Modification of polyamide reverse osmosis membranes seeking for better resistance to oxidizing agents

  • One of the major limitations in the use of commercial aromatic polyamide thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes is to maintain high performance over a long period of operation, due to the sensitivity of polyamide (PA) skin layer to oxidizing agents, such as chlorine, even at very low concentrations in feed water. This article reports surface modification of a commercial TFC RO membrane (BW30-Dow Filmtec) by covering it with a thin film of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) to improve its resistance to chlorine. Crosslinking reaction was carried out at 25 and $40^{\circ}C$ by using PVA 1.0 wt.% solutions at different GA/PVA mass ratio, namely 0.0022, 0.0043 and 0.013. Water swelling measurements indicated a maximum crosslinking density for PVA films prepared at $40^{\circ}C$ and GA/PVA 0.0043. ATR-FTIR and TGA analysis confirmed the reaction between GA and PVA. SEM images of the original and modified membranes were used to evaluate the surface coating. Chlorine resistance of original and modified membranes was evaluated by exposing it to an oxidant solution (NaClO 300 mg/L, NaCl 2,000 mg/L, pH 9.5) and measuring water permeability and salt rejection during more than 100 h period. The surface modification effectively was demonstrated by increasing the chlorine resistance of PA commercial membrane from 1,000 ppm.h to more than 15.000 ppm.h.

일반인구에서 유전자 다형성이 요중 1-hydroxypyrene 및 2-naphthol의 배설량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Genetic Polymorphisms on Urinary Excretion of 1-Hydroxypyrene and 2-Naphthol)

  • This study was performed to determine the effects of genetic polymorphisms, such as glutathione S-transferase ${\mu}1(GSTM1)$, glutathione S-transferase ${\Theta}1\;(GSTM1)$, glutathione S-transferase ${\pi}l (GSTP1)$, aryl hydrocarbon N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2), cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) on the concentrations of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) and 2-naphthol in general population with no occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Study subjects were 257 men who visited a health promotion center in Susan. A questionnaire was used to obtain detailed data about age, smoking, drinking, body fat mass, intake of fat etc. Urinary l-OHP and 2-naphthol concentration were analyzed by HPLC system with a fluorescence detector. A multiplex PCR method was used to identify the genotypes for GSTM1 and GSTT1. The polymorphisms of GSTP1, NAT2, CYP1A1 and CYP2E1 were determined by the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Urinary 1-OHP concentration was higher in deleted genotype of GSTM1, increased as smoking and alcohol drinking increased. Urinary 2-naphthol concentration was also rely on the age and smoking. Neither genetic polymorphism nor drinking-related factors were significantly related to urinary 2-naphthol concentration. No significant relation was found between physical characteristics and concentrations of urinary PAHs metabolites in the subjects, but the geometric mean of urinary 1-OHP and 2-naphthol was higher in the group with higher value compared to median value. These data suggest that in general population occupationally not exposed to PAHs, urinary concentration of PAHs metabolites is influenced by smoking, alcohol drinking and deleted genotype of GSTM1 in 1-OHP and smoking in 2-naphthol.

추출방법에 따른 Nutmeg Oil의 물리적, 화학적 성질에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Some Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Nutmeg Oil by Different Extraction Methods)

  • 추출방법을 달리하여 얻은 육두구 정유에 대한 물리적 성질을 측정하고, GC와 GC/MS를 이용하여 분석하였다. 추출수율은 용매추출이 23%로 가장 많았고 SDE 추출, $CO_2$ 추출순이었다. 육두구유에 대한 물리적 성질과 GC분석결과에서 본 실험에 사용한 육두구는 East Indies type에 가까운 것을 확인할 수 있었고 각각 추출물의 분석결과로부터 sabinene은 3.6-14.1%, miristicin은 28.4-48.7% elemicin은 1.2-2.1%이 함유되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또 발암물질로 알려진 safrole은 SDE 추출에서 3.8%, 용매추출에서 3.6%, $CO_2$추출에서 5.6% 함유하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. SDE 추출이나 용매추출에서 확인된 camphene은 $CO_2$추출에서 확인할 수 없었고 monoterpene, terpene alcohol 계통의 화합물은 SDE 추출이나 용매 추출에 많았다. 방향족 화합물은 $CO_2$추출에서 많이 추출됨을 확인할 수 있었다.

