Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were commercially produced as complex mixtures beginning in 1929. The PCBs manufactured commercially are known by a variety of trade names including; Aroclor (USA), Phenoclor (France), Kaneclor (Japan), Sovol (USSR) and so on. PCBs are a class of 209 congeners that were widely used in a wide variety of applications, including dielectric fluid in transformers and large capacitors; heat transfer fluids; hydraulic fluids; lubricating and cutting oils; and as additives in pesticides, paints, adhesives, sealants, and plastics. The quantification methods of peak matching and coefficient comparison were compared using the Aroclor 1242, 1248, 1254, 1260 standards. Also, six transformer oils were analyzed as a main source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) emission into the environment. The transformer oils contained the pure and mixed of Aroclor 1242, Aroclor 1254, and Aroclor 1260. The analytical results using two quantification methods showed the little difference between the measured results.
The sorption kinetic was studied to evaluate feasibility of removing PCBs from mineral oil with activated carbon. Adsorption efficiency for Aroclor 1242 which is composed of lower chlorinated PCB formulations was $\geq$ 95%, whereas the adsorption efficiency for Aroclor 1260 having higher chlorinated constituents was considerably lower with the efficiency falling to 75%. The observed difference in the adsorption efficiency is attributed to the geometry of PCBs with non-planar and coplanar structure. The concentration of coplanar PCBs is appreciably higher in Aroclor 1242. Since toxicity is primarily associated with coplanar congeners, the preferential adsorption of coplanar congeners by activated carbon accounts for the fact that toxicity reduction can be achieved through this process. The efficiency of process was assessed in terms of Toxicity Equivalence Factor (TEF).

PCBs had numerous uses such as hydraulic fluid, heat exchange fluid, sealant, lubricant, and carbonless copy paper. They are most likely found in electric utilities, power stations, industrial facilities, electronic manufacturing plants, petrochemical plants, railroad systems, electric equipment repair facilities, mining sites (active or abandoned), and military camps. Due to its outstanding chemical and thermal stabilities and electrical insulation properties, the commercial and industrial products of PCBs, such as Aroclors, Kaneclors, Clophens, Phenaclors etc., had been widely used as thermal oil and transformer oil from 1930s until the 1970s. The transformer oils were analyzed as a main source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) emission into the environment. Qualitative estimation of oil extracts as carried out with Aroclor 1242, 1248, 1254, 1260. The transformer oils contained the pure and mixed of Aroclor 1242, Aroclor 1254, and Aroclor 1260. Also, commercial screening kit of 20 ppm and 50 ppm were applied to the transformer oil samples.
In this study, the possibility of biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by various white rot fungi was evaluated, and outstanding white rot fungi for the degradation of PCBs were selected. Seven white rot fungi were used to degrade Aroclor 1254 and 1260, which are widely considered to be toxic and difficult to degrade. And the degradation rates of Aroclors by selected white rot fungi were performed by GC analysis. Through the resistance test of white rot fungi on different concentrations of PCBs, the inhibition of mycelial growth of Cystidodontia isubellina was much less than that of others, and this fungus grew faster than others, relatively. Based on this result, it was considered that C. isubellina was selected as degrading fungus for Aroclors. As a result of biodegradation rate of Aroclors by Cystidodontia isubellina, the degradation rate of Arolor 1254 was reached to 57.57% in 13 days, which showed very high degradation rate. Also the degradation rate of Aroclor 1260 by C. isubellina had a tendency of increasing along with increasing incubation day. Maximal degradation rate of Aroclor 1260 was 49.43% at 13 days. Based on this results, it indicated that in comparison with a previous study, high degradation rate was obtained by C. isubellina.
This study was performed to search for useful separation properties and elution orders of three GC columns (DB-1, DB-5MS, SPB-Octyl) for 209 PCBs congeners using M-1668A-0.01X-SET of the AccuStandard Inc.. In addition, to confirm the quantitative peak in peak pattern method, the IUPAC Nos. of PCBs congener peaks were identified with 4 Aroclor standards (Aroclor-1242, 1248, 1254 and 1260). The separation property of dioxin-like PCBs congeners by four columns (DB-1, DB-5MS, SP-2331 and SPB-Octyl) was excellent in SP-2331. DB-1 and SPB-Octyl columns are necessary to use with a column of other types.
Incubation of $S(-)-^3H$-nicotine with rabbit lung microsomes in the presence of dioxygen and NADPH results in the formation of metabolities that bind covalently to microsomal macro-molecules. The addition of cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase inhibitors, $\alpha$-methylbenzyl ami-nobenzotriazole and aroclor 1260, inhibited both (S)-nicotine metabolism and covalent binding. The relative rates of oxidation of nicotine $\Delta^{1',5'}$ iminium ion to continine indicates that lung $100,000\times{g}$ supematant catalyzed this oxidation approximately 18 times slower than that of liver system based on mg of protein, and increased covalent interactions. Since than that of liver system based on mg of protein, nd increased covalent interactions. Since the activity of lung iminium oxidase appears much lowr than the liver, it is tempting to speculate that localized concentrations of nicotine $\Delta^{1',5'}$ iminium ion in the lung will survive for a longer period of time. These results support that cytochrome P-450 catalyzed oxidation of nicotine leads to the formation of reactive nad electrophilic intemediates capable of chemical interactions with biomacromolecules.

