In this paper, we investigate the performance of anomaly factors in Asia-Pacific Stock market and show the higher Sharpe ratio of the volatility managed smart beta portfolio. The smart beta portfolio combines the benefit of passive strategy and active strategy. However, the smart beta portfolios are seems to be exposed to the risk of anomaly factors from the perspective of traditional financial equilibrium model. Therefore, the smart beta strategy may generate negatively skewed returns unappealing to investors having lower risk tolerance. Our empirical investigations find that the return of the Asia-Pacific region stock market is more volatile than other regions with the lower efficiency ratio. However, the value factor and the momentum factor of Asia-Pacific region both show good performances. More interestingly, we also find that managing the volatility of the momentum factor in Asia-Pacific stock market almost doubles the efficiency ratio.

The paper investigates linkages between the Korea stock market and each of the major Asia-Pacific stock markets, namely those of the Japan, China, Australia, New-Zealand, We employs the Johansen technique to test for pairwise cointergration between the Korea stock market and each of the major Asia-Pacific stock markets. The major stock indices of the markets are used, from 1 September 2006 to 31 August 2010. The results from the test implies that the Korea market is not cointergrated with any of the major Asia-Pacific markets during the period. Our study implies that there are no long-run linkages between the Korea and any of the major Asia-Pacific stock markets.
Purpose - We investigate how to increase consumer incentives to buy public offering funds, resulting in activating the public offering fund market. In particular, this study aims to find ways to expand diversity and to improve efficiency of public offering fund. The public fund market of Korea has been stagnant in recent years. However, the public offering fund market plays a very significant role in terms of consumer welfare. Since only a few wealthy investors can participate in the private equity market, the stagnation in the public offering fund market usually reduces the opportunity of consumer's buying funds thus ultimately affecting their future wealth. Research design, data, and methodology - To attain our purpose, the 'factor-based portfolio strategy' has been considered. It is an alternative portfolio strategy, which composites the advantages of the passive management and active management. For our empirical anaylsis, we used global stock distribution market data over the period of 1991 and 2016. Then we constructed portfolios based on firm-size, firm-value, and momentum. Finally, a regression model was set, then hypotheses were tested, analyzing the performances. Results - First, among the 15 factor-based portfolios of global, Europe, Asia-Pacific(ex Japan), US and Japan, in eight portfolios, positive excess returns are observed at 5% significance level. Further, there is another portfolio with positive excess return at 10% significance level. Second, most of the portfolios with significant excess performance show positive relationship with the market portfolio. However, the firm-value based portfolio in Asia-Pacific region shows no relationship, and the firm-value based portfolio in US shows negative relationship. Third, we confirmed that the two firm-value factor portfolios in Asia-Pacific region and US, not having positive relationship with market portfolio, provide significant excess returns. Conclusions - In this paper, we provide empirical evidences supporting that the factor-based portfolios expand the diversity of funds and improve the efficiency of investment performance. However, there is no guarantee that the efficiency will continue in the future. In addition, various constraints and costs must be considered. Nevertheless, our novel findings in the advanced financial market such as US and Asia-Pacific are very interesting and offers important implications.
We use a data-mining bootstrap procedure to investigate the predictability test in the eight Asia-Pacific regional stock markets using in-sample and out-of-sample forecasting models. We address ourselves to the data-mining bias issues by using the data-mining bootstrap procedure proposed by Inoue and Kilian and applied to the US stock market data by Rapach and Wohar. The empirical findings show that stock returns are predictable not only in-sample but out-of-sample in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Korea with a few exceptions for some forecasting horizons. However, we find some significant disparity between in-sample and out-of-sample predictability in the Korean stock market. For Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore, stock returns have predictable components both in-sample and out-of-sample. For the US, Australia, and Canada, we do not find any evidence of return predictability in-sample and out-of-sample with a few exceptions. For Japan, stock returns have a predictable component with price-earnings ratio as a forecasting variable for some out-of-sample forecasting horizons.
This research aims to examine the predictive power of multiple online stock message boards, namely, NAVER Finance and PAXNET, which are the most popular stock message boards in South Korea, in stock market activities. If predictive power exists, we then compare the predictive power of multiple online stock message boards. To accomplish the research purpose, we constructed a panel data set with close price, volatility, Spell out acronyms at first mention.PER, and number of posts in 40 companies in three months, and conducted a panel vector auto-regression analysis. The analysis results showed that the number of posts could predict stock market activities. In NAVER Finance, previous number of posts positively influenced volatility on the day. In PAXNET, previous number of posts positively influenced close price, volatility, and PER on the day. Second, we confirmed a difference in the prediction power for stock market activities between multiple online stock message boards. This research is limited by the fact that it only considered 40 companies and three stock market activities. Nevertheless, we found correlation between online stock message board and stock market activities and provided practical implications. We suggest that investors need to focus on specific online message boards to find interesting stock market activities.