Characterization and distribution of phenolics in carrot cell walls

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the release of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and other compounds from cell wall materials(CWM) and their cellulose fraction from carrot with chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis. To investigate this effect on cell wall chemistry of carrot, alcohol insoluble residue(AIR) of CWM were prepared and were extracted sequentially with water, imidazole, CDTA(-1, -2), Na$_2$CO$_3$(-1, -2), KOH(0.5, 1.0 and 4M), to leave a residue. These were analysed for their carbohydrate and phenolic acids composition. Arabinose and galactose were the main noncellulosic sugars. Phenolics esterified to cell walls in carrot were found to consist primarily of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with minor contribution from vanillin, ferulic acid and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde. p-Hydroxybenzoic acid was quite strongly bound to the cell wall. The contents of p-hydroxybenzoic acid in 0.5M KOH, Na$_2$CO$_3$-2, IM KOH, and ${\alpha}$-cellulose were 2,097, 1,360, 1,140, and 717 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g AIR from CWM, respectively. Alkali labile unknown aromatic compound(C$\sub$7/H$\sub$10/O$_2$) was found in ${\alpha}$ -cellulose hydrolyzate digested with driselase and cellulase. This compound was also found in hydrolyzate of 2 M trifluoroacetic acid at 120$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Driselase treatment solubilized only 46.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g of the p-hydroxybenzoic acid from carrot AIR. These results indicate that p-hydroxybenzoic acid was associated with neutral polysaccharides, long chain galactose and branched arabinan from graded alcohol precipitation.

Correlation of the Rates of Solvolysis of Electron-Rich Benzoyl Chloride Using the Extended Grunwald-Wistein Equation

  • The solvolysis rate constants of piperonyloyl chloride (1) in 27 different solvents are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale, $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale, and I aromatic ring parameter with sensitivity values of $0.30{\pm}0.05$, $0.71{\pm}0.02$, and $0.60{\pm}0.04$ for l, m, and h, respectively. The solvent kinetic isotope effect values (SKIE, $k_{MeOH}/k_{MeOD}$ and $k_{50%MeOD-50%D2O}$) of 1.16 and 1.12 were also in accord with the values for the $S_N1$ mechanism and/or the dissociative $S_N2$ mechanism. The product selectivity values (S) for solvolysis of 1 in alcohol/water mixtures were in the range of 0.5 to 1.9, which is also consistent with the proposed unimolecular ionization mechanism.

  • Volatile flavor compounds in salt fermented big eyed herring were analyzed by vacuum simultaneous distillation solvent extraction/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/olfactometry and aroma extract dilution anlaysis. A total of 44 volatile compounds were detected by GC/O analysis. Of these, 23 were positively identified, and composed of aldehydes(7), esters(5), ketones(4), sulfur containing compounds (3), aromatic hydrocarbons(2), alcohol(1) and nitrogen containing compound(1). Predominant odorants (Log3FD$\geq$5) in sample were ethyl butanoate(bubble gum /sweet candy-like), 3 methylbutyl butanoate (almond /nutty), 1 octen 3 one(earthy/mushroom like), (E,E) 2,6 nonadienal(roasted wheat/grainy), dimethyl trisulfide(soy sauce /cooked cabbage like), 2 acetylpyrazine(nutty/baked potato like) and unidentified compound(RI=1867, seaweed like).

Development of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Reductase YOL151W Mutants Suitable for Chiral Alcohol Synthesis Using an NADH Cofactor Regeneration System

  • The aldo-keto reductases catalyze reduction reactions using various aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes/ketones. Most reductases require NADPH exclusively as their cofactors. However, NADPH is much more expensive and unstable than NADH. In this study, we attempted to change the five amino acid residues that interact with the 2'-phosphate group of the adenosine ribose of NADPH. These residues were selected based on a docking model of the YOL151W reductase and were substituted with other amino acids to develop NADH-utilizing enzymes. Ten mutants were constructed by site-directed mutagenesis and expressed in Escherichia coli. Among them, four mutants showed higher reductase activities than wild-type when using the NADH cofactor. Analysis of the kinetic parameters for the wild type and mutants indicated that the $k_{cat}/K_{m}$ value of the Asn9Glu mutant toward NADH increased 3-fold. A docking model was used to show that the carboxyl group of Glu 9 of the mutant formed an additional hydrogen bond with the 2'-hydroxyl group of adenosine ribose. The Asn9Glu mutant was able to produce (R)-ethyl-4-chloro-3-hydroxyl butanoate rapidly when using the NADH regeneration system.

