Gojong(高宗) had experienced extravagant change during a period of reign and he was located in the center of the change. He was the king who also experienced various changes in construction and accomplished a large number of construction activities aggressively. Gojong could acquire the information and details about anarchitecture, through the experience of a lot of large-scale construction activities in a regency period of Heungseon-Daewongun(興宣大院君). After opening of a port, as the western culture and technology was flowed in Korea, the knowledge of western architecture also was introduced. Gwanmungak(觀文閣) was constructed in Kyeongbokgung Palace under that influence in 1888, but the construction was not successfully finished. Due to the failure of Gwanmungak, Gojong no more constructed a western architecture until 1897. He was aware of the merits of western architectures while living in the western architecture during Agwanpacheon(俄館播遷). And he led a lot of constructions of the western architectures in Kyeongungung(慶運宮). It is possible to arrange in two reasons about the interest in an architecture of Gojong. Firstly, Gojong was individually interested in the architectures, and he constantly accomplished constructions of new buildings from childhood. And secondly, Gojong thought that western architecture has an advantage in the international situations. He held out the tendencies to construct the western architectures with excessive investments.

With environmental regulations continuously being strengthened internationally the need to control environmental pollution and environmental load is emerging in Korea. The purpose of this study is to seek methods or using waste cementitious powder as an alternative raw material for limestone through the optimization of raw material and to quantitatively analyze the resulting reduction of $CO_2$ emission in order to contribute to solving the issue of waste, which is the biggest issue in relation to construction and global warming. The results of the study, show that waste cementitious powder can be used as an alternative raw material for limestone at OPC level, but it was also found that mixing fine aggregate cementitious powder into waste cementitious powder significantly affected the substitution rate for limestone with waste cementitious powder and the reduction of greenhouse gas. In particular, when fine aggregate cementitious powder was used at a rate of 0~20%, the substitution rate for limestone and the reduction in the rate of greenhouse gas emission was significantly reduced. It is thought that a technique to efficiently separate and discharge the fine aggregate cementitious powder mixed in waste cementitious powder needs to be developed in the future.
The subjects of this study were limited to Silla buddhist temple remains in the 6~8th century, where the excavation survey report was published and the details of the remains of the corridor are revealed. Since the corridor completes the structure of temple and is involved in formation of the space, the building plan for corridors is thought to have an intention linked to the entire temple. Thus, more closer study is required for this construction plan to identify the role of corridors. The corridor is a building that has a low architectural hierarchy and completes the layout and composition of the temple. In the unit planning of the corridor, unit were designed to be of a certain size in the temple layout. Then, the overall scale was made by adding the fixed size of unit. The combination of corridors are the combined points of paths and were used as visual points. The structure of the corridor was constructed to be adjusted according to the size of the main compartment of the building to which it was connected and inserted under the roof of the building. The adjustment of the unit changed in the range of 0.5 to 2 of Silla's system of measurement. The usage of embedded pillar in the corridor presents a new perspective on Silla architecture.

In this study, existential thoughts in Frank Lloyd Wright's notion of nature were investigated. Wright, a modern architect, presented the idea of creating organic architecture in harmony with nature. His naturalistic romanticism is considered to be the original inspiration for his concept of organic architecture. However, his understanding of architecture in harmony with nature stems from existential ideas in his notion of nature, including humanity. The proposed study analyzes his existential beliefs through his speeches and writings in four categories-love of nature, thoughts of abstract and concrete, nature as being intrinsic and "becoming," and thoughts on science and art. Our analyses reveal that, on the one hand, Wright was inspired by thoughts of naturalistic romanticism born from his disillusionment with city life and an urge to seek life in nature, while, on the other, he also believed that real nature is intrinsic to humans and manifests itself in the very core of their being. He sought to unite humanity, as the interior of nature, with its physical environment, as the exterior of nature. His notion of nature is a "becoming" one that changes with time and space, and varies based on individual humans. In line with these thoughts, Wright sought to create forms not only with respect to mathematical dimensions, but also in consideration of human significance. He considered art and architecture to be born out of an integral thought as a process of humanization. To him, nature is interpreted by humans.
The purpose of this study is to elucidate that photo, which has been used as original photo's purpose of information transfer in modern age, is now used as romantic reproduction which is the communication methods of architect's idea and thought through photographic vision which is beyond photograph own capabilities. The photos of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier's architectural works are taken as an example for studying and analysing the way of deliverying the concept of creative work in the functional spaces in the modern era. It looked at the way of modern archirecture configuration, which architects wanted to show by pictures, such as concurrency, movement, sense of exhibition and concept of time-space and planarity on photographic vision such as multiview, movement, daily life exclusion, scenography and perspective loss. Reflecting that, I presents Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe's intention through photo by analyzing their picture of architecture by way of photograph techniques-camera position moving, over exposure, photomontage, silhouette technic and overlap technic. Mies van der Rohe and Le corbusier demonstrated the change and manipulation of the their architectural photos in different point of view. They express their architectural theories by photos of their works and overcome the limitation of expression of constructed building designed by them. The photos of architects's works in the case study with photos and descriptions introduce to their design concept. The design concept of the architects have become ideal concept for many contemporary architects and keep reproducing through the photos of their architectural works.
