When reinforcing an existing building with the Concrete Filled Tube(CFT) structure, it is impossible to form a diaphragm inside with the existing method. Therefore, in this study, a construction method was proposed so that the internal diaphragm could be welded on four sides by using a slot to transmit force.
This paper focuses on the improvement of the influence coefficient matrix method for estimation of local ice load on the icebreaking research vessel ARAON. The influence coefficient matrix relates ice pressure on the hull plate to the measured/calculated hull strain/stress. Conventionally von Mises equivalent stresses representing hull stresses and ice pressure acting on the hull plate are utilized to assemble the influence coefficient matrix. Because of the three dimensional features of the ship-ice collision process, an enhanced method to assemble the influence coefficient matrix is derived considering ice loads in the X, Y, and Z direction simultaneously. Furthermore the location of ice loads acting on hull-plate may fall outside the measuring sensor area, and the enhanced influence coefficient matrix is modified to reduce the difference between the actual and the estimated ice loads by expanding the domain outward from the sensor area. The developed method for enhanced influence coefficient matrix is applied to IBRV ARAON during the 2019 Antarctic ice field test and the local ice loads in three directions are efficiently calculated compared to those by a conventional method.
Tau protein is one of the microtubule-associated proteins in the mammalian brain. In Alzheimer's disease, tau protein is immobilized in the somatodendritic compartment of certain nerve cells, where it forms a part of the paired helical filament (PHF). To understand the role of tau protein in the formation of PHF, a recombinant human tau protein expressed in Escherichia coli and five synthetic peptide fragments (peptide 1 to peptide 5), corresponding to the C-terminal region of tau protein, were prepared and their ability in self-assembly to form filamentous structures was examined. The recombinant human tau protein formed short rod-like structures in 0.1M MES buffer containing 1 mM $MgCI_2$, while a synthetic peptide fragment 1 containing 55 amino acid residues could assemble into a lot of long filamentous structures in water and particularly twisted helical structures in 0.1M MES buffer containing 1 mM $MgCI_2$. This suggests that the C-terminal region possesses a filament-forming ability and may be related to the formation of the helical structure by providing a powerful filament-forming driving force.
A linear motor has many advantages next to conventional feed mechanisms: high transitional speed and acceleration, high control performance, and good positioning accuracy at high speed. Through the omission of a power transfer element, the linear motor shows no wear and no backlash, has a long lifetime, and is easy to assemble. A disadvantage of the linear motor is low efficiency and resultant high-temperature rise in itself and neighboring structures during operation. This paper presents the thermal behavior of the linear motor as a feed mechanism in machine tools. To improve the thermal behavior, an insulation layer is used. By placing the insulation layer between the primary part and the machine table, both the temperature difference and the temperature fluctuation in the machine table due to a varying motor load are reduced.

This paper presents a method for deposition an individual carbon nanotube (CNT). The alignment of a single CNT is very useful to perform studies related to applications in FET (Field Emitted Transistor), SET (Single Electron Transistor) and to make chemical sensor as well as bio sensors. In this study, we developed the deposition method of a CNT individualized in a solution. Using the electrokinetic method, we found the optimum conditions to assemble the nanotube and discussed about plausible explanation for the assembling mechanism. These results will be available to use for making the CNT sensor device.
Subway operators in the country have their own heavy maintenance facilities for maintaining rolling stock(EMU). However, it is true that the heavy maintenance facilities are not utilized 100% with the recent trend of lengthening maintenance cycle(intervals). With the fact, this enabled the existing maintenance facilities to be utilized for other purposes. By taking advantage of spare facilities and the maintenance staff with rolling stock assembly abilities, subway operators can assemble rolling stock by procuring parts for the assembly instead of purchasing trains from other companies. It is estimated that this will enhance the operator's technology and have a great impact on the management skill as well. This study attempts to find out how the heavy maintenance factory can be utilized for rolling stock assembly.
A cholesterol-bridge-naphthopyran dyad (NP-MCB) was designed and synthesized. NP-MCB can readily self-assemble into gels under ultrasound-radiation in several organic solvents and the formed gels easily transfer to solution by heat. This reversible process can be repeated many times. Scanning Electron Microscopy results showed that the morphologies of all formed xerogels in different solvents have fibrillar microstructure. The gels formation was due to energy and pressure afforded by the ultrasonic process, resulting in formation of molecular hydrogen bonding and molecular aggregation. NP-MCB displayed the normal photochromism both in solution and gel states. The kinetic results confirm that the colored merocyanine in gels show a slower fading speed than that in solution due to the compact aggregation of NP-MCB molecules in gels. The xerogel film formed in polar gelling solvent had large surface wettability than that in nonpolar gelling solvent.
Catalase (CAT) decomposes hydrogen peroxide that is toxic to the body. In this study, simple and sensitive detector has been developed for observing catalase activity using liquid crystal droplet system. Microscale LC droplet patterns are formed by spreading aldehyde-doped nematic liquid crystal on pre-treated glass slides. When hydrogen peroxide is added, aldehyde is oxidized and amphiphiles are formed. Dodecanoates cause the pattern to transit from bright to dark as they self-assemble to form a carboxyalte monolayer at the interface. When a drop of pre-incubated CAT and hydrogen peroxide mixture is placed onto the pattern, bright fan-shape is observed. This planar optical appearance indicates that catalase has decomposed hydrogen peroxide. Compared to the detectors that have been previously developed, this system is more sensitive with detection limit of 1fM. This research suggests further studies to be on LC droplet patterning to develop highly sensitive and methodologically simple sensors for various chemicals.
