  • The authors investigated the artistic characteristics of autistic savant artists, hypotheses on the proximate and ultimate causes of their emergence, recent psychological and other studies about them, and psychological and neuroaesthetic studies about non-savant autistic individuals. The artistic features of autistic savant artists were significantly similar to those of outsider artists. Furthermore, the authors investigated the explanatory power of the paradoxical functional facilitation theory, the superior visual perception hypothesis, the "Hmmmmm" hypothesis, and the Neanderthal theory of autism regarding the emergence of autistic savant artists. In addition, we investigated whether an increase in savant characteristics was related to a decrease in the ability for social communication. The authors suggested that in studies on the aesthetic experience of non-savant autistic individuals, their aesthetic experience ability is never lower than that of neurotypical individuals and that some non-savant autistic individuals may potentially have artistic talent. Finally, the authors reviewed the effectiveness of the "autism savant spectrum syndromic disorder" proposed by some researchers. More scientific and systematic studies on autistic savant artists from a multidisciplinary perspective are warranted.

  • The article seeks to explore Ukrainian media art and its features in a global context. In particular, it performs an in-depth analysis of the stages of its development from video art of the 1990s, media installations of the 2000s, and to various digital and VR technologies today. Due to historical circumstances, the development of media art was quite rapid, as young artists sought to gain new experience in media art. Most often, their experience was broadened through international cooperation and studying abroad. The paper analyzes the presentation of Ukrainian media art outside the country during 1993-2020 and distinguishes the main thematic areas of the artists' work. It examines how artists present and reveal the peculiarities of the Ukrainian worldview, aesthetics, and culture through the problematization of certain aspects and themes in their work. Specifically, among the principal topics which are problematized in the work of media artists are a sensory experience, limited sensory capabilities, gender issues, the Chernobyl tragedy, the development of utopian models of the city, and global communication. The leading themes of Ukrainian artists also include revolution and war. Notably, political and social sentiments determine the unique energy and vitality of contemporary Ukrainian art, create a revolutionary creative environment, and unite media artists in group art projects. It is concluded that by showing, exhibiting, and presenting them outside the country, artists shape the image of Ukrainian art in a global context.

  • This study aims to understand the process of valuing contemporary artworks by young and emerging artists via online art platforms. This paper conceptualizes Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital, which theoretically guides us for conducting a case study of Saatchi Art. This article mainly collected data by interviewing seven Korean artists who were selected by our case with the supplement information carried out direct observation and document reviews. By analyzing the gathered data, the key finding of this research is that the selection of artists in Saatchi Art's curatorial program implicitly admits and guarantees the value of their artworks. By doing so, it contributes to building symbolic capital for the selected artists. This article also contends that such construction of the artists' symbolic capital results from the accumulated symbolic capitals of the founder and curator of the online platform. The theoretical contribution of this paper is to expand previous research on valuing artworks in the offline art world into the online one.

  • This paper examines a number of Korean artists-Whanki Kim, Po Kim, Byungki Kim, Lim Choong-Sup, Min Byung-Ok and etc-working in New York in the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on their motivations to head for the U.S. and their life and activity in the newly-emerged city of international art. The thesis was conceived based upon the fact that New York has been one of the major venues for Korean artists in which to live, study, travel and stay after the Korean War. Moreover, the United States, since 1945, has had a tremendous influence upon Korea politically, socially, economically, and, above all, culturally. This study is divided into three major sections. The first one attends to the reasons that these artists moved out of Korea while including in this discussion, the long-standing yearning of the Korean intelligentsia to experience more modernized cultures, and American postwar cultural policies that stimulated them to envision life beyond their national parameters, in a country heavily entrenched in Cold War ideology. The second part examines these artists' pursuit of abstraction in New York where it was already losing its avant-garde status as opposed to the style's cutting edge cache in Korea. While their turn to abstraction was outdated from New York's critical perspective, it was seen to be de rigueur for Koreans that had developed through phases from Art Informel in the 1960s to Dansaekhwa (monochromatic paintings) in the 1970s. The third part focuses on the artists' struggle while caught between a dualistic framework such as Korea/U.S, East/West, center/margin, traditional/modern, and abstraction/figuration. Despite such dichotomic frames, they identified abstract art as the epitome of pure, absolute art, which revealed their beliefs inherited from western modernism during the colonial period before 1910-1945. In fact, their reality as immigrants in America put them in a diasporic space where they oscillated between the fixed, essentialist Korean identity and the floating, transforming identity as international artists in New York or Korean-American artists. Thus their abstract and semi-abstract art reflect the in-between identity from the diasporic space while demonstrating their yearning for a land of political freedom, intellectual fulfillment and the continuity of modern art's legacy imposed upon them over the course of Korea's tumultuous history in the twentieth century and making the artists as precursor of transnational, transcultural art of the global age in the twenty-first century.

