  • In this study, the effects of dilution on the wear behavior of PTAW (Plasma Transferred Arc Welding) Inconel 625, Inconel 718 and Stellite 6 overlays on Nimonic 80A were investigated. Inorder to evaluate the wear performance, two-body and three-body abrasive wear test, and dry sliding wear test were performed. According to wear tests, the wear rate of deposit with dilution 30% was higher than that of dilution 10% by 10%, and it was also found the plastic deformation near worn surface.

  • Coal-fired power plants have used oil as fuel for start-up but plasma burner is recently introduced in order to reduce costs. It provides fuel oil-free start-up. But at initial operation of Plasma burner, an increase in unburned carbon remains as still pending issue. Also research and operational standards for this problem are insufficient. In this paper, operating procedure will be proposed through analyzing the impact of unburned carbon in accordance with the Plasma arc current. It is also possible to contribute to the national plant industry by demonstrating economics of Plasma burner in commissioning coal-fired power plants.

  • Laser welding is obviously an attractive method to join small, thin parts such as small stainless steel tubes, but it is very sensitive to the joint clearance and tolerance, and this makes laser welding difficult to obtain consistent welding qualities over time. Recently, Plasma Augmented Laser Welding(PALW) is being developed to solve these problems. In this study, plasma arc welding(PAW) was introduced to join conventional V-grooved butt joint of thin stainless steel strips using single laser heat source in manufacturing small stainless steel tubes. The effect of the welding speed enhancement is investigated by the experiments. Effects of welding directions, distance between the heat sources and intensity of arc heat source on the optimal welding speed was investigated. Through this research, it was confirmed that PALW process has higher welding speed and robustness than laser welding process.

  • It is recognized that tetrafluoromethane ($CF_4$) has a great influence on global warming. The $CF_4$ is known to have a large impact on climate change due to its large global warming index. In this study, a waterjet plasma scrubber (WPS) was designed and manufactured for the $CF_4$ decomposition. The WPS is a novel technology which is combined a gliding arc plasma and water injection at the center of the plasma discharge. This can give an innovative way for $CF_4$ decomposition by achieving larger plasma columnand generating OH radicals. A performance analysis was achieved for the design factors such as waterjet flow rate, total gas flow rate, consumption electric power, and electrode gap. The highest $CF_4$ decomposition and energy efficiencies were 64.8% and 6.43 g/kWh, respectively; Optimal operating conditions were 20 mL/min of waterjet flow rate, 200 L/min total gas flow rate, 5.3 kW consumption electric power, and 4.4 mm electrode gap. As for the 2 stage reactor of the WPS, the $CF_4$ decomposition efficiency improved as the 85.3% while the energy efficiency decreased as the 5.57 g/kWh.

  • This paper was to study the effect to Yongrak phenomenon of I groove submerged arc welding depending on the plasma cutting surface characteristics, and how to reduce the causes and characteristics Yongrak phenomenon. Shipbuilding and marine structures is designed to use the thick plates and welded by high current to obtain deep penetration. Yongrak phenomenon has been occurred frequently depending on the quality of cutting surface and it makes degrade of the welding quality and modification of the welding. As a result, it was confirmed that I Groove plasma cutting characteristics get bevel form of 2 to 4 degrees to one side direction from the vertical position with Yongrak phenomenon. This is the main reason of Yongrak phenomenon in butt joint welding and 4 degree reverse bevel on the upper surface of base metal by submerged arc welding brought the effect of significant reduction of Yongrak phenomenon.

  • The smart design of nanocatalysts can improve the catalytic activity of transition metals on reducible oxide supports, such as titania, via strong metal-support interactions. In this work, we investigatedtwo-dimensional Pt nanoparticle/titania catalytic systems under the CO oxidation reaction. Arc plasma deposition (APD) and metal impregnation techniques were employed to achieve Pt nanoparticle deposition on titania supports, which were prepared by multitarget sputtering and sol-gel techniques. APD Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 2.7 nm were deposited on sputtered and sol-gel-prepared titania films to assess the role of the titania support on the catalytic activity of Pt under CO oxidation. In order to study the nature of the dispersed metallic phase and its effect on the activity of the catalytic CO oxidation reaction, Pt nanoparticles were deposited in varying surface coverages on sputtered titania films using arc plasma deposition. Our results show an enhanced activity of Pt nanoparticles when the nanoparticle/titania interfaces are exposed. APD Pt shows superior catalytic activity under CO oxidation, as compared to impregnated Pt nanoparticles, due to the catalytically active nature of the mild surface oxidation and the active Pt metal, suggesting that APD can be used for large-scale synthesis of active metal nanocatalysts.

  • This study was carried out experimentally on the production and properties of silicon nanopowders characteristics using a transferred type arc plasma apparatus. To investigate the properties of silicon nanopowder, the purity of argon gas(99.999%, 99.9%) and the partial pressure ratio of nitrogen gas(0~90%) were varied. The total pressure in chamber is 400Torr and the silicon chunk amount used as raw material is 300g. The power supplied to the cathode to generate arc plasma was 9~12kW/h, and the electrode was made of tungsten and graphite with a diameter of 13mm. The particle size, impurity elements and powder evaporation rate of the silicon powder were analyzed using the XRD, FE-SEM, TEM and electronic scale. According to the purity of argon gas, the silicon evaporation rate and the particle size were similar, and impurities were generated more in the case of 99.9% purity than 99.999%. When argon gas and nitrogen gas were mixed in the chamber, the silicon evaporation rate and particle size increased as the partial pressure ratio of nitrogen gas increased. In particular, when the partial pressure ratio of nitrogen gas was 80%, the silicon evaporation rate 80g/h, and the particle size was about 80~100nm.
