  • Importance: Sheep and goat pox (SGP) virus infection is a highly fatal viral infection of small ruminants that causes major production losses in sheep and goats in Ethiopia while also limiting international trade. Objective: This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of SGP infection and assess related risk variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February to August 2023 on 384 serum samples taken from sheep and goats. A serum neutralization test was conducted to detect the presence of antibodies against the SGP virus in Wolaita Sodo Regional Laboratory. Results: The overall seroprevalence rate of SGP was 4.95%. Factors such as sheep (8.26%), female sheep and goats (7.45%), older sheep and goats (8.33%), larger flock size of sheep and goats (10.47%), poorly conditioned sheep and goats (31.58%), sheep and goats with a tick on their skin (10.38%), and animals that had not been vaccinated (5.17%) were found to have higher seroprevalence. Furthermore, the seropositivity in sheep was five times greater than in goats (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 4.73; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39-15.99). Additionally, large-sized flocks of sheep and goats were more likely to be seropositive to pox disease than small-sized flocks (AOR, 6.73; 95% CI, 1.58-28.67). Conclusions and Relevance: Thus, the study revealed the prevalence of SGP in the Wolaita zone. Additional research should be conducted to estimate the extent of the disease at the regional level, and management measures should be implemented to reduce the economic losses associated with this condition.

  • Many XML applications use XPath Patterns as a query language for XML documents. Two XPath patterns may have containment relationship, and the containment problem between two XPath patterns is a problem that determines whether one XPath pattern contains another XPath Pattern. Although the containment problem occurs in many applications, it is known as a co-NP complete. A homomorphism problem, which is a sufficient condition for the containment problem, is solved in polynomial time. We first discuss applications that replace the containment problem with the homomorphism problem, and maintaining homomorphism information among XPath patterns will benefit those applications. Then, we propose a lattice structure, called POX (Partially Ordered Set of XPath Patterns), and develop algorithms for maintaining it. As our analyses show, the algorithms can efficiently maintain POX in polynomial time.

  • Laccase activity of Pleurotus ostreatus is significantly increased by the addition of apple pomace. Among various conditions, the best concentration of apple pomace and cultivation time for the production of laccase by P. ostreatus was 2.5% and 9 days, respectively. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analyses of laccase isoenzyme genes, including pox1, pox3, pox4, poxc, poxa3, and poxa1b, revealed a clear effect of apple pomace on transcription induction. Our findings reveal that the use of apple pomace can be a model for the valuable addition of similar wastes and for the development of a solid-state fermenter and commercial production of oyster mushroom P. ostreatus.

  • The antioxidant enzyme and DPPH radical scavenging activity with variations in drying methods of diploid and tetraploid in Platycodon grandiflorum were determined. Antioxidant enzyme activities were measured as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). The roots of Platycodon grandiflorum were freeze-dried, indoor-dried, hot-air dried, and microwave dried. The root extract of P. grandiflorum have shown the highest SOD enzyme activity of 92% in tetraploid of freeze-dried and indoor-dried while diploid of microwave dried showed the lowest SOD enzyme activity of 47.5%. The activity of CAT showed higher values in the root of tetraploid than in the diploid of P. grandiflorum in all drying methods. The APX activity showed relatively higher values in the root extract of freeze-dried both the diploid and tetraploid, but the difference in comparison with other extracts was not significant. The POX activities according to drying methods of diploid and tetraploid in P. grandiflorum showed relatively high values in freeze-dried and indoor-dried compared with other drying methods, and the POX activity between the diploid and tetraploid was not significant difference in each drying method. The DPPH radical scavenging activity with variation in drying methods of diploid and tetraploid in P. grandiflorum was the highest in the freeze-dried, and was higher in tetraploid than diploid in all the concentrations. In conclusion, the root of P. grandiflorum had the potent biological activities in both diploid and tetraploid. In particular, the tetraploid root of P. grandiflorum showing high antioxidant enzyme activity could be good materials for development of source of functional healthy food.

