Differences in Incidence, Mortality and Survival of Breast Cancer by Regions and Countries in Asia and Contributing Factors

  • Although the incidence of breast cancer in Asia remains lower than in North America, Western Europe, and Oceania, rates have been increasing rapidly during the past few decades, and Asian countries now account for 40% of breast cancer cases diagnosed worldwide. Breast cancer mortality has also increased among Asian women, in contrast to decreased mortality in Northern America, Western Europe, and Oceania. These increased rates are associated with higher prevalence of breast cancer risk factors (e.g., reduced parity, delayed childbirth, increased obesity) that have accompanied economic development throughout the region. However, Asian regions (western, south-central, south-eastern, and eastern) and countries differ in the types and magnitude of changes in breast cancer risk factors, and cannot be viewed as a single homogeneous group. The objective of this paper was to contrast the heterogeneous epidemiology of breast cancer by Asian regions and countries, and to suggest potential avenues for future research.

Analysis of genetic diversity and population structure of rice cultivars from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and Oceania using SSR markers

  • In this study, 29 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used to analyze the genetic diversity and population structure of 125 rice accessions from 40 different origins in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and Oceania. A total of 333 alleles were detected, with an average of 11.5 per locus. The mean values of major allele frequency, expected heterozygosity, and polymorphism information content (PIC) for each SSR locus were 0.39, 0.73, and 0.70, respectively. The highest mean PIC was 0.71 for Asia, followed by 0.66 for Africa, 0.59 for South America, 0.53 for Europe, and 0.47 for Oceania. Model-based structure analysis revealed the presence of five subpopulations, which was basically consistent with clustering based on genetic distance. Some accessions were clearly assigned to a single population in which >70% of their inferred ancestry was derived from one of the model-based populations. In addition, 12 accessions (9.6%) were categorized as having admixed ancestry. The results could be used to understanding the genetic structure of rice cultivars from these regions and to support effective breeding programs to broaden the genetic basis of rice varieties.

Intercontinental comparison of caustic ingestion in children

  • Purpose: To investigate the caustic ingestion in children among different continents according to demographic characteristics (core purpose), main symptoms, common caustic agents, signs and symptoms, management, treatment and complications. Methods: This systematic review was performed by searching the databases Science Direct, ProQuest, Google Scholar, and PubMed, electronically and manually. We included studies that were published from 1980 to 2013, at University of Medical Sciences of Tabriz, Iran. A strategic search was performed with keywords including caustic, corrosive, ingestion and children, and was limited to articles in English and Persian. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS ver. 18. Results: Of 63 selected articles of caustic ingestion with 9,888 samples, the proportion of Africa was 3 articles (4.8%) and 95 samples (1%), America 9 articles (14.3%) and 305 sample (3%), Asia 29 articles (46%) and 2,780 samples (28.1%), Europe 17 articles (27%) and 3,002 samples (30.4%), and Oceania 5 articles (7.9%) and 3,706 samples (37.5%). The average age was in the Africa $3.07{\pm}2.02years$, America $3.17{\pm}1.83years$, Asia $3.34{\pm}1.58years$, Europe $3.58{\pm}2.09years$ and Oceania $3.52{\pm}2.02years$. Sex distribution was in Africa 76 males (0.91%) and 19 females (0.23%), America 49 males (0.58%) and 41 females (0.49%), Asia 1,575 males (18.76%) and 1,087 females (12.95%), Europe 1,018 males (12.13%) and 823 females (9.8%), and Oceania 1,918 males (22.85%) and 1,788 females (21.3%). Statistical analysis of the data indicated higher consumption in Europe and Oceania in the boys with higher average age of years. Conclusion: The comparison of caustic ingestion indicated that the cause substances of caustic ingestion in children are different among continents, therefore prevention strategy and different treatment guidelines among continents will be needed.

Expanding Responsibilities for Medical Physics in Asia-Oceania and its Essential International Links: The Twin Role of AFOMP and IOMP

  • The objectives of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) are to organize international cooperation in medical physics, to contribute to the advancement of medical physics in all its aspects, especially in developing countries; and to encourage and advise on the formation of national organizations of medical physics in those countries that lack such organizations. The objectives of the Asian-Oceania Federation of Medical Physics (AFOMP) are to advance medical physics in our geographic region, especially in those countries that do not yet have national organizations of medical physics. We must focus on the development of AFOMP in science, professional relations, education and training in our geographic areas and to seek funding and support from the IOMP for these activities. Since its formation in 2000, the Asian-Oceania Federation of Medical Physics (AFOMP) has been participating actively in IOMP. Our goal now should be to gain more influence by placing members on various committees of IOMP as well as preparing members for leadership roles at the upper levels. AFOMP is already on the world map of medical physics with the upcoming two world congresses - Sydney and Seoul.

