  • This paper investigates the presence of long-run and short-run price asymmetries in weekly gasoline prices from January 1997 to July 2008. In accordance with distribution channels, wholesale and retail stages are analyzed separately. An approach based on TAR and M-TAR cointegration tests, which entail matching asymmetric ECMs, is employed. For wholesale prices, asymmetries in the links with crude oil prices and exchange rates are found for both ECMs in the long-run and short-run. Exchange rates appear to play more significant role than crude oil prices in explaining the short-run price asymmetry. The rise in crude oil prices or exchange rates has statistically significant major impact on the increase of wholesale prices on the second week, not immediately as expected in the concept of 'rockets and feathers'. And asymmetrically, the fall does not have any statistically significant effect on the same period. The finding seems to be somewhat unusual. However, for retail prices, asymmetry m connection with wholesale prices is only revealed in the long-run. A symmetric price adjustment can be assumed in the short-run. Contrary to the long-run asymmetry found in the wholesale stage, in the retail stage, the speed of adjustment for negative deviations toward long-run equilibrium is faster than for positive ones, which is a phenomenon not favorable to consumers.

  • The present study examines the morning-afternoon asymmetry of the geosynchronous magnetic field strength on the dayside (magnetic local time [MLT] = 06:00~18:00) using observations by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) over a period of 9 years from February 1998 to January 2007. During geomagnetically quiet time (Kp < 3), we observed that a peak of the magnetic field strength is skewed toward the earlier local times (11:07~11:37 MLT) with respect to local noon and that the geosynchronous field strength is larger in the morning sector than in the afternoon sector. That is, there is the morning-afternoon asymmetry of the geosynchronous magnetic field strength. Using solar wind data, it is confirmed that the morning-afternoon asymmetry is not associated with the aberration effect due to the orbital motion of the Earth about the Sun. We found that the peak location of the magnetic field strength is shifted toward the earlier local times as the ratio of the magnetic field strength at MLT = 18 (B-dusk) to the magnetic field strength at MLT = 06 (B-dawn) is decreasing. It is also found that the dawn-dusk magnetic field median ratio, B-dusk/B-dawn, is decreasing as the solar wind dynamic pressure is increasing. The morning-afternoon asymmetry of the magnetic field strength appears in Tsyganenko geomagnetic field model (TS-04 model) when the partial ring current is included in TS-04 model. Unlike our observations, however, TS-04 model shows that the peak location of the magnetic field strength is shifted toward local noon as the solar wind dynamic pressure grows in magnitude. This may be due to that the symmetric magnetic field associated with the magnetopause current, strongly affected by the solar wind dynamic pressure, increases. However, the partial ring current is not affected as much as the magnetopause current by the solar wind dynamic pressure in TS-04 model. Thus, our observations suggest that the contribution of the partial ring current at geosynchronous orbit is much larger than that expected from TS-04 model as the solar wind dynamic pressure increases.

  • Defining right and left side differences in mandibular ramus height is one of the key elements in the diagnosis of facial asymmetry. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of correction of ramus height with frontal and lateral ramal inclinations (FRI and LRI) in 2-dimensional cephalograms and observe how this affects the diagnostic accuracy of asymmetry. Methods: Frontal and lateral cephalograms were obtained in 40 individuals with chin deviation. FRI and LRI were measured on each side and ramus height measurement was corrected with these inclinations using Pythagorean's theorem. The results of diagnosis before and after correction on cephalograms were compared with the results in 3D CT images. Results: Both FRI and LRI showed greater values in the contralateral side than in the chin-deviated side and these contributed to an increase in the right and left side ramus height differences. After comparison of diagnostic results before and after correction on cephalograms with the results on 3D CT images, the sensitivity increased significantly (from 74 to 94 %) whereas the specificity decreased (from 44 to 22 %). Overall accuracy increased from 68 to 78 % with the correction using FRI and LRI. Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate that correction of ramus height with FRI and LRI is useful for an accurate diagnosis of facial asymmetry on frontal cephalograms.