  • Minimalism describes various movements in art and design, which flourished mainly in the USA in the 1960s. Its popularity, however, was cut short by post-modernism. In the mid-1990s, minimalism was given a second breath of life and became culturally popular, especially in areas such as design and art the minimalist movement launched some trends that supplanted post-modernism and whose influences still cast a heavy shadow on society today. From this point of view, in analyzing the form and characteristics of the artists and their work from the 1960s, which were the first generation of the minimalist furniture designers, it is necessary to understand and analyze contemporary artists and their art. In this study, four American minimal artists in the furniture design field, Donald Judd, Richard Tuttle, Scott Burton, and Richard Artschwager were studied along with their works. The results show the three distinct characteristics of minimalist furniture design featuring strict and simple geometric shapes: the form, which was influenced by early modernism variety and origin, which are formative of the materials and the way they are used as influenced by surrealism and a new concept of art such as aesthetics for the little things, which echoes influences of Dadaism, and especially of earlier artists such as Marcel Duchamp.

  • This paper empirically investigated the factors that may affect art forgery, using 5,130 authentication request data drawn from Korean Art Appraisal Board (KAAB) during 2003 and 2012. Living status of artists and trade frequency of artworks of the artists were considered as explanatory variables that may affect authentication requests and forgery ratio. We found that artists' death has significantly positive impacts on both authentication requests and forgery ratio, while trade frequency of artworks of the artists has the impact only on authentication requests. These results imply that art forgery may have multidimensional characteristics.

  • This paper aims to understand the agents which have an impact upon artists' career development. By critically exploring previous research, this article conceptualizes the roles of intermediaries such as art schools, galleries, critics, and collectors in influencing the careers for artists. The qualitative case study is conducted by selecting KAWS as an intrinsic case. This study collects secondary data about the career trajectory of KAWS by various sources, which are analyzed according to the conceptual framework. The outcome of this research clarifies previous research from a sociological point of view in which highlights the significant importance of the art world's gallery, critics, media and collectors in developing the artist's career. In this paper, more importantly, the public attention to artists is construed as one of the agents influencing the career development of artists.

  • The purposes of the study were to investigate the participation of artists in paper circuit computing learning and to conduct an in-depth study on the formation and development of practical knowledge. To do this, we selected as research participants six artists who participated in the learning program of an art museum, and used various methods such as pre-open questionnaires, participation observation, and individual interviews to collect data. The collected data were analyzed based on community of practice theory. Results showed that the artists participated in the learning based on a desire to use new technology or find a new work production method for interacting with their audiences. In addition, the artists actively formed practical knowledge in the curriculum and tried to apply paper circuit computing to their works. To continuously develop the research, participants formed a study group or set up a practical goal through planned exhibitions. The results of this study can provide implications for practical approaches to, and utilization of, paper circuit computing.

  • In this paper, we design and implement a contest application that enables artists to participate in contest activities, manpower, and job information using smart-phone, and to share and systematically manage the information. While the competition is very important for the artists, it is not easy for them to search the competition information due to lack of time. Therefore, it is effective to provide them with contest information suitable for their interests and to be more immersed in creative activities by sharing them. The core function is to provide a space where artists can share contests in real time through the contest bulletin board and aims to provide a variety of functions for convenient convenience, such as buying and selling of works by artists and spoon market for purchasing materials and art tools do.

  • This study analyzes the policy-making process to promote the artists' welfare. In the problems stream, the artists have been found to suffer without any governmental support. In the policy stream, there have been various alternatives but they were not actualized. Meanwhile, a writer died of illness and famine in 2011. In the political stream, the public opinion to require the promotion of the artists' welfare, was strengthened. It made the policy-window open and resulted in the legislation of the Artists Welfare Law. Based upon these analyses, this article concludes that Kingdon's model is applicable to this case. Especially, this study shows that this policy was made with accidental events and the roles of informal participants such as netizen were more critical. However, it should be noted that the content of this Law was modified and trimmed because there was no policy entrepreneur to persuade the dissenters. It could made the policy-making process of this Law distinguished from others.
