Purpose: This study was performed to know whether [$^{18}F$]Fluorothymidine (FLT) positron emission tomography (PET) can be used to monitor early response to radiotherapy in comparison with [$^{18}F$]Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET, and to establish the optimal imaging time for prediction of therapy response. Materials and Methods: Two patients with nasopharyngeal cancer underwent serial FLT PET and FDG PET before and during radiotherapy. Three on-treatment FLT and FDG PET scans were performed on 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks (at each time of 10 Gy, 20 Gy and 30 Gy delivered). The peak standardized uptake values ($SUV_{peak}$) of primary tumors were measured on FLT and FDG PET. Then, percent changes of $SUV_{peak}$ after therapy were calculated. Results: In two patients, baseline values of $SUV_{peak}$ on FDT PET were higher than those on FLT PET (FLT vs FDG; 3.7 vs 5.0, and 5.7 vs 15.0). In patient 1, FLT $SUV_{peak}$ showed 78%, 78% and 84% of decrease on 1 week, 2 and 3 weeks after treatment, whereas FDG $SUV_{peak}$ showed 18%, 52% and 66% of decrease, respectively. In patient 2, FLT $SUV_{peak}$ showed 75%, 75% and 68% of decrease, whereas FDG $SUV_{peak}$ showed 51%, 49% and 58% of decrease, respectively. Both patients reached to complete remission after radiotherapy. Conclusion: After radiotherapy, the decrease of FLT tumor uptake preceded the decrease of FDG tumor uptake in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer, and 1 week after therapy may be appropriate time for the assessment of early response. FLT PET might be more useful than FDG PET for monitoring early response to radiotherapy.
Patulin, a mycotoxin mainly produced by Penicillium and Aspergillus, is found in various foods. In the present, a maximum acceptable level for patulin is established at $50{\mu}g/kg(ppb)$ in apple juices and apple concentrates in Korea. But patulin may be detected in foods produced with other fruits. In the present study, patulin contamination was analyzed in 520 samples of fruit juices and beverages, and 50 samples of fruit juice concentrates. High performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) was applied to quantitatively analyze patulin levels in samples and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC/MS/MS) was used to remove false positive results. The results showed that three samples of 520 fruit juices and beverages and five samples of 50 fruit juice concentrates were contaminated by patulin, $9.8-18.0{\mu}g/kg$ and $4.7-18.2{\mu}g/kg$ respectively. Contaminated samples were produced with apple, orange or pear. This indicates that it is necessary to extend the regulatory range of patulin. In the other hands, the present study confirmed the effectiveness of LC/MS/MS analytical method to remove false positive results.

Pine wilt disease has greatly damaged pine forests not only in East Asia including South Korea and China, but also in European region. The damage caused by pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) is expressed in bundles within stands and rapidly spreading, however, present field survey methods have limitations to detecting damaged trees at regional level. This study extracted the damaged trees by pine wilt disease using time series hyperspectral aerial photographs, and analyzed their distribution characteristics. Hyperspectral aerial photographs of 1 meter spatial resolution were obtained in June, September, and October. Damaged trees by pine wilt disease were extracted using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Vegetation Index green (VIgreen) of the September photograph. Among extracted damaged trees, dead trees with leaves and without leaves were classified, and the spectral reflectance values from the photographs obtained in June, September, and October were compared to extract new outbreaks in September and October. Based on the time series dispersion of extracted damaged trees, nearest neighbor analysis was conducted to analyze distribution characteristics of the damaged trees within the region where hyperspectral aerial photographs were acquired. As a result, 2,262 damaged trees were extracted in the study area, and 604 dead trees (dead trees in last year) with leaves in relation to the damaged time and 300 and 101 newly damaged trees in September and October were classified. The result of nearest neighbor analysis using the data shows that aggregated distribution was the dominant pattern both previous and current year in the study area. Also, 80% of the damaged trees in current year were found within 60 m of dead trees in previous year.
