the effect of N source for turfgrass divot recovery and overall tee performance. Eleven fertilizer treatments as N sources were applied to creeping bentgrass 'Penncross'. Before the first application, divot injuries were simulated by removing a core of soil and turfgrass from established plots and backfilling with native soil. Data collection included turfgrass color and quality. N release speed did not influenced divot recovery. Frequency of urea application had no effects on divot recovery. Urea with split application had no difference with no treatment for divot recovery. Polyon product especially polyon mini (41-0-0) had the best performance for divot recovery and for maintaining better turfgrass quality. Overall, small particle size of slow-release N form would influence creeping bentgrasss to recover divot damage.
This study was conducted in order to improve nutritional support based on analysis of the eating habits and training schedule of junior and senior high school fencers. A survey was conducted on 30 fencers (junior boys=9, girls=7; senior boys=4, girls=10) using a questionnaire. Total daily calorie intakes were 2325.7${\pm}$1168.5 kcal (boy), 2344.0${\pm}$786.3 kcal (girl) for junior fencers and 2183.3${\pm}$726.6 kcal (boys), 2654.4${\pm}$1043.6 kcal (girls) for senior fencers. Nutrients below the RDIs were riboflavin and vitamin C for junior boy fencers and vitamin A, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C for senior boy fencers. The rates of the participants who had obtained nutritional information were 44.4% (boys) and 14.3% (girls) for junior fencers and 50.0% (boys) and 80.0% (girls) for senior fencers. Approximately half of the fencers had meals twice a day (55.6% for junior boy fencers, 57.1% for junior girl fencers, and 50.0% for senior fencers). The number of the fencers who were interested in nutrition varied: 66.7% and 28.6% of the junior boy and girl fencers answered they were interested in nutrition, while 25% and 60% of the senior boy and girl fencers showed interest in nutrition issues. Recommendations of total calories were 2,874 kcal (boys) and 2,377 kcal (girls) for junior fencers and 3,398 kcal (boys) and 2,375 kcal (girls) for senior fencers respectively. A dietary plan for the fencing players during training periods was designed to improve their health and performance. Athletes can simultaneously refuel and repair their bodies while contributing to their rehydration goals by consuming fluids that are sources of carbohydrates and protein, e.g., flavored milk and liquid meal supplement. Specific sport nutrition education applicable to athletes, especially young athletes, is recommended under professional support. Professionals may then target particular categories of athletes for the development of educational programs aimed at improving growth and athletic performance.

This study was conducted to evaluate the long-term effects of training on the physical development and exercise performance of adolescent weightlifters, aiming to provide effective training and management strategies for improving competitive performance. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, adolescent weightlifters from middle and high schools in Chungcheongnam-do province [male middle school-aged athletes, n=5; female middle school-aged athletes, n=5; male high school-aged athletes, n=12; female high school-aged athletes, n=8] were examined over approximately 10 months of weightlifting-based training to analyse the changes in body composition, physical fitness (muscular strength, muscular endurance, agility, flexibility, dynamic balance, coordination), and isokinetic muscular function (trunk and lower extremity). As a result, it was found that the physical development of middle and high school-aged athletes underwent physical development primarily characterized by an increase in lean body mass. Additionally, back muscle strength and power, which contribute to rapid and efficient force transmission between the upper and lower body, as well as grip strength necessary for controlling the barbell with a stable grip, are significant factors. These aspects were notably enhanced through specialized training and competitive experience for weightlifting performance at the high school level. On the other hand, changes in factors beyond the primary physical attributes contributing to weightlifting performance were limited, suggesting differences in effectiveness likely stemming from the specific composition of training programs or the athletes' experience and skill levels. Collectively, the findings from this study, which evaluates the physical characteristics and exercise abilities of adolescent weightlifters, are expected to contribute to improved competitive performance of weightlifters.
Skeletal muscle fatigue is often associated with diminished athletic performance and inability to maintain an expected force output as a function of time. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of duration of exercise on skeletal muscle fatigue between Weight Lifters(WL) and Non-Weight Lifters(NWL). There were twelve normal healthy adult volunteers, ranging in age from 18 to 35 years. The group consisted of six NWL and six WL. Randomized cross-over design was set up and work-rest cycle was 8 minutes work and 1 minute rest based on 15% MVC. Muscle fatigue was measured by the amount of force produced by the wrist flexor muscle and EMG amplitude over time. Repeated measures ANOVAs($2{\times}4$) were used to determine two types of subjects(WL, NWL) during four different duration of exercises(16, 32, 48, 64 minutes). The force decreased over time in NWL and WL, but there was no significant difference(F=2.83, p>0.05). However, the EMG amplitude increased in WL(0.8200) and NWL(0.6348). The WL exhibited an increase in EMG at the end of the period, especially at 48 minutes of exercises than did the NWL(F=9.58, p<.05). This suggests the WL were able to adjust to prolonged effort with adaptations in neural effect over time, resulting in higher EMG amplitude. That is, WL may be able to learn to recruit more motor units with training. It is important to the degree of neuromuscular fatigue and the time needed for recovery may differ considerably between WL and NWL, there is a need to plan proper strength training or rehabilitation protocols to match with the requirements in different characteristics of groups.