To investigate the relationship between polychlorinated byphenyls (PCBs) sources and concentration level in sediment, total 63 sediment samples with three-time sampling at one site were measured at 21 sites in Nakdong River. As a result of analysis, total concentrations and toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentration of Dioxin-like PCBs were ranged from 3.0 to 6,600 pg/g-dry with a mean value of 440 pg/g-dry and

The levels of total PCBs, Co-PCBs and PCDD/Fs in the transformer insulation oil samples obtained using GC/ECD and HRGC/HRMS were ranged from N.D. to 77.3 ppm, from 0.0863 to 2.49 ppm and from N.D. to 0.00241 ppm, respectively. In terms of WHO-TEQ values, Co-PCBs and PCDD/Fs were ranged from 23.3 to 600 pgTEQ/g and from N.D. to 128 pgTEQ/g, respectively (${\Sigma}Co$-PCBs+PCDD/Fs concentration was calculated 24.4~728 pgTEQ/g). Although, the contribution of PCDD/Fs was below 12% in total TEQ concentration, it is suggested contamination of PCDD/Fs in transformer insulation oils. Among 10 samples, 4 samples showed higher concentration than 2 ppm (specific waste criterion of Korea) and Aroclor 1242, 1248, 1254 and 1260 was detected in samples as a single or mixture of Aroclor. It was shown reliable relationship between concentration of Co-PCBs and those of PCDD/Fs (p<0.003), however, was not shown between production year of transformer and concentration of PCBs. The distribution pattern of Co-PCB congeners showed that the ratios of mono-ortho substituted congeners were higher than non-ortho substituted congeners. Among that, PCB-118 congener was predominant. In addition, the OCDD congener was predominated in PCDD/Fs congeners as above 53%. Moreover, the congener pattern of Co-PCBs was similar to that of Aroclor as well as ambient air, which suggested that PCBs volatilization from transformer insulation oil affected the pattern of Co-PCBs in ambient air.
A practical and efficient disposal of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) in waste transformer oil by a chemical dechlorination process has been reported. The transformer oil containing commercial PCB mixtures (Aroclor 1242, 1254 and 1260) was treated by the required amounts of PEG 600 (polyethylene glycol 600), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and aluminum (Al), along with different reaction temperatures and times. The reaction of PEG with PCBs under basic condition produces arylpolyglycols, the products of nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The relative efficiencies of PCB treatment process were assessed in terms of destruction and removal efficiency (DRE, %). Under the experimental conditions of PEG600/KOH/Al/100 oC/2hr, average DRE of PCBs was approximately 78%, showing completely removal of PCBs containing 7-9 chlorines on two rings of biphenyl which appear later than PCB no. 183 (2,2',3,4,4',5',6-heptaCB) in retention time of GC/ECD. However, when increasing the reaction temperature and time to 150 oC and 240 min, average DRE of PCBs including the most toxic PCBs (PCB no. 77, 105, 118, 123 and 169) in PCB family reached 99.99% or better, with the exception of PCB no. 5 and 8 (2,3-diCB and 2,4'-diCB). In studying the reaction of PEG with PCBs, it confirmed that the process led to less chlorinated PCBs through a stepwise process with the successive elimination of chlorines. The process also permits complete recovery of treated transformer oil through simple segregating procedures.
The removal of PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls) in aqueous phase was investigated in the ultraviolet (UV) process, ultrasonics (US) process and ultraviolet/ultrasonic (UV/US) process using PCB No.7 and Aroclor 1260. For PCB No.7 relatively high removal efficiency over 90% was obtained during 20 min in the UV process and UV/US process. On the other hand, lower removal efficiency of 50 - 70% was achieved for it consisted of individual congeners of PCBs containing 3~8 of chlorine atom. It was found that the dechlorination reaction (the photolytic cleavage of C-Cl bond) was considered as a main removal mechanism in the UV process while PCBs were removed by cavitation-induced radical reaction in the US process. No significant dechlorination occurred in the US process. Consequently, it was suggested that the UV process or UV/US process was applicable for the removal of PCBs in aqueous phase in terms of the removal efficiency and operation time. In addition, the application of saturating gas such as Ar and Air could be considered to control redox condition and enhance the severity of acoustic cavitation for the removal of PCBs.