Consistent information on the chemical composition and its seasonal variation of goat udder half milk is limited in Korea. The objective of this study was to analyze the seasonal variation of the chemical composition of goat milk to take establish various parameters into consideration on the pricing of the goat milk. Variations in chemical composition, somatic cell count (SCC) and bacterial count of 1,038 udder half milk samples from 650 heads raised in 7 farms of Jeonnam province were determined by season. Fat, protein, lactose, non-fat solids, milk urea nitrogen (MUN), pH, SCC and bacterial counts were also analyzed. The average composition of the milk was: fat $3.80{\pm}1.36%$, protein $3.23{\pm}0.80%$, lactose $4.39{\pm}0.54%$, total solids $12.18{\pm}1.80%$, non-fat solids $8.38{\pm}0.80%$, and milk urea nitrogen $28.44{\pm}5.00mg/dL$. The average pH was $6.81{\pm}0.24$. The average of SCC and bacterial counts were $2.54{\pm}4.60{\times}10^6cells/mL$ and $1.25{\pm}3.76{\times}10^5CFU/mL$, respectively. The present study reports the density, growth and production of a razor clam, Sinollovacula constricta, which is known to be one of the important fishreies catches from the Korean tidal flat. The annual yield reached to about 6,000 metric tons per year till 1994. The study was conducted on the Hwaseong tidal flat located on the central west coast, 40 kilometers south-west from Seoul. The annual yield of the razor clam in this area reached to about 50% of the total catch from the whole Korean coast. Samples were colleted monthly at 14 occasions from May 1992 to August 1993. Density of S. constricta ranged from 92~165 individuals per square meter during the study period. General trend of decreasing density was observed when the animal became older, but an exception was the year class of 1991 whose density was lower than that of 1990. The size of the shell was clearly separated into two classes during fall and winter (from September to February), however, the maximum frequency of the length of small size classes moved to right after February. It indicates a fast growth of young clams from spring to summer. Fast growth of the shell could also be examined by the growth curve. The shell growth of the whole life span was described by the von Bertalanffy equation of $L_t=89.3{\times}[1{\exp}\{-0.58{\times}(t+0.73\}]$. The growth in flesh dry weight was well fitted to the Gompertz growth model with the equation, $W_t=5.00{\times}{\exp}\{-4.31{\times}{\exp}(-0.043{\times}t)\}$. The clam lost about 30% of the body weight during spawning in August. The annual production calculated based on the data from September 1992 to August 1993 amounted to 150 g $DW{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$ which was 2~50 fold higher than those of other bivalves occurred in Korea. This estimate was patitioned by each year classes; 87.5 by 1992, 53.4 by 1991, 59.0 by 1990 and -30.0 g $DW{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$ by 1989 year class.
Small-sized tuber of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.) is more preferred by Korean consumers, because it is convenient to eat with hands, and can easily be steamed or roasted in small pan as a healthy snack for a small family. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of high-density plantings and harvesting times on production of smallsized tuber (50~200 g). Four varieties ('Annobeny', 'Daeyumi', 'Shinzami', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were planted in 2-row zigzag high-density planting ($75{\times}30cm$, A; $75{\times}25cm$, B) and 1-row planting ($75{\times}25cm$, control) covered with black vinyl film on May 23th, 2014. Marketable yields and small-sized tuber yields were compared between 120- and 150-day harvesting. Vine length and fresh weight per plant were significantly decreased in 2-row planting A and B plots compared to the control at 120 days after planting. Weight of tuber per plant, mean weight of tuber and number of tuber per plant were significantly decreased in 120-day harvesting of A and B plots than in the control. Marketable yields per 10a were increased by 17% ($2.4ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) and 8% ($2.6ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) in 120-day harvesting of A and B plots compared to the control ($2.4ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$), and those were largely increased by 29% ($4.0ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) and 26% ($3.9ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) in 150-day harvesting than in the control ($3.1ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$). Proportions of small size tuber (50~200 g) were increased by about 65% in 150-day harvesting of A and B plots compared to the control (55.3%). Small-size tuber yield and marketable yield were highly increased in 150-day harvesting of 2-row zigzag high-density planting A ($75{\times}30cm$).
Internationally different food safety regulation and standards could cause troubles in trade unless those are built on scientific knowledge. In this research, we monitored the microbial population and analyzed the results to determine the level of microbial contamination in foodstuffs using relatively new statistical analysis (microbiological sampling plan, International Commission on Microbiological Specification for Foods). The goal of this research falls on establishing entirely new standards for various food categories addressed in the Korean "Food Code". Targets for monitoring were indicator organisms (i.e. total aerobic count, coliform and Escherichia coli) and foodborne pathogens (i.e. Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens) in ready-to-eat (RTE) products. As the result of the monitoring, total aerobic count, coliform, E. coli, and B. cereus in RTE products were found at the mean values of 2.10 log CFU/g, -0.60 log CFU/g, -1.33 log CFU/g and -1.23 log CFU/g, respectively. S. aureus was detected with the level of -1.35 log CFU/g only in fresh-cut food, while C. perfringens was -1.37 log CFU/g only in ready-to-cook food. Other samples did not have any food borne pathogens. Total aerobic count, B. cereus, S. aureus and C. perfringens satisfied the Food Code (the MFDS). On the basis of the analysis, we proposed a draft of microbial criteria for RTE products.