Purpose - This study investigates the performance of investment strategies incorporating estimated stock market cycle based on a lead-lag relationship between business cycle and stock market cycle, thereby deriving empirical implications on risk management. Design/methodology/approach - The data period ranges from June 1953 to September 2022 and de-trended short rate, term spread, credit spread, stock market volatility are considered as major input variables to estimate business cycle and stock market cycle by applying probit model. Based on the estimated stock market cycle, two types of strategies are constructed and their performance relative to the benchmark is empirically examined. Findings Two types of strategies based on stock market cycle are considered: The first strategy is to long(short) on stocks when stock market stage is expected to be an expansion(a recession), and the second one is to long on stocks(bonds) when expecting an expansion(a recession). The empirical results show that the strategies based on stock market cycle outperforms a simple buy and hold strategy in both in-sample and out-of-sample investigation. Also the out-of-sample evidence suggests that the second strategy which is in line with asset allocation is more profitable than the first one. Research implications or Originality The strategies considered in this study are based on the estimated stock market cycle which only depends on a few easily available financial variables, thereby making easier to establish such a strategy. It implies that investors enhance investment performance by constructing a relatively simple trading strategies if they set their position on stocks or choose which asset class to buy conditioning on stock market cycle.
Purpose - This study examines whether internal control has an effect on stock price informativeness about future earnings. High quality internal control provides continuous assurance for the quality of financial reports, and these future earnings-related information is accurately reflected in the current stock price. Design/methodology/approach - This study collected 12,862 data from 2006 to 2021 in China to make an empirical analysis using the future earnings response coefficient (FERC) and the multiple regression analysis were hired in order to analyze the data. Findings - We find that internal control strengthens the association between current returns and future earnings, indicating that more information about future earnings is reflected in current stock prices. This positive effect exists in both the main board market and the growth enterprise market of China's stock market, especially in the main board market after the implementation of the internal control policy. In addition, we find that the positive effect is weaker for firms that report internal control deficiencies or receives non unqualified internal control audit opinions. The results using earnings persistence yield similar findings, further supporting the results based on the FERC model. Research Implications or Originality - Our tests provide strong evidence that the quality of internal control affects FERC in China stock market.
Purpose - This paper aims to analyze the relationship and correlation between the stock markets of Korea, the US, China, and Japan before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. Design/methodology/approach - This study conducted an empirical analysis using the stock market data from January 2016 to June 2023 for the representative market indices of Korea, the US, China, and Japan. The analysis employed the VAR model, Granger causality test, impulse response function, and variance decomposition. Findings - Analyzing the relationships of these stock markets before and after the outbreak of COVID-19, we obtained the following results. (i) The influence of the U.S. stock market was found to be absolute regardless of the COVID-19 period, and the rise in the U.S. stock market led to rises in other stock markets. (ii) The Chinese stock market had a significant negative impact on the U.S., Korean, and Japanese stock markets before COVID-19, but this influence disappeared after COVID-19. This suggests that the Chinese market exhibited unique characteristics different from the global market after COVID-19. (iii) Analyzing the period excluding the first quarter of 2020, when global stock market volatility was extremely high due to the spread of COVID-19, we found that the results were very similar to the analysis including the first quarter of 2020. Therefore, it is difficult to argue that the increased uncertainty during this period distorted the relationships among the stock markets of these four countries. Research implications or Originality - We anticipate that these findings will offer valuable insights for both individual and institutional investors, aiding them in portfolio diversification and risk mitigation.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine whether the change of settlement procedures have an impact on the distribution of day of the week effect in the UK and French markets or not. U.K and France changed their systems from fixed settlement date systems to fixed settlement lag systems Design/methodology/approach - This study adopted the data of the specific stock market indices such as FTSE 100 in the U.K market and FRCAC 40 in the French market, This study constructs a test of the differences in mean returns across the days of the week by computing the regression equations for each country index. Findings - First, this study found that the evolving settlement procedures in stock exchanges have an effect on stock return of day of the week. Second, long-run improvements in market efficiency may have diminished the effects of certain anomalies in recent periods. Improvements in market efficiency and evolving settlement systems may cause the disappearance of the weekend effect. Research implications or Originality - The Implication of this study is that recent settlement systems contributed to the disappearance of the weekend effect and explains improvements in market efficiency and diminishments of market anomaly. This study may be the first study which examines whether evolving settlement systems have an effect on the disappearance of the weekend effect in the market or not.
If a firm announces an investment in IT security, how the market value of its competitors reacts to the announcement? We try to shed light on this question through an event study design. To test the relationship, we collected 143 announcements on cybersecurity investment and measured the subsequent impact on 533 competitors' abnormal returns, spanning from 2000 to 2019. Our estimation results present that, on average, the announcements have no observable impact on the market value of announcing firms and competitors as well, which is consistent with findings of a prior study. Interestingly, however, the impact becomes evident when we classify our samples by industries (Finance vs. non-Finance or ICT vs. non-ICT) and firm size (Big vs. Small). We interpret our empirical findings through the lenses of contagion effect and competition effect between announcing firms and their competitors. Key finding of our study is that, for financial service firms, the effect resulting from the announcement on cybersecurity investment transfers to competitors in the same direction (i.e., contagion effect).
