  • Background: The flexible flatfoot is characterized by a flattening of the foot arch due to excessive bodyweight. The use of shoe insoles or taping methods has been identified as effective in realigning the navicular or calcaneus bones and addressing supination in pronated feet. Objects: This study aimed to analyze the difference between the arch taping attachment method, introduced in a previous study, and a novel taping method designed to provide support to the inner aspect of the heel bone in cases of flexible flatfoot. Methods: A navicular drop test was performed to discriminate flexible flatfoot. To analyze the differences in pressure distribution during walking for each taping method, the subjects underwent testing in the barefoot state with no attachments. The procedure included a sequence of arch taping and heel taping. Subsequent analysis of pressure distribution during walking utilized the GaitRite® system (GAITRite Gold, CIR Systems Inc.). Results: Arch taping and calcaneus taping significantly reduced the integrated pressure over time and peak pressure on the medial side of the midfoot for both feet compared to the barefoot state. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that supporting the inside of the heel through calcaneus taping, without direct stimulation to the longitudinal arch and navicular bone, is an effective intervention for flexible flatfoot.

  • In many cases, underground structures are built using conventional above-grade structural systems to carry gravity load. This paper proposes the use of underground arches, termed "buried arches", to support gravity loads, wherein the horizontal thrust of the arch is equilibrated by soil pressure. Because the horizontal soil pressure increases with depth, the depth of the arch may be reduced as the depth below grade increases. Critical to the success of such an approach is a proper accounting of creep and shrinkage for arches made of reinforced concrete. This paper addresses the influence of equilibrium, creep, and shrinkage as they affect the design of the arch from a theoretical perspective. Several examples illustrate the use of buried arches for the design of underground parking structures.

  • Steel arch supports are used in mines and underground structures to provide stability. Most of the supports are made up of overlapping arches. They can behave either yieldingly or unyieldingly. If the normal force at any point of overlapping equals the slip resistance, the slide occurs. This paper presents a solution procedure for determining the load-carrying capacity of steel arch supports in the yielding implementation. This solution considers the effects of several significant elements, including differing materials and the number of clamps in yielding friction joints. The direct stiffness method is applied. The solution contains geometric, physical, and structural nonlinearity. The results obtained from numerical modeling using the provided procedure are compared to laboratory tests conducted at GIG Katowice in 2012. They show a good correlation with previously collected data from equivalent laboratory conditions.

  • Spatial structures have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately analyze dynamic characteristics and seismic response for seismic design of spatial structure. Keel arch structure is used as an example structure because it has primary characteristics of spatial structures. In case of spatial structures with different ground condition and time lag, multiple support excitation may be subjected to supports of a keel arch structure. In this study, the response of the keel arch structure under multiple support excitation and with time lag are analyzed by means of the pseudo excitation method. Pseudo excitation method shows that the structural response is divided into two parts, ground displacement and structural dynamic response due to ground motion excitation. It is known that the seismic responses of spatial structure under multiple support excitation are different from those of spatial structure under simple excitation. And the seismic response of spatial structure with time lag are different from those of spatial structure without time lag. Therefore, it has to be necessary to analyze the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support excitation and time lag because the spatial structure supports may be different and very long span. It is shown that the seismic response of spatial structure under multiple support seismic excitation are different from those of spatial structure under unique excitation.

  • In advanced stages of periodontal disease, a lot of the periodontal tissue support are usually lost. The tissue destruction around some teeth is progressed to a level which requires either spontaneous exfoliation or extraction of several teeth due to their excessive mobility. In such cases, a comprehensive treatment plan encompassing the adequate periodontal and maintenance therapy, as well as perio-prosthetic treatment involving occlusal equilibration, is needed in order to restore health, function, and esthetics. Cross-arch fixed partial dentures(CAFPDs), one of the perio-prosthetic treatments, are used to stabilize the teeth with severely reduced periodontal tissue support. Unfortunately, however, a little is known about the occlusal scheme and biomechanical concept of CAFPDs. This paper will demonstrate summaries of the trauma from occlusion(TFO), Ante's law revisited, the treatment principles, the role of occlusion, and the long-term consequences for CAFPDs, and the possibility of CAFPDs through a case presentation.

  • Purpose: The author evaluated the clinical and radiological results after wearing the medial arch supports in children. Materials and Methods: 103 patients who had symptomatic flat feet were evaluated from march, 2002 to may 2009. All patients wore the medial arch supports according to the symptoms. We measured parameters at weight-bearing radiographs before and after medial arch support were worn. We also evaluated the clinical scores using the AOFAS score. Results: Mean age of patients was 97 months (11-204 months), all foot of patients involved bilaterally. Mean talo-first metatarsal angle of right foot was $17.7{\pm}9.4$ and left foot was $19.96{\pm}9.5$ degrees at AP radiograph in pre-wearing state. Mean calcaneal pitch angle of right foot was $12.0{\pm}5.3$ and left foot was $11.9{\pm}5.8$ degrees at lateral radiograph in pre-wearing state. Mean talo-first metatarsal angle of right foot was $14.4{\pm}8.05$ and left foot was $13.1{\pm}8.77$ degrees at AP radiograph in post-wearing state. Mean calcaneal pitch angle of right foot was $16.4{\pm}5.75$ left foot was $16.5{\pm}5.6$ degrees at lateral radiograph in post-wearing state. The radiographic angles between pre-wearing and post-wearing state were statistically significant (p<0.05). Mean pre-wearing AOFAS hindfoot score was $66.7{\pm}9.25$, midfoot score was $60.0{\pm}9.34$ forefoot score was $57.1{\pm}11.8$. Mean post-wearing AOFAS hindfoot score was $73.2{\pm}9.73$, midfoot score was $68.1{\pm}10.1$, forefoot score was $67.2{\pm}11.4$. The forefoot score was highest improving scores among the AOFAS scores. Conclusion: From our study, we concluded that medial arch support was effective for symptomatic flat feet of children in radiological and clinical results from our study.

  • This paper presents the design case of the 3-arch tunnel under Daejeon railroad station building. The original construction method was the underpinning method supported by pipe-roof, but it was changed to the mined tunnelling method because of the complex construction condition and the safety problem. This 3-arch tunnel has a width of 28 meters and a height of 10 meters. Overburden is only 23m and the ground around the tunnel is a weathered rock. The allowable settlements for the station building and some railroads are very strict. Accordingly, various measurements for the tunnel stability and the settlement minimization was applied and they were reviewed by 2-D and 3-D numerical analysis.

  • Recently, the number of shallow tunnel construction increases to improve the structural safety and environment-friendliness. In semi-cut-and-cover Method, ground is excavated to the crown arch level and arch slab is set to backfill before the excavation of lower face. In this study, laboratory model tests was performed to clarify the behavior of the arch slab constructed perpendicular to the slope. Results show that Arch slab is affected by perpendicular to the slope and bedrocks. Negative moment at the upper part of the arch slab at hillside and positive moment at the upper part at the other side are generated as perpendicular to the slope increases. Reaction load at the hillside support was larger than that at the other side.
