In recent years, there has been an increasing intest in control of active automotive suspension systems with a goal of improving the ride comfort and safety. Many approaches for these purposes have used linearized models of the suspension's dynamics, allowing the use of linear control theory. However, the linearized model does not well descriibe the actual system behavior which is inherently nonlinear. The object of this study is to develop a neuro controlled active suspension for the ride quality improvement. After obtaining active control law using optimal control theory, we use the artificial neural network to train the neuro controller to learn the relation of road input and control force. Form the numerical results, we found that back propagation learning does show good pattern matching and vertical acceleration of the driver's seat and sprung mass.

In the paper, we have proposed a new technique to detemine the initial billet for the forged products using a function approximation in neural network. A three-layer neural network is used and a back propagation algorithm is employed totrain the network. An optimal billet which satisfied the forming limitation, minimum of incomplete filling in the die cavity, load and energyas well as more uniform distribution of effective strain, is determined by applying the ability of function approximation of te neural network. The amount of incomplete filling in the die, load and forming energyas well as effective strain are measured by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The new technique is applied tofind the optimal billet size for the axisymmetric rib-web product in hot forging. This would reduce the number of finite element simulation for determing the optimal billet of forging products, further it is usefully adapted to physical modeling for the forging design.

Acoustic Emission(AE) signals obtained during fracture toughness test and fatigue test for nuclear pressure vessel material(SA 508 cl.3) and artificial AE signals from pencil break and ultrasonic pulser were classified using pattern recognition methods. Three different classifiers ; namely Minimum Distance Classifier, Linear Discriminant Classifier and Maximum Likelihood Classifier were used for pattern recognition. In this study, the performance of each classifier was compared. The discrimination of AE signals from cracking and crack surface rubbing was possible and the analysis for crack propagation was applicable by pattern recognition methods.
A computer vision system was built to automatically grade the leaf tobacco. A color image processing algorithm was developed to extract shape, color and texture features. An improved back propagation algorithm in an artificial neural network was applied to grade the Burley type dried leaf tobacco. The success rate of grading in three-grade classification(1, 3, 5) was higher than the rate of grading in six-grade classification(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, off), on the average success rate of both the twenty-five local pixel-set and the sixteen local pixel-set. And, the average grading success rate using both shape and color features was higher than the rate using shape, color and texture features. Thus, the texture feature obtained by the spatial gray level dependence method was found not to be important in grading leaf tobacco. Grading according to the shape, color and texture features obtained by machine vision system seemed to be inadequate for replacing manual grading of Burely type dried leaf tobacco.

This paper presents the development of an Artificial Neural Networks(ANN) for Short-Term Load Forecasting(STLF). First, used historical load data is divided into 5 patterns for the each seasonal data using Kohonen networks. Second, classified data is used as inputs of Back-propagation networks for next day hourly load forecasting. The proposed method was tested with KEPCO hourly record (1994-95) and we obtained desirable results.
Schemes for detecting and diagnosing faults are presented. Faults are detected when residuals change significantly and thresholds are exceed. Two stage artificial neural networks are applied to diagnose faults. The idealized steady state patterns of residuals are defined and learned by ANNs using back propagation algorithm. The first stage ANN is trained to classify the subsystem in which the various faults are located. The first stage ANN could be also used to detect faults with threshold, checking. The second stage ANNs are trained to discriminate the specific cause of a fault at the subsystem level.

In this article, the multi-objective optimization of cylindrical aluminum tubes under axial impact load is presented. The specific absorbed energy and the maximum crushing force are considered as objective functions. The geometric dimensions of tubes including diameter, length and thickness are chosen as design variables. D/t and L/D ratios are constricted in the range of which collapsing of tubes occurs in concertina or diamond mode. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal solutions. A back-propagation neural network is constructed as the surrogate model to formulate the mapping between the design variables and the objective functions. The finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit is used to generate the training and test sets for the artificial neural networks. To validate the results of finite element model, several impact tests are carried out using drop hammer testing machine.

In this study, we consider the challenges in motion planning for automated driving systems. Most of the existing online motion-planning algorithms, which take dynamics into account, find it difficult to operate in an environment with narrow passages. Some of the existing algorithms overcome this by offline preprocessing if environment is known. In this work an online algorithm for motion planning with dynamics in an unknown cluttered environment with narrow passages is presented. It utilizes an idea of hybrid planning with sampling- and discretization-based motion planners, which run simultaneously in a full configuration space and a derived reduced space. The proposed algorithm has been implemented and tested with a real autonomous vehicle. It provides significant improvements in computational time performance over basic planning algorithms and allows the generation of smoother paths than those generated by the recently developed hybrid motion planners.
This paper considers the design and implementation of novel technique of speed estimation and control for IPMSM using learning mechanism-fuzzy neural network(LM-FNN) and artificial neural network (ANN) control. The back propagation neural network technique is used to provide a real time adaptive estimation of the motor speed. This paper is proposed the theoretical analysis as well as the simulation results to verify the effectiveness of the new hybrid Intelligent control
In this paper decay and mapped elastodynamic infinite elements, based on modified Bessel shape functions and appropriate for Soil-Structure Interaction problems are described and discussed. These elements can be treated as a new form of the recently proposed Elastodynamic Infinite Elements with United Shape Functions (EIEUSF) infinite elements. The formulation of 2D horizontal type infinite elements (HIE) is demonstrated, but by similar techniques 2D vertical (VIE) and 2D corner (CIE) infinite elements can also be formulated. It is demonstrated that the application of the elastodynamical infinite elements is the easier and appropriate way to achieve an adequate simulation including basic aspects of Soil-Structure Interaction. Continuity along the artificial boundary (the line between finite and infinite elements) is discussed as well and the application of the proposed elastodynamical infinite elements in the Finite Element Method is explained in brief. Finally, a numerical example shows the computational efficiency of the proposed infinite elements.