아시아.태평양국가(太平洋國家)의 정보정책(情報政策) (National Information Policy in Asia and Oceania)

  • 제11차(第11次) 국제문헌정보연맹(國際文獻情報聯盟/아시아 태평양위원회(太平洋委員會) 총회(總會)(FID/CAO)가 1990년 10월 29일부터 11월 1일까지 산업기술정보(産業技術情報)센터의 주관하에 서울에서 개최(開催)되었다. 총회(總會)의 주제(主題)는 국가정보정책(國家情報政策)이었으며, 이때 발표(發表)된 호주(濠洲), 인도네시아, 일본(日本), 말레이지아, 중국(中國), 타일랜드, 소련(蘇聯) 등 7 개국(個國)의 국가보고서(國家報告書)를 요약하였다. 국가(國家)마다 정보정책(情報政策)의 내용(內容)이나 정보(情報)시스템의 구조(構造)는 다소 차이가 있지만 주요목표(主要目標)는 유사한 것이었다. 정부(政府)는 국가정보정책(國家情報政策)을 수립(樹立)하고 정보관련기관(情報關聯機關)들의 협력(協力) 아래 정보정책(情報政策)의 실현을 보장해야 할 것이다.

광양항 컨테이너물동량의 구조적 변화추이분석 (Analysis of Structural Changes in Container Volume of Gwangyang Port)

  • 본 연구는 광양항의 컨테이너 물동량의 변화구조를 분석하기 위하여 국내 컨테이너 항만과의 변이할당분석을 통해 기간별, 노선별 비교분석을 실시하였다. 광양항의 컨테이너 물동량 절대물동량 성장분석 결과 기간별, 항로별 가장 높은 성장치를 보여준 기간 및 항로는 2001-2007년 유럽, 북미주, 중동, 남미등이었다. 이어 2008-2012년 기간 동안 동남아이사, 대양주, 극동아시아, 유럽, 일본 등이었다. 2018년에서 2022년 구간 중에서는 대양주, 서남아시아 정도이다. 향후 광양항의 컨테이너 물동량 확보를 위해서는 유럽 및 미주, 아프리카 지역의 노선확보가 필수적이며 부두운영사의 경영 및 서비스 개선을 통한 항만경쟁력 확보가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

아시아-오세아니아 지역의 MODIS 지면피복분류 개선 (Improvement of MODIS land cover classification over the Asia-Oceania region)

  • 본 연구에서는 MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 지면피복 분류자료(MCD12Q1)에서 분류오류로 판단되는 화소들을 재분류함으로써 분류 정확도를 개선하였다. 최근 12년(2001-2012)간의 MODIS 지면피복 분류자료에서 지면피복 유형이 3개 이상으로 분류된 화소는 분류상에 오류가 있다고 판단하여 지면피복 재분류 화소로 선정하였다. 지면피복 재분류를 위해 공간해상도는 1 km이고 시간주기는 8일인 MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) 자료를 이용하였다. NDVI 자료 중 구름 등으로 오염된 화소를 보정하기 위해 시 공간 연속성을 이용한 보정기법인 Correction based on Spatial and Temporal Continuity (CSaTC) 기법을 이용하였다. 보정된 NDVI 자료를 1개월 주기로 합성한 후 분류 오류로 판단된 화소들에 대해 Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis (ISODATA) 기법으로 군집화를 수행하였다. 각 군집별 식생 계절변동 특성을 고려하여 지면피복을 분류한 후 정상으로 판정된 MODIS 지면피복과 합성하여 최종 지면피복 재분류 자료를 산출하였다. 분류 정확도는 GPS를 이용한 현장관측 자료와 유럽우주국의 지상검증참조자료 등 총 138개 지상 관측자료를 이용하여 검증을 수행하였다. 2012년 MODIS 지면피복 분류자료의 정확도는 약 68%이었으나 본 연구에서 재분류한 지면피복자료의 정확도는 약 74%로 나타나 일부 화소들에서 분류 정확도가 개선되었다.

아시아지역 도서관계의 국제교류 (International Cooperation of Libraries and Librarians in Asia)

  • This study is composed of two parts, The one is a description of the establishment, organization, activities and an evaluation of the four international organizations of Asian libraries and librarians: Asian Federation of Library Associations(AFLA), Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL), Conference of Directors of National Libraries of Asia and Oceania(CDNLAO) and Association of Parliamentary Librarians of Asia and the Pacific(APLAP). The other is an investigation of status quo of the mutual exchange in librarianship between Korea, China and Japan. It is suggested that some ways toward active participation in the international cooperative systems between Asian libraries and librarians be explored.
