Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements have the advantage of durability and superior surface friction when compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, data collected to date generally show PCC pavements to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces. As the results of research, surfaces of exposed aggregate, tining and grooving concrete pavements appear to provide better noise quality characteristics as well as good frictional characteristics and durability. In this paper, several methods of texturing were considered to reduce tire/pavement noise. As the results of this paper, PCC pavements with special texturing have superior surface friction as well as noise reductions when compared to conventional PCC pavement. Especially, Exposed Aggregate Concrete (EAC) surface appears to provide better noise quality characteristics. Conclusively, if overall noise and safety are considered simultaneously, EAC pavement that provides satisfactory friction as well as better noise reductions is suggested.

The pavement stiffness is scarcely used in structural analysis to design the superstructure of bridge. It is reasonable not to consider it in the case of asphalt concrete pavement over concrete deck because the pavement stiffness compared with the concrete deck plate can be ignored. However, sometimes, the pavement materials have a similar amount of elastic modulus to concrete and are applied to the orthotropic steel deck plate which has relatively less stiffness compared with the concrete deck plate. In this paper, the steel plate deck of a real bridge project was analyzed by considering the pavement stiffness by linear elastic FEM. It was assumed that a perfect bond between the steel plate deck and the pavement exited. The results indicated that the structural behavior of the orthotropic steel deck plate can be estimated enough to affect the evaluation result of structural capacity in some cases. Therefore, the investigations by experimental tests and more advanced numerical model are indispensible in figuring the design formula for considering the effects of pavement stiffness in the structural analysis of an orthotropic bridge.

The stiffness of pavement is scarcely considered in structural analysis of the superstructure bridge. It will be reasonable in the case of asphalt concrete pavement over concrete deck plate because stiffness of the pavement compared with concrete deck plate can be ignored. Additionally, it is considered correct to do a design with a safety. However, various pavement materials which have even value reaching to the elastic modulus of concrete are applied to the orthotropic steel deck plate which has a relatively less stiffness comparing with the concrete deck plate. In this paper, the steel plate deck of the bridge of real project was modeled considering the pavement stiffness for the FEM analysis and the linear elastic analysis was performed. It was assumed to be perfectly bonded between the steel plate deck and the pavement and the temperature effect was ignored. It was analyzed on the vertical deflection of steel deck plate influencing to the serviceability of pavement and the bending stress of steel deck plate related to the fatigue life. As a result, It was indicated that the structural behavior of the orthotropic steel deck plate could be affected by the stiffness of pavement in some cases.
This study was Performed to evaluate applicability of color flexible pavement concrete (CFPC) for motorway pavement. Color flexible pavement has been applied to non-motorway pavements, such as pedestrian and bicycle road. Two polymers were used to modify the binder and to strengthen the stiffness of pavement mixture. Waste paper was used to prevent the asphalt of gap-grade mixture from draining. Marshall properties, indirect tensile strength(ITS), tensile strength ratio(TSR) before and after freezing-and-thawing treatment and artificial aging, permanent deformation and fatigue life were measured. Color bituminous concrete mixtures used this study had nearly the same quality in mechanical properties when compared with conventional asphalt concrete mixtures manufactured with AP-3 and all mixtures satisfied with domestic specification for motorway pavement. Therefore, it is proved that the color bituminous concrete used this study can be applied for motorway pavement.
During recent years researchers performed large effort to increase the service life and asphalt stability of the roads against traffic loads and weather conditions. Investigations carried out in various aspects such as changes in gradation, addition of various additives, changes in asphalt textures and etc. The objective of this research is to evaluate the advantages of adding recycled glass powder (RGP), Crumb Rubber (CR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) to base bitumen with grade of 60/70 for modification of asphalt concrete. Initial studies conducted for determining the physical properties of bitumen and modifiers. A series of asphalt concrete samples made using various combinations of RGP, CR, SBR, SBS and base bitumen. All samples tested using Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), Indirect Tensile Strength Modulus (ITSM) and Marshall Stability Tests. The new data compared with the results of control samples. The results showed that replacing RGP with known polymers improved ITS and ITSM results considerably. Also the Marshall Stability of modified mixtures using RGP is more than what is found for the base blend. Ultimately, the new RGP modifier had a huge impact on pavement performance and results in high flexibility which can be concluded as high service life for the new modified asphalt concrete.
Currently existing Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) systems developed in several countries have been employed mainly to test the performance of asphalt pavement. Meanwhile, the length of concrete pavement is similar to that of asphalt pavement in expressways of Korea. and is expected to increase due to its durability and compatibility to our weather condition. To meet the society's demand of having our own APT system which can examine the long-term performance of concrete pavement, a contract study to develop Korea Accelerated Loading and Environment Simulator (KALES) for concrete pavement has been performed for 3 years from 1997 through 1999. Through the project, a detailed design was Peformed for the KALES system in which the entire structure of KALES, loading mechanism, wandering mechanism, suspension system, driving system were proposed. Also in advance to design a full-scale KALES system, a sample scale model was manufactured and tested for operating motion and force distribution. It is evident that the proposed prototype KALES system will provide higher degree of traffic simulation and durable operation, based on the satisfactory fatigue analysis.

