  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigatecomplementary therapiesprovided at hospice palliative care facilities in South Koreaas designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Methods: The survey was conducted via e-mail from September 2 to September 23, 2020, with responsesfrom 109 therapists and 59 managers from 55 different hospice care facilities. Results: Hospices provided an average of 3.67 different types of therapies, ranging from 1 to 7 different types. The most common types of therapies were horticultural therapy (81.4%), music therapy (79.7%), art therapy (76.3%), and aromatherapy (57.6%). The average frequency of sessions was once a week, the median duration was 60 minutes. Most therapists (96.3%) had qualifications, but the certification-issuing organizations and training intensiveness varied greatly. None of the therapists were employed on a full-time basis, and their average monthly income was KRW 270,000. Therapists and managers gave average scores of 8.90 and 8.38 out of 10, respectively, regarding the positive impact of complementary therapies on patients. Conclusion: In order for patients and their families to benefit from complementary therapiesat hospice care facilities, in addition tobetter terms of employment for therapists, evidence-based guidelines for different types of therapies are needed so that therapy sessions can be conducted according to the theoretical underpinnings and characteristics of the type of therapy. It is expected that the results of this study will be used for policy-making in support of therapy as an essential hospice service.

  • This study aims not only to access the visual thought-oriented approach that has been implemented in established art therapy and education but also to integrate language education and therapeutic approach to support the development of school-age children. Thus, text mining technique was applied to search for areas where different areas of language and art can be integrated. This research was conducted in accordance with the procedure of basic research, preliminary DB construction, text screening, DB pre-processing and confirmation, stop-words removing, text mining analysis and the deduction about the convergent areas. These results demonstrated that this study draws convergence areas related to regional, communication, and learning functions, areas related to problem solving and sensory organs, areas related to art and intelligence, areas related to information and communication, areas related to home and disability, topics, conceptualization, peer-related areas, integration, reorganization, attitudes. In conclusion, this study is meaningful in that it established a framework for designing an activity-centered convergence program of art and language in the future and attempted a holistic approach to support child development.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects a music group therapy program has on cognitive function and life satisfaction. We targeted the elderly who are receiving service at a daycare center. This study monitored seventeen elderly subjects who were available for language communication, walking, and defecation function even if the subject had a slight mind-body function disorder based on using the service of the daycare facilities. The subjects visited each of the welfare centers one week prior to the Korean classical music group therapy program. We conducted a pre-test of MMSE-K(Mini-Mental State Examination, Korean version) modified by Park and Gwon(1989). We also supplemented the MMSE developed by Folstein(1975) and LSI-A(Life Satisfaction Index) for the elderly developed by Neugarten, Havighurst and Tobin(1961). We conducted the Korean classical music group therapy program for 15 sessions at 50 minutes each for 1~2 times a week from July 9 to September 13, 2013 at the daycare center for OO senior welfare center. The welfare center belongs to the experimental group, excluding the OO general welfare center, which is the control group. Finally, we carried out the post-test of the MMSE-K and LSI-A in the same manner as the pre-test. We carried out the post-test on July 17, 2013, 4 days after concluding the Korean classical music group therapy program. A t-test was used in order to analyze the differences in cognitive function and life satisfaction according to each group. We used SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. This study has significance by proving that the use of Korean classical music is conducive in the improvement of cognitive function and life satisfaction of the elderly at the daycare facilities. Also, we presented the actual contents of the study to the clinical field.

  • This study investigated the effects of depression, anxiety, and impulsiveness on suicidal thoughts among adolescents with the goal of better understanding the psychological needs of adolescents and to provide them with more effective counseling and guidance. Participants for this study included 340 high school students in their first and second year living in large urban centers. Respondents answered a questionnaire that documented their experiences related to depression, anxiety, impulsiveness, and suicidal thoughts. Data analysis was performed using the means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and multiple regression using the IBM SPSS 19.0 statistics program. The results were as follows. There was no statistically significant difference in anxiety and impulsiveness based on gender. However, female respondents demonstrated a higher rate of suicidal thoughts than male respondents. Second, in both sexes, comparative analysis between depression, anxiety, impulsiveness, and suicidal thoughts revealed that respondents with higher levels of depression and anxiety demonstrated elevated levels of suicidal thoughts. Impulsiveness demonstrated a correlation with suicidal thoughts only for female participants. Third, while depression and anxiety affected suicidal thoughts in both male and female respondents, impulsiveness did not affect suicidal thoughts, with depression having the strongest effect.

  • Background: The presence of gross deletions in the human immunodeficiency virus nef gene ($g{\Delta}nef$) is associated with long-term nonprogression of infected patients. Here, we investigated how quickly genetic defects in the nef gene are associated with Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) intakein 10 long-term slow progressors. Methods: This study was divided into three phases over a 20-yr period; baseline, KRG intake alone, and KRG plus highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART). nef gene amplicons were obtained using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nested PCR from 10 long-term slow progressors (n = 1,396), and nested PCR from 36 control patients (n = 198), and 28 ART patients (n = 157), and these were then sequenced. The proportion of $g{\Delta}nef$, premature stop codons, and not in-frame insertion or deletion of a nucleotide was compared between three phases, control, and ART patients. Results: The proportion of defective nef genes was significantly higher in on-KRG patients (15.6%) than in baseline (5.7%), control (5.6%), on-KRG plus ART phase (7.8%), and on-ART patients (6.6%; p < 0.01). Small in-frame deletions or insertions were significantly more frequent among patients treated with KRG alone compared with controls (p < 0.01). Significantly fewer instances of genetic defects were detected in samples taken during the KRG plus ART phase (7.8%; p < 0.01). The earliest defects detected were $g{\Delta}nef$ and small in-frame deletions after 7 mo and 67 mo of KRG intake, respectively. Conclusion: KRG treatment might induce genetic defects in the nef gene. This report provides new insight into the importance of genetic defects in the pathogenesis of AIDS.