  • The Varicella zoster virus is responsible for two common infectious diseases: chicken pox(Varicella) and shingles(Herpes zoster). Chicken pox is the primary infection. After the initial infection, the virus remains dormant in sensory ganglia until reactivation may occur decades later. The subsequent reactivation is Herpes zoster. Herpes zoster of the trigeminal nerve distribution manifests as painful, vesicle eruptions of the skin and mucosa innervated by the affected nerve. Oral vesicles usually appear after the skin manifestrations. Reports of osteomyelitis of jaw after trigeminal herpes zoster are extremely rare. We report a case of osteomyelitis on mandible caused by herpes zoster infection which was treated by antiviral drug, curettage. At 1 year post-operatively, mandibular mucosa had healed without recurrent sign. But post-herpetic neuralgia is remained.

  • This experiment was conducted on the fowl pox embryo vaccine for the production immunity, and stability, using an attenuated fowl pox virus (Nakano strin). Burnet's window method was applied, that is, 0.1 ml. of seed virus was inoculated on the chorioallantoic membrane of 12-day old chicken embryos, and incubated for 5 to 6 day, and then the result were read. Four kinds of suspensions of different embyo tissue were prepared and tested for the infectivity in chickens. Finally the suspension of chorioallantoic membrane was used as the vaccine throughout the experiment. Results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows: (1) Of embryo tissue infected with the vaccine virus, chorioallantoic membrane had the highest virus titer of $10^{-5.4}$ $EID_{50}$, and albumen the lowest titer of $10^{-0.7}$ $EID_{50}$. (2) Suspensions of infected whole embryo with or without saline, and de-embryonated whole egg had about the same virus titer of $10^{-4.4}$ $EID_{50}$, whereas the chorioallantoic membrane had $10^{-5.7}$ EID 50 or higher. The virus titer droped one log from $EID_{50}$ when inoculated into chickens. Takes were observed 35.6% of 500 chickens by stick method and 89% of 500 chickens by brush method. (3) The chorioallantoic membrane conferred almost perfect immunity for chickens by 10 days after vaccination. (4) Satisfactory immunity was observed in the chickens when eruption in a single follicle. (5) Eight of 10 vaccinated chickens revealed durable immunity for 307 days following vaccination. (6) The vacuum-dried vaccine maintained its infectiviy for 899 days at $5^{\circ}C$ or below and maintained the vius titer of $10^{-3.6}$ $EID_{50}$. On the other hand, non-desiccated wet vaccine maintained the titer of $10^{-3.0}$ $EID_{50}$ for 50 days of preservation period at $5^{\circ}$. However, in 50% glycerin-saline the infectivtiy of the same wet vaccine dropped to $10^{-1.5}$ $EID_{50}$ (7) The vartation of virus titer of the vaccine before and after desiccation was $10^{-0.5}$ $EID_{50}$ on the average. (8) As suspending media, 0.85 per cent saline and distilled water showed nearly the same effect on the infectivity of the vaccine by retaining the titer $10^{-3.0}$ $EID_{50}$ after 50 days of preservation both at $5^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, while 50 percent cent glycerine-saline dropped the titer to $10^{-2.5}$ EID and $10^{-1.5}$ $EID_{50}$ respectively at $5^{\circ}C$ and $2^{\circ}C$ after the same period.

  • The application of fungicides is indispensable to global food security, and their use has increased in recent times. Fungicides, directly or indirectly, have impacted insects, leading to genetic and molecular-level changes. Various detoxification mechanisms allow insects to eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROS) toxicity induced by agrochemicals including fungicides. In the present study, we analyzed the mRNA expression levels of detoxifying enzymes in Tenebrio molitor larvae following exposure to non-lethal doses (0.2, 2, and 20 ㎍/µL) of a fungicide captan. Transcripts of peroxidases (POXs), catalases (CATs), superoxide dismutases (SODs), and glutathione-s-transferases (GSTs) were screened from the T. molitor transcriptome database. RT-qPCR analysis showed that TmPOX5 mRNA increased significantly 24 h post-captan exposure. A similar increase was noticed for TmSOD4 mRNA 3 h post-captan exposure. Moreover, the expression of TmCAT2 mRNA increased significantly 24 h post-treatment with 2 ㎍/µL captan. TmGST1 and TmGST3 mRNA expression also increased noticeably after captan exposure. Taken together, these results suggest that TmPOX5 and TmSOD4 mRNA can be used as biomarkers or xenobiotics sensors for captan exposure in T. molitor, while other detoxifying enzymes showed differential expression.
