The Artemisia princeps (Compositae) has been used in traditional Korean medicine for the treatment of microbial infections and inflammatory diseases. Since A. princeps is generally difficult to be discriminated from A. capillaris, A. caplillaris has been misused in place of A. princeps. To solve this problem, a rapid and nondestructive method for discrimination of A. princeps and A. capillaris samples was developed using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in the present study. A principal component analysis (PCA) and a partial least squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) were performed to discriminate two species. As a result, with the use of PLS-DA, A. princeps and A. capillaris were clustered according to their genus. These outcomes indicated that the NIRS could be useful for the discrimination between Artemisia princeps and Artemisia capillaris.
To investigate the antitumor activity of mugwort (Artemisia princeps Pampan), petroleum ether extract of mugwork was partially purified by a silica gel chromatography. Among several fractions, the fraction which was obtained under the elution with acetone, showed potent cytotoxicity against mouse leukemia cell line(Ll210), human colon cancer cell line (HCT-48) and human hepatoma cell line (Hep G2) , but was less effective with normal cell line(mouse embryo cell). Acetone fraction appeared to be glycolipid by Benedict test and the major fatty acids of the lipid were C16 ; 0 , C 18: 3by GC/MS analysis.
This study has attempted to examine the antioxidative effect of ethanol extracts, and the analysis of amino acid and sugar of hot water extracts from Artemisia princeps, Artemisia argyi and Artemisia iwayomogi. Total phenol contents were 10.2 mg/$m\ell$, 4.7 mg/$m\ell$, and 7.0 mg/$m\ell$ in A. princeps, A. argyi and A. iwayomogi, respectively. Also, flavonoid contents were 6.1 mg%, 3.6 mg%, and 1.8 mg% in A. princeps, A. argyi and A. iwayomogi, respectively. Hot water extract from A. argyi showed highest electron donating ability toward DPPH. The contents of total amino acid by HPLC analysis were in the increasing order of A. princeps, A. argyi and A. iwayomogi. Of amino acid compositions, proline was largest in examined Artemisia sp.. The contents of total sugar by HPLC analysis were largest in A. iwayomogi. Of the sugar compositions, the glucose content was largest in examined all Artemisia sp., and the fructose content was in the increasing order of A. iwayomogi, A. argyi and A. princeps.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of herbicide treatment and seeding method on the forage yield, weed control, and persistency in the Artemisia princeps dominated pasture. It was arranged as a randomized block design with seven treatments(\circled1 oversowing(control),\circled2 glyphosate 4 ${\ell}$/ha + oveysowing a \circled3glyphosate 4 ${\ell}$/ha + chiselreseeding, \circled4 paraquat dichloride 3 ${\ell}$/ha + oversowing,\circled5 paraquat dichloride 3 ${\ell}$/ha + chiselreseeding, \circled6 dicamba 4 ${\ell}$/ha + oversowing and \circled7 dicamba 4 ${\ell}$/ha + chiselreseeding), and conducted at National Livestock Research Institute in Suwon from June, 1985 to October, 1987. In the Artemisia princeps dominated pasture, the treatments of glyphosate 4 ${\ell}$/ha before oversowipg or chisel reseeding controlled 80.7-83.3% of the Artemisia princeps, and for two years the average dry weight of Artemisiaprinceps greatly decreased, but dry matter(DM) yield of forage increased 57-96% than that pf control. In the herbicide treatments, the average DM yield of forage in the plots with chisel r e d i n g was significantly higher when compared to oversowing. The results in this study indicated that herbicide treatment was effective for the control of Artemisiaprinceps, and good renovation of grassland and higher DM yield of forage could be obtained by application of glyphosate.
In vitro antioxidant and anticoagulant activities of 50% ethanolic extract from Ganghwa medicinal mugwort (Artemisia princeps Pampanini) were investigated. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents of the mugwort extract were 106.9±3.3 and 34.1±0.4 mg/g-extract, respectively. The mugwort extract possessed a potent scavenging activity against radicals and nitrite, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Also the mugwort extract delayed the plasma coagulation time through the inhibition of common coagulation pathway in a dose-dependent manner.
To examine the effect of Artemisia princeps var orientalis on cardiovascular system, cadiovascular response from its water extracts were studied in the atria and aortae of normal rats. The extracts diminished spontaneous beat and contractile force in the left and right atria, and caused the relaxation of thoraic aortae. As for the blood pressure, the mugwort extract had a descending effect.

The anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions of Cedrela sinensis, Oenanthe javanica and ARtemisia princeps var. orientalis were carried out. The methanolic extract of Artemisia princeps var. orientalis showed the inhibitory effect on carrageenin-induced edema as well as vascular permeability in mice. And we also found the alagesic activity in these plants.

This study was investigated about decomposition process of litter that is reduction pathway of phosphorus from plant body to soil That is, in each community of Miscanthus sinensis, SaSa palmalta. Artemisia princeps and Polygonum thunbergii, disappearing speed was calculated from total fallen leaves yield supplied as litter and litter existant yield. Besides, setting up litter bag that put litter in nylon mesh bag. calculated disappearing speed from decreasing speed of the weight of contents and then was compared and examined. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Maximum litter yield was sequently Miscanthus sinensis>SaSa palmalta>Artemisia princeps>Polygonum thunbergii, but, supplied litter yield was sequently Artemisia princeps>Miscanthus sinenis>Polygonum thunbergii>SaSa palmalta. 2. Reduction speed of phosphorus from plant body to soil was Polygonum thunbergii>Artemisia princeps>Miscanthus sinensis>SaSa palmalta. 3. Caculated disappearing speed using litter bag method was shown latter tendency than that of natural condition. 4. It was significantly negative relationship between N contents of litter and disappearing speed of litter.
The importance of natural preservative has increased in recent years. The natural preservatives have been used in the field of foods, cosmetics and pharmacology. In the present work Artemisia sp., well recognized for their effect of antimicrobial activity, were extracted by methanol and water sequentially for selecting only water-soluble compounds that can be used as additives in food and cosmetics. Antimicrobial activities of water extracts from stem and leaf of Artemisia princeps var. orientalis were investigated by the disc diffusion method. Two gram positive bacteria(Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and three gram negative bacteria(Escherichia coil, Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Pseudomonas putida) were used for antimicrobial activity studies. The water-soluble compounds from methanol extract showed higher antimicrobial activity than only water extract to these bacteria. Comparative evaluation of water-soluble metabolite profiles with caffeic acid that is known as an antimicrobial compound from Artemisia sp. was performed by high performance liquid chromatography with photo-diode array detection.
