This paper investigates the development of attitudes to historic conservation from the turn of the nineteenth century when certain theoretical opinions on the protection of buildings began to be developed, through the time when the Venice Charter was established, to recent international trends in historic conservation. This paper also explores the contribution of these attitudes and ideas towards an international approach for historic conservation. This paper demonstrates that the Venice Charter is the acme of progress in the European stance towards restoration, reflecting European values of architecture and its conservation, and thus it is not sufficiently 'universal' to be unequivocally applied in non-Western countries. Secondly, recent international trends in historic conservation subvert the notions of Western cultural hegemony which have permeated global conservation practices, and accept the diversity of value criteria for heritage and its conservation in different cultural context. Thirdly, this paper argues that the conservation approaches in Asian societies need to move further into the retention and extension of the spirit and naturalistic sensibilities inherent in the architecture. Historic conservation is an expression of different cultural values attached to heritage resources by different societies. For conservation program to be effective, conservation should take place within a socio-cultural context.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the way historical heritage was dealt with during the massive urban development period of the 1960s through the case of Deoksugung Palace. The wall of Deoksugung Palace was rebuilt and relocated in 1961. Later, it was rebuilt and relocated again in 1968, and Daehanmun Gate was soon moved back too. I analyzed the opinions of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the Cultural Heritage Committee, experts and citizens that occurred during this process and reached the following conclusion. First, in 1961, the existing stone walls of Deoksugung Palace were rebuilt rather than restored and conserved for the urbanscape at the time. Second, in the 1960s, the Cultural Heritage Committee focused on the conservation of the origin of Daehanmun Gate, while citizens valued the overall harmony and function of Deoksugung Palace. Third, unlike the 1970s project led by the president to renovate national security and national defense sites, there was a call from citizens to realize the preservation of Deoksugung Palace.

In the Republic of Korea, many of the wooden architectural heritage are located in forests and, therefore, are vulnerable to termite damage. In Korea, the predominant approach to termite control involves chemical control methods using termiticides. The rapid attraction of termites to termiticides is essential to shorten the control period. The current study investigated the attraction of Korean termites to carbon dioxide and the appropriate concentration of carbon dioxide required for effective attraction by conducting a basic experiment on the attracting effect in the underground environment. The results showed that carbon dioxide is effective for attracting termites, and an effective concentration range of 10% or less was selected. Additionally, this study established the potential and applicability of carbon dioxide as an attractant in the control of subterranean termites. Future studies should aim at conducting field studies on the application of carbon dioxide to improve the termite control effect, particularly in preserving wooden architectural heritage.
Many cultural heritages for the modern ages in Korea are becoming lost rapidly as a result of subsequent technological innovation and changes in industrial structures and other reasons. But they are indispensable for an understanding of history, tradition culture of Korea, and form the basis for development and advancement of future culture at the same time. Therefore, this study is aimed to review the protection of cultural heritage in Japan, establishing the protection policies in Korea. In Japan, The Advisory Committee for the Preservation and Utilization of Modern Cultural heritage was organized by The Agency for Cultural Affairs. And this classified modern cultural heritage into four fields, as like; (1)monuments, (2)buildings, (3)fine arts and historical heritage, and (4)life, culture, and technology to pursue concrete research and study. The next step is tarrying out investigations to identify these cultural heritages, which were once the backbone of Japanese modernization and are now in the process of being lost, in an effort to preserve them as cultural heritage of the Japanese modernization period. The investigation will have conducted on an about eight year scheme starting with 1996. And it's will ask all local boards of education(of the prefectures, cities, towns, and villages throughout the country) to supply all related records or documents available and to cooperate in field studies. So now, many cultural heritages for the modern ages in Japan have been designated as Important Cultural Properties, Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, Monuments, etc. And they have been prepared various tax policy(ex, reduction of the real estate tax). Also, that's examples are not only one by one but magnified with protection of large-scale construction associated with region. In addition, magnified with region's activities. In conclusion, in the process, protection has been extended to a broader variety of cultural properties and much consideration has been given to the methods of protection in Japan.
A modern architectural building is a cultural heritage, which is also part of our history until the present. Documentation is thus considered an irreplaceable method to preserve our cultural heritage as it may be the last resort of preservation. The study analyzed the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) on the Heritage Documentation Programs of the National Park Service. Based on the analysis of the comparison and documentation of the modern architectural building implemented by the Cultural Heritage Administration, the study suggested improvement plans from three different perspectives. First, specifically detailed regulations of the legal system are supposed to be used for the implementation of the documentation of modern architectural buildings. Second, it is suggested that a general plan for continuous documentation be made. Last, by setting up a collection method, an information service needs to be provided for the public.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the contents of the cultural heritage conservation standards those have been developed throughout the century to reveal the evolution of the conservation. The analysis targets are prepared principles in response to the risks posed by armed conflicts, improper modifications, risks caused by urban planning and development, and the risk posed by environmental impacts. The study analyzed how conservation targets, issues, and conservation methods have changed. The analysis showed that the results of changed trend of conservation, first, the segmentation and diversification of the conservation targets, second, the integrated approaches, third, risk perception changes due to indirect effects from direct risk factors, forth, changes of conservation from safeguard to sustainable development.

Fumigants are used worldwide for control of biological agents that damage wooden cultural property. To establish a policy for fumigant use, biological evaluation of insects and microorganisms considering many factors is required. This study was performed to evaluate biological sensitivity and wood penetration of three fumigants applied for control of biological agents that damage wooden cultural properties in Korea. Among these, methyl bromide and ethylene oxide can control insects and fungi when exposed directly. However, they were unable to completely control biological agents within deeper parts of wood. Ethanedinitrile, which was developed as an alternative fumigant, exhibited outstanding wood penetration and biocidal efficacy. Further research involving various environmental conditions is warranted.
Many researches are actively doing for digital implementation of traditional architectural heritage using multimedia and virtual reality technologies. In addition, various attempts are progressed to utilize the digitally implemented traditional architectural heritage as "contents." Nowadays, the digitally implemented traditional architectural heritage can be displayed on through the Internet and/or many multimedia appliances by these attempts. Recently, virtual reality technology, especially augmented reality technology, begins to grab the attention for digitally implementing architectural heritage. Augmented reality is a technology that makes possible to show the overlapped contents by piling up the virtual objects on the real world. Many studies for augmented reality are progressed because it has an advantage in interacting with virtual objects and information. This study proposes the method of digital implementation of traditional architectural heritage by using augmented reality technology. We presented the method and process of digital implementation of traditional architectural heritage with augmented reality technology. Moreover, digitally implemented traditional architectural heritage with augmented reality is compared with the contents implemented by other computer technologies. We, also, presented how to utilize the traditional architectural heritage contents by using augmented reality.

Digital data was collected using modern three-dimensional digital technology. Current content-specific technologies were investigated through domestic and foreign cases so that three-dimensional digital technology could be applied to the utilization of various contents. First, the use of three-dimensional digital technology of architectural cultural assets has been changing from the restoration of cultural assets. Second, some of the contents produced were found to be underutilized. Third, the type of content has been changing in experience and exhibition, but the online approach was small. Fourth, digital restoration using domestic IT technology has been used as a technology to restore overseas cultural heritage. The fifth analysis of the relationship between the content types and 3D digital technologies shows the use of currently limited technologies. This study analyzed the status of digital architecture and the application of three-dimensional digital technologies to lay the foundation for the active development and utilization of content. Subsequent studies on various layers and digital technologies will be needed to revitalize digital architectural cultural assets in the future.
