  • In this paper, we perform a ANSYS simulation of assembly structure composed of three parts, bolt, nut, and coil spring, under the loading of a screw torque 640~800 ($N{\cdot}m$) derived from the given bolt tensile strength 10.9, which allows us to investigate a lock-nut mechanism for the prevention of bolt-loosening after three parts are fastened. And also we investigate the safety factor of each component with effective stress distribution obtained from the simulation, which enables us to estimate the structural safety of a new lock-nut structure. Both simulation and investigation shown in this paper will contribute to the development of a new lock nut structure.

  • This study concerns with morphing structures, e.g. as applied in the aerospace industry. A morphing aerofoil structure capable of variable geometry was developed, which was shown to be able to cater for the different aerodynamic requirements at different stages of flight. In this work, the useful and relatively simple method has been applied, which provides a direct method for calculating required morphing shape displacements via finding the most effective bar through calculating bar sensitivity to displacement and calculating set of length actuations for bar assembly to control/adjust shape imperfection of prestressable structural assemblies including complex elements ("macro-elements", e.g., the pantographic element), involving Matrix Condensation. The technique has been verified by experiments on the physical model of an aerofoil shaped morphing pantographic structure. Overall, experimental results agree well with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, the technique of multi-iteration adjustment was presented that effective in eliminating errors that occur in the practical adjustment process itself. It has been demonstrated by the experiments on the physical model of pantographic morphing structure. Finally, the study discusses identification of the most effective bars with the objective of minimal number of actuators or minimum actuation.

  • The purpose of CIM for shipbuilding should be focused on the efficient processing of information among design, process planning and scheduling activities. The most essential technology for shipbuilding CIM is the product model. This model should not only define a physical product "ship" but also a process "ship production". Major activity for ship production is assembly, which requires intensive use of the relationships among parts of ship structure. Other production information are painting area. shape. weight, etc. The fact that major ship structure is "stiffened-plate" type, which allows us to handle the plate thickness as non-geometric information for practical purpose. Therefore. the geometric model for ship product model should handle the relationship among parts(so called topology) efficiently. We find that a face oriented non manifold data structure can meet this requirement. We apply this non-manifold data structure to the ship compartmentation, structural design, and assembly.

  • Synthetic zinc chlorins possessing a hydrophylic polyoxyethylene chain at the 17 -position were prepared. An amphiphilic zinc chlorin possessing a single chIorin moiety showed absorption maxima at 675 nm in an aqueous medium, indicating that the zinc chIorin did not form large aggregates but a dimeric structure. In contrast, amphiphilic zinc chlorin dyads in which two zinc chlorin moieties were connected with a hydrophilic polyoxyethylene linkage showed red-shifted absorption band around 720-740 nm in an aqueous medium. The result indicated that the amphiphilic zinc chlorin dyad self-aggregated to form chlorosome-like oligomer.

  • Potato virus X (PVX), the type member of Potexvirus genus, is a flexuous rod-shaped virus containing a single-stranded (+) RNA. Infection by PVX produces genomic plus- and minus-strand RNAs and two major subgenomic RNAs (sgRNAs). To understand the mechanism for PVX replication, we are studying the cis- and/or trans-acting elements required for RNA replication. Previous studies have shown that the conserved sequences located upstream of two major sgRNAs, as well as elements in the 5' non-translated region (NTR) affect accumulation of genomic and sg RNAs. Complementarity between sequences at the 5' NTR and those located upstream of two major sgRNAs and the binding of host protein(s) to the 5' NTR have shown to be important for PVX RNA replication. The 5 NTR of PVX contains single-stranded AC-rich sequence and stem-loop structure. The potential role(s) of these cis-elements on virus replication, assembly, and their interaction with viral and host protein(s) during virus infection will be discussed based on the data obtained by in vitro binding, in vitro assembly, gel shift mobility assay, host gene expression profiling using various mutants at these regions.

  • Generally industrial multi-articulated robots are used for parts assembly, welding, and painting processes. The high flexibility of them is very useful to not only parts assembly, welding, and painting processes, but also machining processes. But because of machining processes to need a high stiffness of machine structure, so machining is usually not tried at them, except deburring processes now. During past three years the works are carried out to improve the stiffness of a industrial multi-articulated robot With some gas spring as a first idea in this research area. As a result of that stiffness was significantly up, and found and investigated the machining possibility at it.

  • In recent years, young customers whose priority are on rationality and practicality of products and set a high value on space usage and storage efficiency have shown larger interest in knocked down furniture, thus its purchase has been on the rise. A baby bed design utilizing knocked down system suggested in this article, allows simple assembly and disassembly, easy transportation, easy movement, and also possible to recycle. Using laminated wood made of Douglas fir, a natural material, a baby bed is designed as knocked down structure. Its prototype is made to suggest easy assembly and disassembly design, which does not require any hardware. If efforts are put on the research of furniture design and its product development, focusing on the applicable usage and strength of knocked down furniture, it can become one of the solutions to the development of currently stagnant domestic furniture industry.

  • The synthesis of dendritic dipeptides $(4-3,4-3,5)12G2-CH_{2}-Boc-_{L}-Tyr-X-OMe\;where\;X\;=\;Gly,\;_{L}-Val,\;_{L}-Leu,\;_{L}-Ile,\;_{L}-Phe$, and L-Pro will be discussed. Their self-assembly in bulk and in solution and the structural and retrostructural analysis of their periodic assemblies will be compared to that of the previously reported and currently reinvestigated dendritic dipeptide with $X=_{L}-Ala$. All dendritic dipeptides containing as X nonpolar ${\alpha}-amino$ acids self-assemble into helical porous columns. The principles via which the aliphatic and aromatic substituents of X program the structure of the helical pores indicate synthetic pathways to helical pores with bioinspired functions based on artificial nonpolar ${\alpha}-amino$ acids will be discussed.

  • Palladium nanoparticles having cubic silsesquioxanes (POSS) (Pd-POSS) were produced by the reaction of palladium (II) acetate and octa(3-aminopropyl)octasilsesquioxane octahydrochloride (POSS-${NH_3}^+$ in methanol at room temperature. Functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT-COOH) were prepared by acid treatment of pristine MWNTs. The hybrid nanocomposites of Pd-POSS and MWNT-COOH (Pd-MWNT nanocomposites) were synthesized by self-assembly method via ionic interaction between positively charged Pd-POSS and negatively charged MWNT-$COO^-$. The spherical aggregates of Pd-POSS with a diameter of 40-60 urn were well attached to the surfaces of MWNT-COOH on Silicon wafer. The composition, structure, and surface morphology of Pd-MWNT nanocomposites were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometer, energy dispersive spectrum (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscope (AFM).

  • The welding distortion of a hull structure in the shipbuilding industry is inevitable at each assembly stage. The geometric inaccuracy caused by the distortion tends to preclude the introduction of automation and mechanization and needs the additional man-hours for the adjusting work at the following assembly stage. To overcome this problem, a distortion control method should be applied. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an accurate prediction method which can explicitly account for the influence of various factors on the welding distortion. In order to minimize the weld-induced angular distortion in thick weldments, this paper proposes the optimum groove design for various plate thicknesses as the distortion control method. The validity of this method has been substantiated by a number of numerical simulations and experiments.
