  • Micro nozzle is employed as a dynamic passive valve in micro fluidic devices. Micro nozzle array is used in micro droplet generation in bio-medical applications and propulsion device for actuating satellite and aerospace ship in vacuum environments. Aperture angle and the channel length of the micro nozzle affect its retification efficiency, and thus it is needed to produce micro nozzle precisely. MEMS process has a limit on making a micro nozzle with high-aspect ratio. Reactive ion etching process can make high-aspect ratio structure, but it is difficult to make the complex shape. Focused ion beam deposition has advantage in machining of three-dimensional complex structures of sub-micron size. Moreover, it is possible to monitor machining process and to correct defected part at simultaneously. In this study, focused ion beam deposition was applied to micro nozzle production.

  • In the current paper, the effects of initial slug design on the earring of an Al rectangular battery case manufactured by impact extrusion were studied. During impact extrusion, non-uniform metal flow between the long and the short sides of the battery case leads to earring, which is subsequently trimmed. Process parameters such as friction, aspect ratio of the battery case, the die shape and the forming temperature tend to induce earring because they cause greater non-uniform metal flow. Large aspect ratio of the battery case and high friction between slug and die can greatly affect the earring of a rectangular battery case. To make a rectangular battery case without earring, it is necessary to control metal flow uniformly during impact extrusion. One of the ways to reduce the earring is to control the metal flow of slug at the initial upsetting stage. To analyze the effects of the initial slug design on earring, FE analysis was conducted using DEFORM 3D. Two types of initial slug designs were evaluated where volume was removed along either the width or thickness directions. The results show that the initial slug design can be effective in adjusting the uniformity of metal flow.

  • In order to develop an integrated heat dissipating material and gas barrier film for electronics, new polymer was designed and synthesized for preparing composites containing hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) filler. Depending on the size and content of the hBN filler, both thermal conductivity and oxygen transmission rate can be adjusted. The composite achieved a high thermal conductivity of 28.0 W·m-1·K-1 at most and the oxygen transmission rate was decreased by 62% compared to that of the filler free matrix. Effective filler aspect ratios could be estimated by comparing thermal conductivity and oxygen transmission rate with values predicted by theoretical models. Discrepancy on the aspect ratios extracted from thermal conductivity and oxygen transmission rate comparisons was also discussed.

  • We investigate the flow characteristics around a series of rectangular bodies ($40^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$, $80^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$ and $160^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$) placed in a deep turbulent boundary layer. The study is aiming to understand the surface pressure distribution around the bodies such as the suction pressure in the leading edge, when the flow is normal, which is responsible for producing extreme suction pressures on the roof. The experiment includes wind tunnel work by using HWA (Hot-Wire anemometry) and pressure transducers. The experiments are carried out at three different Reynolds numbers, based on the velocity U at the body height h, of $2.4{\times}10^4$, $4.6{\times}10^4$ and $6.7{\times}10^4$, and large enough that the mean flow is effectively Reynolds number independent. The results include the measurements of the growth of the turbulent boundary layer in the wind tunnel and the surface pressure around the bodies.

  • This paper presents a new method of spacer assembly using anodic bonding method which is very simple and clean. The spacer having $100{\mu}m(W){\times}2.1{\mu}m(H)$ was bonded on amorphous silicon film of anode plate. Then, the vertical-type electrode was used for assembling of spacer in high voltage field emission display. In these results, we suggested that the vertical-type electrode provided spacer alignment for high aspect ratio and more simple batch process than conventional method.

  • An understanding of the cooling requirements of horticultural commodities begins with adequate knowledge of their biological responses. All fresh horticultural products are living organisms, carrying on the many biological processes that are essential to the maintenance of life. The pre-cooling is essential technique for the construction of cold chain system, which is necessary to maintain marketing quality of fresh produces during the transportation and distribution. The purpose of this study is to develop the pressure cooling tunnel using conveyer for the reduction of labor and improvement of pre-cooling efficiency. Performance of developed facility was tested for the strawberries, tomatoes and Chinese cabbages. Cooling ratio as a result of pre-cooling efficiency was 1.57, 1.56 and 1.32 for strawberries, tomatoes, and Chinese cabbages respectively. Cooling ratio decreased with increasing the distance of heat conduction from surface to center. The cooling ratio of Chinese cabbages was lower than that of fruit because of its head and leaf. In aspect of cooling uniformity, there was no significant difference of final temperature among inlet, outlet and middle layers of cold air in fresh produces. After pre-cooling treatment, quality changes were measured for the weight loss, Vit. C content, and titratable acidity. The quality of pre-cooling treatment was better than that of non-treatment and was kept on well during long-term storage.

  • In this study, we have investigated the effects of upstream rectangular winglet pair (RWP) on the heat/mass transfer coefficients in a dimple. Dimple print diameter was fixed at 20mm and the dimple depth was 4.0mm (0.4H). The dimple surface was coated with naphthalene for mass transfer experiment and the test plate was positioned at a rectangular straight duct whose aspect ratio (W/H) was 20. A rectangular winglet pair was positioned at y/d=-2.5. The RWP angle ($\beta$) was varied from $15^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. The Reynolds number, based on the duct height (H), was 5,000. with changing the RWP angle ($\beta$), the induced vortices had different flow characteristics; longitudinal or transversal vortices. These variation of induced vortices affected on the heat/mass transfer characteristics in the dimple.

  • Stress corrosion crack growth is simulated after assuming a small axial surface crack inside a S/G tube. Internal pressure and residual stresses are considered as applied forces. Stress intensity factors along crack front, variation of crack shape and crack growth rate are obtained and discussed. It is noticed that the aspect ratio of the crack is not depend on the initial crack shape but depend on the residual stress distribution.

  • Considering the importance of the detailed resolution of the reacting flow field inside a gasifier, the objective of this study lies on to investigate the effect of important variables to influence on the reacting flow and thereby to clarify the physical feature occurring inside the gasifier using a comprehensive gasifier computer program. Thus, in this study the gasification process of a 1.0 ton/day gasifier are numerically modeled using the Fluent code. And parametric investigation has been made in terms of swirl intensity and aspect ratio of the gasifier. Doing this, special attention is given on the detailed change of the reacting flow field inside a gasifier especially with the change of this kind of design and operation parameters. Based on this study, a number of useful conclusions can be drawn in the view of flow pattern inside gasifier together with the consequence of the gasification process caused by the change of the flow pattern. Especially, swirl effect gives rise to a feature of a central delayed recirculation zone, which is different from the typical strong central recirculation appeared near the inlet nozzle. The delayed feature of central recirculation appearance could be explained by the increased axial momentum due to the substantial amount of the presence of the coal slurry occupying over the entire gasifier in gasification process. Further, the changes of flow pattern are explained in detail with the gasifier aspect ratio. In general, the results obtained are physically acceptable in parametric study.
