  • This paper deals with the numerical model of a bracing-friction damper system and its deployment using the optimal slip load distribution for the seismic retrofitting of a damaged building. The Slotted Bolted Connection (SBC) type friction damper system was tested to investigate its energy dissipation characteristic. Test results coincided with the numerical ones using the conventional model of a bracing-friction damper system. The placement of this device was numerically explored to apply it to the assumed damaged-building and to evaluate its efficiency. It was found by distributing the slip load that minimizes the given performance indicies based on structural response. Numerical results for the damaged building retrofitted with this slip load distribution showed that the seismic design of the bracing-friction damper system under consideration is effective for the structural response reduction.

  • The purpose of this study aims at the development of architectural design thinking which has been studied in the Kant's Epistemology to examine the Schema theories. In this point of view, the related theories are reviewed through Expression Form, representation of architectural knowledge and so on. One of these words, the Schema that formed by transcendental an Experience and Memory of transcendental an Experience, not only Play an important Part in the designer's thinking system about a specific problem but also appeared by distinctive features(image) and included by connotation as like a designer's ideology. Speaking briefly, thinking of a designer familiar with us as abstract confusion can be confined such methodological tools as schema, and image, etc., which we can easily understand the relationship among them through mechanism of Kant's [Concept-Schema-Intuition]. Evidences collected from case studies and its application on architectural design yield following results. First, design thinking can be defined as Kant's Epistemology composed of the schema and its extended factors(architectural-schema). Second, design thinking can be revealed different characteristics depending on the degree of the schema and architectural-schema. Lastly, the methodology will be proposed after application of the result to architects' works.

  • Three cases of supertall connected structures are presented and each of them represents a quite style. The first case is a strong-connected structure. The coupling function of towers and connector contributes a lot to the structural stiffness and stability. Its special construction scheme had great impact on the construction quality and the structural safety, and must be accurately considered. For the second case which is a weak-connected structure, the influences of different connecting modes to the structural dynamic characteristic were explained. Then the combined bearings were proposed to achieve the design presume. In the third case which represents the multi-supported structures, the structural distinctive mechanical properties were discussed. For the structural state during construction process is quite different from that in final service condition, two construction procedures were simulated to get an optimal one. Although there are great challenges to designers, the advantages of the supertall connected buildings are obvious. Further work is needed in this area to adapt to the development of future cities.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze common features and methodological differences of PN-spatial characteristics found in architectural theories and works of contemporary young architects in Japan, such as Sou Fujimoto, Yo shimada, Keisuke Maeda and Junya Ishigami. These architects have paid attention to space between nature and inner space and have tried to establish their own architectural theory on that. Such space is ambiguous and PN-spatial in a way that it has features of both nature and inner space. Ambiguousness is a characteristic of modern architecture and PN-spatial characteristics are one of the features of Japanese architecture. This study aims to analyze the architectural theories and works of contemporary young architects in Japan from the perspective of PN-space and to draw methodological differences and common features. Their theories and works have common features in terms of 'ambiguous spatial boundary', 'unregulated spatial territory', 'detoured circulation' and 'architectural motifs', but each has their own methodology. To sum up, the works and theories of the Japanese young architects contain the philosophy and discourse of modern architecture in general. To be sure, they clearly have characteristics of Japanese architecture, which needs to be studied constantly.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study on the characteristic of site planning of Hadrian's villa. The whole site planning of Hadrian's villa can be divided by different characteristic four groups(I-IV). It is analysed to the whole site plan of such huge complex and the site planning of partial each group which is organically connected each other. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Hadrian's villa was arranged in adapt to natural condition according to a gentle inclination by topography and terrain of the whole site which many different buildings are oriented towards natural landscape of the site and the site surroundings. 2. The site planning of Hadrian's villa is composed of dividing into four groups as plan segmentalized through various land use plan, considering for territory of functional aspect and direction of axis formed by situation and direction of topography and terrain. 3. The concept of site planning to buildings of Hadrian's villa is composed through each other connection; the first, meeting, crossing and merging with each other from arrangement by several axises, the second, change of direction with as the center a part of corner of buildings and the third, facing or inserting system to side and side, side and a part of corner of building.