  • We demonstrated the pretilt angle effect on the viewing angle properties of a single-domain fringe-field switching (FFS) liquid crystal (LC) mode. By performing the Póincare sphere analysis, we investigated, in detail, the origin of the viewing angle asymmetry that exists in the single-domain FFS LC mode both in the field-on and field-off states. Using this analysis, we confirmed that the pretilt angle reduces the viewing angle symmetry in the single-domain FFS LC mode. Finally, we examined the effect of a zero pretilt angle on the viewing angle symmetry by evaluating real single-domain FFS LC cells.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to define the relation of the degree of menton deviation and 3-D CT (computerized tomography) measurements of the glenoid fossa and the mandible, which are considered to have an influence on menton deviation. Methods: The CT images were obtained in 60 adults and these were transmitted to a computer and reconstructed using computer software. According to the degree of the menton deviation, which was measured on the posteroanterior cephalogram, the subjects were divided into the menton deviated group (30 adults) and the symmetry group (30 adults). A total of 11 measurements that might have an effect on menton deviation were determined and these were measured in the right and left sides using the function of 3-D measurement in the computer program. The 11 measurements consist of 6 measurements in the glenoid fossa (vertical position of the glenoid fossa and articular eminence, the sagittal position of the glenoid fossa and articular eminence, the depth of the glenoid fossa, and the anterior angle of the glenoid fossa), and 5 measurements in the mandible (ramus length, frontal ramal inclination, lateral ramal inclination, body length, body height). Results: The comparison of the differences between the menton deviated and symmetry groups and correlation analysis on the degree of menton deviation were carried out. The results of comparison of the right and the left difference between the menton deviated and symmetry groups showed that the vertical position and depth of the glenoid fossa were significantly increased in the menton deviated group. Conclusion: The results of the present study show that consideration of the shape and position of the glenoid fossa is necessary for making the diagnosis and administering proper treatment in facial asymmetry patients and especially growing patients.

  • The purpose of this study investigates the relationship between business strategy and cost behavior according to the corporate life cycle. To do so, I first examine the relationship between cost behavior and business strategy. And then, I analyze the effect of the business strategy on cost behavior conditional upon corporate life cycle based on listed Korean firms from 2000 to 2019. Specifically, the business strategy index is calculated by using the six continuous financial factors and the Prospector and Defender was defined on the score. Also, the corporate life cycle is distinguished based on the cash flow pattern. I find the evidence that the Prospector firms are likely to strengthen the asymmetry of cost behavior (cost stickiness), and examined that such a relationship was most strongly represented in the Introduction. This study is meaningful in that this is a more comprehensive analysis by examining business strategy and cost strategy according to the corporate life cycle and expand the application of financial information by using financial indicators to distinguish business strategies.

  • Banks traditionally focus on the financial services against the uncertain future liquidity needs, i.e. saving as well as lending. As the business model of banks has been shifted from the originate to hold model to the originate to distribute model since the enactment of Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act in 1999, the financial services encompass information gathering and generating, underwriting and risk sharing through packaging claims for the investors, in addition to the payment and settlement services. Ensued are the financial market integration and diversification of financial services, with which the accessibility to financial services is arguably significantly enhanced. Such integration and diversification necessarily entails the risk of contagion due to the non-fulfilling service over the several other financial services, which would be contained easily under the separate financial services. This paper addresses the pricing of fees for the integrated financial services through which the contagion could spread when the users of financial service are not immune to the failure to fulfill their obligation due to the economic turmoil. Consequently the information asymmetry about the clients is unavoidable. Higher fees could drive out the otherwise good clients out of the pool of customers for the financial services. Then, the risk could be exacerbated due to the proliferation of bad clients who are vulnerable to the financial distress and liquidity crunch. So the banks should take into account the interactional effect of the fees between/among the non interest based activities and interest based activities under the information asymmetry. Contrary to our general perception, the current analysis demonstrates that the bank should focus on the reduction of cost associated with good clients rather than that of bad clients.

  • Effect of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF, DWP401) on fetal external, visceral and skeletal malformation during organogenesis was examined. Pregnant Sprauge-Daw ley rats were administered with 0.2, 1 and 5mg/kg/day subcutaneously on gestation day 6 through 16. Dams were sacrified at 20th day of gestation. Materal body weight, food consumption and clinical observation were not changed. Significant dose-dependent increase of relative and absolute liver weight were observed in the treatment group, whereas other organ weights were not changed. Placental weight of 1 and 5mg/kg/day group and number of resorption in 5mg/kg/day treatment group were significantly increased. External and visceral malformation of fetuses were not observed with treatment. However, skeletal variations(increase of asymmetry sternebrae, decrease of dumb-bell and asymmetry sternbrae at 5mg/kg/day, and fused stemebrae at 5mg/kg/day) were observed. These results showed that rhEGF (DWP401) may not have embryo and/or fetal developmental toxicity effect in rats.

  • The extended analysis on the diverging flow through asymmetric membrane pores has been performed in this study. Afore rigorous equations of velocity profile relevant to the divergent slit and cone shaped channels, which are widely used as a general pore model, have been obtained by employing a creeping flow approach of Newtonian fluids. As a degree of asymmetry (i.e., diverging angle) is increased, the predicted flow function shifts Toward the center region due to the incorporated wall effect, so that the overall velocity profile becomes decreased. It is true, as expected, that when the divergent channel is in the low diverging angle limit, the channel flow results in the Poiseuillean fashion by utilizing a lubrication approximation. The flow rate equation of each type of channel has been developed from the combined solution of velocity profile and pressure fields. The effect of diverging flow on the flow rate enhancement has been remarkably predicted, in which the flow rate increases with the increase of pore asymmetry. The advantage of our theoretical results lies in the analytical expression for the diverging flow behavior through pore channels as well as its ability to play a fundamental role on the related membrane filtrations such as microfiltration and ultrafiltration.