The monitoring of the uniconazole residual pesticide for agricultural products was conducted by multiclass pesticide multiresidue methods. Samples were collected from June to November, 2011. Uniconazole pesticide was detected in 49 samples from a total of 3,939 samples. The amount of uniconazole pesticide ranged from 0.09 to 17.89 mg/kg in 49 samples. This method was described for the simultaneous determination of uniconazole by gas chromatography with a nitrogen phosphorus detector (GC-NPD) and mass spectrometry (MS). The limit of detection and quantification were 0.006 and 0.018 mg/kg GC-NPD, respectively. For an evaluation of the GC-NPD method, uniconazole spiked into gyeojachae at a level of 0.5, 5 mg/kg was determined. The recoveries of uniconazole by the GC-NPD method ranged from 83.4 to 101.4%. The results indicate that the method of simultaneous analysis is applicable to uniconazole analysis.
The feasibility of reutilization of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) or struvite slurry recovered from the process through microwave irradiation was studied in this experiment. For this purpose, 4 different operations were performed with or without Mg source addition and different levels of MAP recycled in a batch reactor. Dissolution rate of MAP, ${NH_4}^+$ elimination pattern and physicochemical changes of MAP during microwave irradiation were also studied. The result showed that only 33% orthophosphate ($PO_4-P$) and 27% $NH_4-N$ removal occurred without adding any external Mg source (run A), whereas 87% $PO_4-P$ and 40% $NH_4-N$ removed when 1.0 M ratio of $MgCl_2$ (run B) was added based on $PO_4-P$ in influent. Although the addition of 1.0 molar ratio of microwave irradiated MAP (Run C) removed lower $PO_4-P$ and $NH_4-N$ than 1.0 M $MgCl_2$ (run B), $PO_4-P$ removal was double when compared with no Mg addition (run A). Addition of half MAP and half $MgCl_2$ (run D) showed the similar removal efficiency (88% $PO_4-P$ and 35% $NH_4-N$) with sole $MgCl_2$ addition (run B). Based on these results, the reutilization of MAP irradiated by microwave would be a feasible way to enhance the removal efficiencies of N and P, as well as curtail the Mg chemical usage. Track study showed that $NH_4-N$ gradually increased at initial stage of microwave irradiation of MAP, and then started eliminating from liquor as temperature increased over $45^{\circ}C$. Dissolution rate of ${PO_4}^{-3}$ during microwave irradiation was proportional to the initial MAP concentration, having $0.0091x^{0.6373}$ mg/sec. It was found from the scanning electron microscope (SEM) study that physical structure of MAP crystal started breaking down into small cube granules within very short time by electromagnetic vibration force during microwave irradiation and then gradually melted down into solution.

The movement distance and home range size of Pelophylax chosenicus were identified in the rice paddy and ecological park as alternative habitats from July to November 2017. A total of 39 frogs were tracked by radio tracking method. As a result, the average move distance in the population of rice paddy was 11.7 ± 1.9 m (n = 64) and the population of ecological park was 24.7 ± 4.3 m (n = 39). The move distance between the two populations was significantly different. The mean MCP of the population of rice paddy was 181.2 ± 110.8 m2 (n = 11) and the population of ecological park was 416.1 ± 276.2 m2 (n = 10), but there was no significant difference. The population area of rice paddy was 4,160 m2 (Kernel density 95%) and the core area was 1,080 m2 (Kernel density 50%). The population area (Kernel density 95%) of ecological park was 5,391 m2 and the core area (Kernel density 50%) was 736 m2. This study shows that it is appropriate to construct the area of alternative habitat for P. chosenicus at least 1.33 ha, and it is more advantageous for the ecological park to be constructed than the paddy field with high development pressure and human interference. If the rice paddies were to be abandoned for several years, or to be used traditional farming methods, such as refraining from using agricultural machinery and chemicals, they could be used as alternative habitat for P. chosenicus.