Distress data, IRI, etc. are important factors in the evaluation of pavement condition. Recently, the need to consider tire-pavement noise in PMS (pavement management system) is raised. Generally, tire-pavement noise highly depends on the characteristics of pavement texture. Therefore, estimation of texture characteristics may give useful information to predict tire-pavement noise. Measurement of MPD (Mean Profile Depth) by using PLP (Portable Laser Profiler) provide very fast. The texture characteristics by means of MPD can be in a short time. hence, It can be a good alternative to give noise information, if MPD and tire-pavement noise have robust relationship. In this study, MPD and tire-pavement noise were simultaneously collected on the number of asphalt section to evaluate the tire-pavement noise due to the pavement texture characteristics. A set of statistical analysis was performed to propose relationship between tire-pavement noise and MPD for asphalt concrete pavement.
PURPOSES : In this study, the pavement condition of non-mill-and-overlay and mill-and-overlay on deteriorated concrete pavement was compared. In addition, the suitable time to perform the initial overlay was investigated. METHODS : The condition of the pavement sections that were not additionally overlaid on non-mill-and-overlay or mill-and-overlay on deteriorated concrete pavements was investigated according to overlay pavement age. The condition of non-mill-and-overlay and mill-and-overlay sections of expressway route 25, which has more information on overlay history than other routes, was compared according to the number of times of overlay. The relation between the concrete pavement condition just before the overlay and the number of times of overlay was investigated for the non-mill-and-overlay and mill-and-overlay sections for which the first overlay was performed in the same year. RESULTS : The pavement condition of the non-mill-and-overlay sections was better than that of the mill-and-overlay sections, showing higher Highway Pavement Condition Index(HPCI) regardless of overlay pavement age. The number of reflection crackings of the non-mill-and-overlay sections was smaller than that of the mill-and-overlay sections. As a result of observing the cores obtained from the overlay sections, the proportion of the deteriorated non-mill-and-overlay sections was smaller than that of the mill-and-overlay sections. The SD measured just before the overlay on the concrete pavement for which additional overlay was not performed was smaller than that for which additional overlay was performed regardless of the milling of the concrete slab surface. The HPCI of the concrete pavement for which overlay was performed just once was higher than that for which overlay was performed more than one time. CONCLUSIONS : Accordingly, it was concluded that the condition of the non-mill-and-overlay sections was better than that of the mill-and-overlay sections. In addition, the better the condition of concrete pavement just before the initial overlay, the longer the duration of the overlay effect.
This study was carried out to select most efficient bonding methods of geogrid at the interface of old concrete pavement before placing asphalt overlay layer for reflection cracking retardation. Three bonding methods, a RSC-4 emulsified asphalt, a compound and an unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) were compared in this study. Three types of asphalt mixture (AC 60-80, RLDPE 8%, PG 76-22) and a dense-graded aggregate were used for overlay asphalt pavement. A reinforcing material which consists of a woven fabric underneath a glass fiber grid was used. An expedite test method which is for simulating mixed mode (mode I and II) fracture test was performed using a wheel tracker in laboratory. Cracking development by load repetition was measured as fatigue life (number of load cycle) and expansion of specimen body were measured for each test specimen. The results showed that UPR was the best and RSC-4 the next. But considering field applicability, RSC-4 was considered as an appropriate choice for bonding reinforcing material.
The primary objective of this research is to develop a rutting performance prediction model of flexible pavement. Extensive laboratory testings were conducted to achieve the objective. A new test method employing repetitive axial loading with confinement was also adopted to estimate the rutting performance of asphalt concrete in the research. The rutting prediction model employes a layer-strain theory. The required rutting coefficients for the prediction model were determined through the laboratory rutting characterizations of the asphalt concrete layer materials. Within the limits of this study, a laboratory rutting prediction model of flexible pavement using repetitive axial loading test was presented. It is noted that the developed rutting prediction model simulates propery the behaviors of flexible pavement layer materials.
