  • Three different methods were employed to measure the degree of aerial oxidation in coal and the resulting oxidation/weathering indices were applied to obtain kinetic parameters of aerial oxidation processes, The index (i.e., slurry pH, Free Swelling Index, weight gain) values were subjected to kinetic analysis based on power-law Arrhenius type reaction model. The results show that activation energy of the aerial oxidation in 20-29$0^{\circ}C$ is in the range of 12-16 ㎉/㏖ and the agreement among three techniques is remarkable. The first order kinetic model is suitable in describing low temperature aerial oxidation process, except in the FSI case where the zero order expression is the best one.

  • We present recent results on ablation mechanism, single-pulse laser micropatterning , pulsed-laser deposition(PLD) and particulates formation accompanying laser ablation, with special emplasis on polymers, in particular polymide, (PI), and polytetrafluoroethylene, (PTFE). Ablation of polymers is described on the basis of photothermal bond breaking within the bulk material. Here, we assume a first order chemical reaction, which can be described by an Arrhenius law. Ablation starts when the density of broken bonds at the surface reaches a certain critical value. Single-pulse laser ablation of polyimide shows a clear-length dependence of the threshold fluence. This experimental result strongly supports a thermal ablation model. We discuss the various possibilities and drawbacks of PLD and describe the morphology, physical properties and applications of PTFE films.

  • This study examined the flow properties, paste clarity, freeze-thaw stability and gel strength of acetylated sweet potato starch (ASPS) pastes and gels as a function of degree of substitution (DS). ASPS showed high shear-thinning flow behaviors with high Casson yield stress ($\sigma_{oc}$). Consistency index (K), apparent viscosity ($\eta_{a,100}$) and $\sigma_{oc}$ values of ASPS increased with an increase in DS. In the temperature range of $25{\sim}70^{\circ}C$, ASPS followed an Arrhenius temperature relationship. The activation energies (Ea=13.2~14.3 kJ/mol) of the ASPS samples were much lower than that (18.1 kJ/mol) of the native sweet potato starch (SPS). ASPS gels showed better freeze-thaw stability with a significant decrease in syneresis (%) compared to SPS gel. The gel strength values of ASPS were much lower than that of SPS, and significantly decreased with an increase in DS. The clarity of native SPS paste increased after acetylation.

  • To improve the utilization of pear in its processing, the cloudy and clear juice concentrates were prepared and their rheological properties were investigated in the range of temperatures($5{\sim}60^{\circ}C$) and concentrations($15{\sim}60^{\circ}Brix$). Pear juice concentrates showed flow behavior close to Newtonian fluids. Their flow behavior was also explained by applying Power law model and Herschel-Bulkley model. Flow behavior index did not have good correlation with concentration, but decreased with the increase of temperature, showing pseudoplastic properties. Consistency index increased with the increase of concentration and with the decrease of temperature. The effect of temperature and concentration on the apparent viscosity at 1500 1/s shear rate was examined by applying Arrhenius equation. The activation energy for flow of the cloudy and clear pear juice concentrates increased from $1.5140{\times}10^4\;to\;3.4141{\times}10^4\;J/kg{\cdot}mol$, and from $1.4762{\times}10^4\;to\;3.4963{\times}10^4\;J/kg{\cdot}mol$ with the increase of concentration, respectively. The influence of temperature on the apparent viscosity was more pronounced at higher concentration. And the concentration-dependent constant A decreased from $0.0789\;to\;0.0484^{\circ}Brix^{-1}$, and from $0.0786\;to\;0.0476^{\circ}Brix^1$ with the increase of temperature, respectively.

  • Effects of sucrose at different concentrations (0, 10, 20, and 30%, w/w) on steady and dynamic shear rheological properties of sweet potato starch (SPS) paste (5%, w/w) were investigated. The steady shear rheological properties of SPS-sucrose composites were determined from rheological parameters based on power law and Casson flow models. At 25$^{\circ}C$ all the samples showed pseudoplastic and thixoropic behavior with high yield stress. Consistence index (K), apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,100}$), and yield stress (${\sigma}_{oc}$) values of SPS-sucrose composites decreased with increasing sucrose concentration from 10% to 30%. The decrease of swelling power was observed at higher sucrose concentration (>20%) and the low swelling power yielded a lower K, ${\eta}_{a,100}$, and ${\sigma}_{oc}$ values. In temperature range of 25-70$^{\circ}C$, Arrhenius equation adequately assessed variation with temperature. Oscillatory test data showed weak gel-like behavior. Magnitudes of storage (G') and loss (G") moduli increased with an increase in sucrose concentration and frequency. The SPS-sucrose composite at 30% concentration closely followed the Cox-Merz superposition rule.

  • Inverter surge resistant enameled wire was prepared with an organic/inorganic hybrid nanocomposite, and the effect of ambient temperature on the insulation lifetime of the enameled wire in the form of twisted pair was studied by a withstanding voltage tester. The organic polymer was Polyesterimide-polyamideimide (EI/AI) and the inorganic material was a Nano-sized silica (average particle size : 15 nm). The enamel thickness was 50 μm and the ambient temperature was 100, 150, 200, and 250, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that Nano-sized Silica were evenly dispersed in EI/AI. There were many air gaps in a twisted pair, therefore, when voltage was applied to the twisted pair, enamel erosion took place in the air gap area because of partial discharge accordi, ng to Paschen’s law. As ambient temperature increased, insulation lifetime decreased according to Arrhenius relationship, which was explained by the increasing mobility of polymer chains in EI or AI. And insulation breakdown voltage value at 10 kHz was 1,864.5 sec (31.1 min), which is 1.9 times higher than at 20 kHz, 981.6 sec (16.4 min).

  • The danger of self-ignition of single base propellants will increase with time. Therefore, a good prediction of the safe storage time is very important. In order to determine the remaining shelf-life of the propellants, the content of stabilizer is determined. The propellants stored under normal storage conditions about 10 to 18 years were investigated and accelerated aging test was carried out by storing propellant sample at higher temperature. Finally, we analyzed the results by various methods in order to show the best way to predict the realistic shelf-life. The safe storage life of the propellants will be 24 years, at least 15 years. In case of applying Arrhenius's law, using the reaction rate constant at 28$^{\circ}C$ to 30$^{\circ}C$ to predict the shelf-life by accelerated aging test is reasonable for a good prediction.

  • The effective moisture diffusivity and its dependence on drying temperature during drying of rapeseed were experimentally investigated. The data were recorded from thin layer drying experiments at nine different combinations of drying air temperatures of 40, 50, and $60^{\circ}C$ and the relative humidities of 30, 45, and 60%. The moisture diffusion equation was analyzed using stepwise multiple regression analysis. Effective moisture diffusivities were calculated based on the moisture diffusion equation for a spherical shape using Fick's second law. The effective diffusivities during the drying of rapeseed were $l.72{\times}10^{-11}$, $2.41{\times}10^{-11}$ and $3.31{\times}10^{-11}\;m^2{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 40, 50 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. The activation energy for moisture diffusion during drying was $28.47\;kJ{\cdot}mol^{-1}$. The dependence of moisture diffusivity on temperature was described by an Arrhenius-type equation. Drying occurred in the falling rate period and the internal moisture diffusion phenomenon is the governing physical mechanism of the moisture movement in the particles.