  • Volatile flavor compounds in Korean salt fermented shrimp on the market were analyzed by vacuum simultaneous distillation solvent extraction/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/olfac tometry(V SDE/GC/MS/O) and aroma extract dilution anlaysis(AEDA). A total of 32 volatile com pounds were detected by GC/O analysis. Of these, 18 were positively identified, and composed of S containing compounds(5), aldehydes(4), ketones(3), N containing compounds(3), ester(1), alcohol(1) and aromatic hydrocarbon(1). Predominant odorants(Log3FD$\geq$4) in salt fermented shrimp were 2,3 butanedione(sour/buttery), 1 octen 3 one(earthy/mushroom like), dimethyl trisulfide(cooked cabbage /soy sauce like) and 2 acetylthiazole(grainy/nutty). Predominant free amino acids were aspartic acid, glutamic acid(sour and umami taste), arginine, methionine(bitter) and lysine(sweet and bitter) in evaluation of taste value.

인쇄업에서 배출되는 반응성 VOCs 종류와 흡착 제거 방법의 적용 (Volatile organic compounds emitted from printing processes and their removal by adsorption)

  • In this study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from printing industries were analyzed, and an inorganic adsorbent, ${\gamma}-alumina$, was selected for the effective control of the VOC emissions. Printing processes commonly require inks, thinners, and cleaners, and they were mixed organic solvents containing aromatic compounds, ketones, and alcohols. Therefore, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) were selected as model compounds for this study. The adsorptive properties using ${\gamma}-alumina$ were determined for the model compounds. Both batch isotherm and continuous flow column tests demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of MEK and IPA was 3~4 times higher than that of toluene. The column test performed at an inlet toluene concentration of 100 ppm showed that an 80% breakthrough for toluene was observed after 3 hours, but both MEK and IPA were continuously adsorbed during the same time period. A numerical model simulated that the ${\gamma}-alumina$ could remove toluene at a loading rate of 0.4 mg/min only for a 4-hour period, which might be too short of a duration for real applications. Consequently, lifetime enhancement for ${\gamma}-alumina$ must be implemented, and ozone oxidation and regeneration would be feasible options.

혼합잡곡 증류주 제조를 위한 발효 특성 (Fermentation Characteristics for Preparation of Distilled Liquor Made of Mixed Grains)

  • 본 연구에서는 쌀과 다양한 잡곡 원료를 이용한 증류식 소주의 발효조건 및 증류 품질을 검토하였다. 잡곡 발효주를 제조 후 증류하여 최적 발효조건 및 증류조건 검토 결과 보리 100% 만으로 발효시킨 경우 알코올이 5.6%로 가장 낮게 나타났으며 쌀을 이용한 경우 15.2%로 가장 높게 나타났다. 수수 첨가량을 달리한 실험에서는 대조구로 설정한 수수 무첨가 시료의 경우 알코올이 19.0%로 나타났으며, 수수 첨가량이 증가함에 따라 알코올이 조금씩 감소하였으나 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다. 관능평가 결과에서는 수수 5% 첨가 증류주에서 높은 관능결과를 나타내었다. 입국첨가량에 따른 증류주의 관능평가 결과 입국 7% 첨가시에 향과 종합적 기호도가 가장 좋았으며 입국첨가량이 증가함에 따라 총 유기산 함량은 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 5분도 쌀 첨가량(40, 50, 60, 70%)에 따른 증류주의 발효특성을 살펴본 결과 알코올과 산도는 첨가량에 따라 큰 차이가 없었으며 주요 유기산은 초기 발효에서는 malic acid와 lactic acid였으나 발효 후기에는 citric acid와 lactic acid로 바뀌었다. 최종적으로 발효방식은 동일하게 하면서 원료에 있어 쌀과 혼합잡곡을 이용한 증류주의 관능평가 결과와 종합적인 기호도에서는 혼합잡곡 증류주가 약간 높은 점수를 얻었으나 향에서는 유의적인 차이가 있을 정도의 차이를 나타내었다. 향기 성분 분석 결과에서는 부드러운 향을 내는 ethyl palmitate의 %area가 잡곡 증류주에서 높게 검출되었다.