This study aims to clarify the architectural characteristics of three houses of Choseon Exhibition. Exposition/exhibitions were thought to be a model for the world. It shows the real status of the development, and thinking with visions at that times; therefore, exhibited house models would be a good source for what to be considered for the ideal houses of that times. Through the study, we could find out as belows. 1. The houses exhibited conserved the sitting-on-floor living style, otherwise the most proposals for house improvement suggested a chair-and-table style because of its hygienic quality and integration of the life at home and at work(school, too). 2. The spacial scheme for-family prior over for-guest was emphasized, but models at the exhibition were structured with Japanese traditional spacial program, such as Jashiki(座敷), Kyakunoma(客の間) or Tsuginoma(次の間), which were all Tatami-floored. 3. Through this exhibition, it is clarified that the architectural society in colonial Korea also tried to improve the modern housings, not only direct reception of the developed proposals. These houses was planned with the acceptance of the locality, such like Ondol, a floor heating facility which the Japanese engineer improve the efficiency. 4. Also these exhibited houses became a start to recognize a house as a product, and spurred on commercialization. As the result, we could find out that these exhibited houses accepted the modern housing proposals selectively, and that even if the exhibitions shows the advance in usual these houses were planned with the very conservative notions.
This study focuses on the staffs of the Governmental Organization of Construction who actually led this organization. Two main points of this study are as follows; 1) The composition and appointment of staffs, before and after the Korea-Japan Treaty in 1907, are evaluated, and 2) The working and academic career of each personnel are analyzed in connection with understanding of internal characteristics of this organization. Special attention is given to Korean personel and Japanese engineers who undertook a leading role. Korean engineering staffs were very few in number. It is thought, viewing their records of careers, that almost all of them didn't have any engineering basis, and simply they had some relations to Japan. It is certain that their role in this organization was interpreters using their Japanese language ability, and their roles were only limited to non-technical areas, if any. The early engineers from Japan were selected among the officials with comparatively rich careers of the Temporary Architectural Dept. or the Temporary Engineering Dept. of Custom House in Japan. But, in later days, the quality of Japanese engineers changed to the level of premature without practical experiences who unwillingly came to Korea to have a job under the depression of construction economy of Japan. The academic careers of Japanese engineers were various, from self-taught to regural college education, but the leading engineers were from Tokyo University. The civil engineers became high-level technical officials in the Government-General after the Japanese Annexation of Korea. But, sometimes later, many of the architectural engineers became practicing architect managing design offices on private basis.
Men's jewelry are thought to have a limited role as assisting women's jewelry or wedding gifts. The variety of designs are limited, and most of them are just copies of Japanese designs. In order to bring out a new kinds of variety in men's jewelry design, I have chosen architectural structures as a motif. Architectural structures have strong symbolical meanings that express man. They are powerful and challenging, and symbolize wealth and authority. Mario Botta, the wolrd famous architect is an architect with this kind of spirit. His architectural style does not lose his own color in a chaotic situation, but keeps the feeling of shape and space on the basis of locality. In this study I have started with a motif that may express specific and modem feelings by compressing the shape and spatial images of Mario Botta's structures minimally into men's jewelry in order to grope the possibilities in all aspects. I have done these in order to rediscover the beauty of the architectural structures by using the shape and spatial images that are found in Botta's structures, so that I may propose a new kind of men's jewelry with stresses on their shapes.
Through 16-17th century, Neo-Confucianism was accepted and extended to Chosun Dynasty. The architecture of the Taegae school made buildings of Yongnam area rich by adding the regional characteristics based on Taegae's thought of architecture. The following is the architectural characteristics of the academic clique around Sangju. Transformation such as separation and combination of the Jeongsa space by function, lifted floor type reflecting local feature or high platform was appeared, and the architectural characteristics of the Taegae school, that is, a small scale, a moderate figure, a type of side-attached floor, landscape, were still maintained at the same time. The characteristics of the Taegae school and regional figure of Sangju were well joined. The upper class houses, Seodang, Jeongsa and Seowon, built by Confucianist had shared common Confucian characteristics in spite of their different purposes. The world view of the Confucianism such as sacrifice for sages, cultivation, devoting for study, teaching disciples, and education for villagers was revealed through the Confucian architecture including dwelling houses during the 16-17th century. Buildings of Confucianist were focused on the space for men. Seoae and Kyumam built two different Jeongsa's inside and outside of the boundary of the nakdong river. While Seodang and Jeongsa located outside of the boundary of the river were built excluding spaces for living, the function of the Jeongsa located inside of the boundary of the river was assimilated by Sarangcahe. However, both buildings kept the function for cultivation, devoting for study and teaching.
Basic concept of this study is that architectural form as a material at present has meaning for the dweller's life on the past historical plane. Main method to recover history is ethnographic interview to dwellers. Secondary method is to analyze ancestors' writings, buildings in the background of the family photos, and past drawings and then to relate them with architectural form at present. Taxonomy is a starting point: general name of the building by outside researcher is quite different from it by inside dwellers. 'Haengrang-chae', servant quarter, has never been used for servants. Function of the haengrang went outside thatched houses at the front village. Firsthand observation or simple analyses as results of several precedent research are reexamined and criticized through this study. The mansion has moaning when we synthesize with the site location based on farming land and tenant farmer, and decline of the Kyongpo Lake. Territoriality of the mansion is reinterpreted to 'In-Out Structure' by Yin-Yang thinking, Dwellers extend buildings gradually to outside village, surrounding rear hills, the lake, DongHae Sea, and finally goes to imaginative Taoist heaven beyond real nature through the literary life. Confucius principle, known to govern upper class house at Yi Dynasty also affect general composition of the buildings: perpetuation of the family by ancestor worship, elder dominance and male dominance, fraternity love in the extended family, charity display by reception of guests, Taoist scholarly life harmonized with nature. However, the study of the particular life and usage of the dwellers reinforces or corrects general supposition of precedent researches. Unique shape of the house has been formed by convenience of the dwellers' life style, early modernized free thought over the rigid Confucius design principle, and female power in male dominant society.