Background: Ma-huang (Ephedra sinica) has been widely used to treat respiratory disease in oriental medicine for over a hundred years. Ma-huang preparations contain approximately 1.25% ephedrine alkaloids. Recently, the ephedra alkaloids have received much press lately due to adverse effects in those using whole extracts as 'dietary supplements' for weight loss or athletic performance enhancement, and these reports are troubling given the increasing use of Ma-huang by the general public. The purpose of this report is to determine the proper dosage to minimize adverse effects and maximize the potential curative value. Objectives : The object of this study was to find an effective yet low risk dosage of Ma-huang. Methods : The study was designed as a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial. The subjects of this study were 26 adults between 20 to 40 of age who agreed to participate in this study. They were allocated through randomization into three groups. Each group took three opaque capsules three times a day. A group (N=9) took one Ma-huang capsule and two placebo capsules, B group (N=8) took two Ma-huang capsules and one placebo capsule, C group (N=9) took three Ma-huang capsules. The total trial periods was two days. To compare the adverse effects of Ma-huang according to dosage, blood pressure and pulse were checked, and other adverse effects were assessed using a morning questionnaire, patient's global assessment scale and Wong-Baker faces pain rating. Results : The following result were obtained: 1. After taking 18 g of Ma-huang per day, pulse rate had a significant increase. 2. After taking more than 6 g of Ma-huang per day, palpitation would be increased significantly. 3. After taking more than 18 g of Ma-huang per day, tiredness would be increased significantly. Conclusion: According to the results, 12 g of Ma-huang per day will minimize adverse effects and maximize the potential curative value.
As diverse physiological functions of taurine have been reported, taurine-containing health drinks and products are marketed worldwide for the treatment of various conditions such as improvements of liver, heart and circulatory functions or as an aid to athletic performance. Although animal studies have shown that taurine is fairly safe when supplemented in the diet for an extended period, the effective dose range of taurine for dietary supplements is in controversy. Reports on dietary taurine intakes have been sparse, and would serve as a guideline for determining an appropriate taurine dosage. The present study was aimed to estimate dietary intake level of taurine using the taurine content database of commonly used food stuffs established recently in our laboratory, and also to evaluate plasma concentration and urinary excretion of taurine in adolescents and adults residing in Seoul area. Dietary taurine intakes of the subjects were 219$\pm$16.9mg/day for 16-19 years old(n=123), 177$\pm$18.1mg/day for adults older than 20 years old(n=123). Male subjects(n=115) consumed 216$\pm$21.1mg of taurine/day, while female subjects(n=131) consumed 181$\pm$14.3mg of taurine/day(p<0.05). The level of dietary taurine intake was positively correlated with the levels of dietary intakes of energy, carbohydrate, total lipids, cholesterol, vitamin A, vitamin B$_1$, niacin, vitamin C, calcium, phosphorous, sodium and potassium at p<0.01, and with dietary intakes of iron and animal lipids at p<0.05, respectively. Plasma taurine concentration of subjects were 135$\pm$5.9$\mu$mol/L, which is considered to be within a normal range for healthy subjects. The subjects excreted 1158$\pm$72.7nmol/ of tarine mg creatinine in their urine, which is approximated as 150-170mg of taurine/24hr urine based on the assumption that 18mg creatinine/kg/day is excreted in the urine of healthy adults, and this would be about 80% of the daily taurine intake observed in the same subjects. Dietary taurine intake level was positively correlated with plasma taurine concentration, as well as with urinary taurine excretion corrected by creatinine excretion at p<0.05. The present study was the first report of taurine intake, and plasma concentration and urinary excretion of taurine in a Korean population so far, and these results would serve as an index for the future study evaluating taurine status in a diverse population within and outside Korea. This study is an experiment to look into recovering process after maximum anaerobic exercise of career wrestlers and their basic fitness. First, group time results in anaerobic power test did not show meaningful differences between groups in PP, MP, LP field. Second, blood glucose showed meaningful difference in 5-year wrestlers group according to time-wise result (p<.001). Third, time-wise results in blood lactic acid concentration showed meaningful difference all in 5-year, 10-year and 15-year career wrestlers group (p<.001). Fourth, side step and general reaction did not show meaningful differences in all the 3 groups. In conclusion, increase or decrease was seen from and also significant differences were seen from the change of anaerobic power, glucose, lactic acid, concentration, basic physical strength reaction which have influence over athletic performance of players after anaerobic exercise. It was found that 5-year career players group was good at variables of power test and glucose. Reason why recovery capability in connection with degree of fatigue was poor in 15-year career players group seemed to have correlation between career and age.
The purpose of this research was to investigate how the plyometric training and weight training program, applied in the field for exercise performance of throwing players, influenced improvement of athletic abilities, including agility, maximum muscular power, and strength. After implementing plyometric training and weight training to 21 high school throwing players for 10 weeks, we designed the next step. The 21 subjects were divided into two groups - women's group and men's group. All subjects were tested to determine agility using sidestep, burpee test, reaction time, lower body power and strength using standing long jump, standing jump, 30 m running, squats and leg presses. Additionally, isokinetic strength was measured using Cybex isokinetic dynamometer. The results showed that both groups demonstrated improvement in the standing long jump, standing jump and 30 m running after training. Particularly, the women's group indicated better improvement. Second, women's groups showed higher improvement in the sidestep and burpee test. However, in the reaction time test, the men's group indicated better improvement. Third, both groups showed better improvement in squats and leg presses after training. Particularly, the women's group indicated better improvement. Fourth, in the left and right side extension torque and flexion torque at a velocity of $60^{\circ}$/sec, both groups showed better improvement after training. In the left side extension peak torque, the men's group showed higher improvement, but the women's group showed higher improvement in the left side flexion and extension peak torque. Fifth, both groups showed better improvement in bench pressing and back strength after training. Particularly, the women's group indicated higher improvement.