  • Located in a rear garden of Changdeok Palace, Yeonkyeong-Dang is valued as the most characteristic building of the houses of aristocrats of the later Joseon Dynasty. The time of the construction has been much debated, however, it is perceived through this research that the construction was completed in September 1827(the 27nd year of king Sunjo's reign). The shape of the buildings during this period resembles a letter ㄷ as shown in the picture of Dong-Kweol. We previously described that the purpose of Yeonkyeong-Dang was to carry the portrait of king Yikjong while keeping the shape of building when it was first established until the 8th year of king Heonjong (1842). In 1865 (the 2nd year of king Gojong's reign), it was reconstructed with very different outlook which has remained the present shape. The characteristic features of the residences of aristocrats were reflected in newly reconstructed Yeonkyeong-Dang. The structure was largely divided into two quarters that occupied by male and female residents respectively. The two quarters were bordered by fences and added with a study and a pavilion. The reconstruction was conducted by king Gojong's father, Daewon- Goon and its purpose was to prepare a separate house for the king and queen before the kings wedding that was about to come. During the 19th century, building an imitation of houses of aristocrats became quite a trend in the palace. Built in 1847, Nakseon-Jae was precedented and followed by Yeonkyeong-Dang. Also later Geoncheong Palace was built in Kyeongbok Palace in 1873. All of the three buildings imitated houses of aristocrats. Divided residences of male and female sections and splendid decorations were common features. Nakseon-Jae was the smallest in the structure of spaces, ornamentation of details and its sizes, Yeonkyeong-Dang was the second and Geoncheong Palace was the most distinguished building. The constructions of these three buildings created an innovative architectural wave in the 19th century palace. Yeonkyeong-Dang was the building that mediated the new flow of architectural structure in the 19th century palace.

  • The music has influenced on the aesthetics, structure and symbol of the architecture from the ancient to the present. and been to be like architecture. It is important part that through the study of musical proportion by number, which is method of architectural and musical composition, resemblance can be found, music is resemble to architecture and this recognition is general as well in renaissance as architect and musician after that time. Therefore, in this background and aesthetics, the purpose of this study is to research purpose and methodology of the proportion of musical consonance and dissonance used in L. B. Alberti's architecture. At first, for the background of aesthetics this study previewed characteristic of aesthetics arranged by subjectivism and objectivism, and this musical proportion which is applicable for Alberti's architecture was defined. secondly, Alberti's architectural aesthetics (concinnitas) of the higher concept was defined by methodology of the lower concept, and this study described the application of dissonance used by the method of canon in music. thirdly, after according to characteristic of aesthetics in chapter three, proportion system was researched by the more objective, applicable unit in renaissance: roman foot and local unit differs meter in the present, Alberti's architectures was researched by the method of cannon in music.

  • Purpose: Groundwater heat pump (GWHP) system has high coefficient of performance than conventional air-source heat pump system and closed-loop type geothermal system. However, there is problem in long-term operation that groundwater raise at the diffusion well and reduced at the supply well. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately predict the groundwater flow, groundwater movement and control the groundwater level in the wells. In this research, in consideration of hydrogeological characteristic, groundwater level and groundwater movement were conducted analysis in order to develop the optimal design method of the two-well system using the pairing pipe. Method: For the optimum design of the two-well system, this research focused on the design method of the pairing pipe in the simulation model. Especially, in order to control the groundwater level in wells, pairing pipe between the supply well and diffusion well was developed and the groundwater level during the system operation was analyzed by the numerical simulation. Result: As the result of simulation, the groundwater level increased to -2.65m even in the condition of low hydraulic conductivity and high pumping flow rate. Consequently, it was found that the developed system can be operated stably.

  • Ever since Viollet-le-Due began to examine Gothic structural elements using his method of geometrical analysis in the nineteenth century, art and architectural historians and a few engineers have periodically attempted to ascertain the structural advantages of the various characteristic features of Gothic architecture. In none of these studies, however, has the way forces work within the lightweight and spacious masonry Gothic buildings been precisely interpreted. The approach taken by art and architectural historians has therefore tended to be primarily descriptive and to be based on intuitive assumptions. This study intend to analyze the Gothic non-vaulted nef unique(aisleless) structures of Lower Languedoc which has never been scientifically tested, and to provide as comprehensive an explanation as possible of the way in which these non-vaulted buildings work. In order to achieve this goal, this paper Is to examine, by means of finite element analysis. the links between the width of non-vaulted aisleless structures, the configuration of the arches, diaphragm arch, and the buttress. Finite element analysis with a computer provides a more accurate analysis than the methods of analysis that have been heretofore applied to Gothic structures, as well as permits us to visualize the global stress behavior of the structure. Combined with traditional methods of studying historical buildings, therefore, finite element analysis inevitably give us a broader understanding of the processes involved in the design and construction of medieval buildings.
