  • The program for overcoming shyness consisted of four step-by-step parts, understanding shyness, overcoming anxiety, improving self-esteem, and promoting self-assertion. Participants were 6 boys and 10 girls from three kindergarten classes. The two gender groups were randomly assigned to either the experimental or the control group. The experimental group participated in the program for 50 minutes per day twice a week for 12 sessions, and the control group received no treatment. Eight non-shy children also joined the program in the ninth and tenth sessions. Findings indicated that shyness in the experimental group decreased significantly while the control group maintained previous levels of shyness, implying that early intervention programs have potential effectiveness for reducing shyness in young children.

  • In this study, mothers of 205 4- to 5-year-old preschoolers responded to aggression episodes of Werner et al. (2006); preschoolers' teachers responded to the Preschool Social Behavior Scale (Crick et al., 1997). Results showed, (1) boys exhibited more overt and relational aggression. (2) In overt aggression episodes, mothers used encouragement to boys and rule violation responses to girls; in relational aggression episodes, mothers used encouragement and power assertion responses to girls. (3) Mothers' power assertion about overt aggression related negatively with preschoolers' overt aggressive behaviors; mothers' discussion about relational aggression related positively with preschoolers' overt aggressive behaviors. Implications of these findings for the mothers' responses by aggression types were discussed in order in better understand preschooler's aggressive behaviors.

  • This paper describes an Security Manager that integrally manages the Information Service related to RFID middleware, Object Name Service, and Web Service for upper level applications. In order to provide the access control of distributed RFID objects, Single-Sign-On has been implemented by extending existing UCON (Usage Control) model and SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) assertions. The security technology of distributed RFID systems can be included in middleware and protect RFID information. In the future, it can be also applied to ubiquitous sensor networks.

  • By analyzing a national survey of public understanding of science and technology, this paper attempts to examine public perceptions of scientists and engineers in Korea. A special attention is given to the gap in the view of scientists and engineers across generation, gender, and class fields (or major fields). This paper shows that generation has the strongest effect on public perceptions of scientists and engineers among all the socio-demographic factors examined in this study. Those over 50 are more likely to have the conventional idealized images of scientists and the stereotypical negative images of scientists simultaneously, while the 20s are less likely to accept the idealized image of scientists. The survey result thus may suggest that the younger generation began to depart from a patriotic and moral description of scientists and engineers-for the younger generation, science and engineering is losing moral respect but becomes perceived as an ordinary occupation. Contrary to the popular belief, however, gender has little effect on public perceptions of scientists and engineers. This finding questions the assertion that female students possess more negative attitudes toward scientists and engineers than male students, and thus are reluctant to develop careers related to science and engineering. By uncovering that class fields (or major areas) have no effect on the image of scientists, this study also call into question the assertion in the science wars that the inadequate appreciation of science particularly among those who do not major in science and engineering is responsible for inadequate support for science and technology.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between emotional competence and social adjustment among Korean children and adolescents. The subjects of this study were 380 children between fifth and sixth grade ages and 579 middle school students. Their emotional competence was assessed by 'Korean Emotional Competence Scale (Kim et al., 2004),' and also their social adjustment by 'Social Adjustment Scale (Lee, 1994).' The data were analyzed by ANOVA, the Pearson's Correlation, and Regression, using SPSS. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Children's and adolescents' emotional competence and social adjustment had a meaningful difference according to SES, gender, and grade. (2) There was a significant, positive relationship between their emotional competence and social adjustment. Their social adjustment was related more strongly to factors, such as Self-expressiveness, Assertion, and Positive thinking, and also their emotional competence more to Self-adjustment and Emotional adjustment. (4) Social adjustment of children and adolescents was predicted best by Self-expressiveness and Assertion, Positive Thinking, Awareness and Understanding of Emotion, and Consideration factors of emotional competence.

  • This study is to review the oriental medical literatures about Chungye and endocrinologic literatures about menstration, pregnancy, menopause and male-sex cycle. The conclusions obtained are as follows; First, according to Naegyung, Chungye exists in both male and female, it makes human fertile. It comes with starting menstration and is exhausted with menopause. Second, it was said that the name of Chungye originated in Chun of Chunjinjiki(energy of genuine cosmos) and Gye of Imgyejisu(water of Imgye). Third, some authors advocated that Chungye is menstration. But it was criticized by other authors and it is not accepted at the present time. Forth, there was an assertion that Chungye is Eumjung. The assertion has been developed as the hypothesis that Chungye may be a endocrinologic substance relavant to menstration and pregnancy. Fifth, there was an interpretation that Chungye is FSH. But this interpretation might be unreasonable if it is based on the results observed by endocrinologic researches. According to the current endocrinologic researches, Chungye may be GnRH, when Chungye is the necessary endocrinologic substance to menstration and pregnancy, exists in male and female and is exhausted with menopause.

  • Using a sample of 107 married couples, this study investigated the influence of self-reported argument-communication behaviors on marital satisfaction. The results were as follows. (a) Wives used more criticism, contempt, and self-assertion during marital arguments than husbands. There were no significant gender differences in the levels of defensiveness, stonewalling, and active listening. (b) Multilevel analyses indicated that marital satisfaction was predicted by the person's own level of self-assertion and stonewalling(i.e., actor effects) and by his or her spouse's level of stonewalling(i.e., partner effect). No other significant actor and partner effects were found. Also, there were no significant gender differences in the sizes of effects. (c) A cluster analysis of both spouses' communication behaviors during marital arguments identified four distinct groups of married couples. : mutual constructive, husband constructive-wife destructive, husband destructive-wife constructive, and mutual destructive. Mutual constructive couples reported the best marital satisfaction.
