A Study on the Characteristics of Silicon Nanopowders Produced by Transferred Type Arc Plasma Apparatus (이송식 아크플라즈마 장치에 의해 제조된 실리콘 나노분말의 특성에 대한 연구)

  • This study was carried out experimentally on the production and properties of silicon nanopowders characteristics using a transferred type arc plasma apparatus. To investigate the properties of silicon nanopowder, the purity of argon gas(99.999%, 99.9%) and the partial pressure ratio of nitrogen gas(0~90%) were varied. The total pressure in chamber is 400Torr and the silicon chunk amount used as raw material is 300g. The power supplied to the cathode to generate arc plasma was 9~12kW/h, and the electrode was made of tungsten and graphite with a diameter of 13mm. The particle size, impurity elements and powder evaporation rate of the silicon powder were analyzed using the XRD, FE-SEM, TEM and electronic scale. According to the purity of argon gas, the silicon evaporation rate and the particle size were similar, and impurities were generated more in the case of 99.9% purity than 99.999%. When argon gas and nitrogen gas were mixed in the chamber, the silicon evaporation rate and particle size increased as the partial pressure ratio of nitrogen gas increased. In particular, when the partial pressure ratio of nitrogen gas was 80%, the silicon evaporation rate 80g/h, and the particle size was about 80~100nm.

Prediction of Cascade Performance of Circular-Arc Blades with CFD

  • Thin circular-arc blade is often used as a guide vane, a deflecting vane, or a rotating blade of low pressure axial-flow turbomachine because of its easy manufacture. Ordinary design of the blade elements of these machines is done by use of the carpet diagrams for a cascade of circular-arc blades. However, the application of the carpet diagrams is limited to relatively low cambered blade operating under optimum inlet flow conditions. In order to extend the applicable range, additional design data is necessary. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a promising method to get these data. In this paper, two-dimensonal cascade performances of circular-arc blade are widely analyzed with CFD. The results have been compared with the results of experiment and potential theory, and useful information has been obtained. Turning angle and total pressure loss coefficients are satisfactorily predicted for lowly cambered blade. For high camber angle of $67^{\circ}$, the CFD results agree with experiment for the angle of attack less than that for shockless inlet condition.

  • Recently, in the industrial applications, accurate arc control for welding machine are developed. This paper describes arc control of inverter-fed arc welding machine, and efficiency of inverter-fed arc welding machine. It is shown that the arc pressure and are stiffness of the pulse arc nay be as much as several times that of the equivalent dc are. Finally, the theoretical predictions are compared with test. The potential of such a welding machine is also described.

Shallow-depth Tilt Monitoring for Engineering Application (공학적 활용을 위한 천부지반 틸트 모니터링)

  • In recent yeaes, the collapses of man made structures have been encountered from time to time due to the deformation of the ground in korea. Furthermore, the possibilities of casasters from the ground deformation suCh as landslide and active fault are atrracting our attention to the deformation monitoring. In this study, two-coordinate tilt which was monitored during six months in order to develop tediniques for prevention of disasters from the ground deformation. The two-coordinate tilt which was detected by a tilt-sensor installed in shallow depth on the slope with the sensitivity of 0.0001 arc.sec in every 10 minutes was recorded continously to PC through the interface with 200-m line coonection. The observed digital tilt data. together with the relevant meteorological data were analyzed in reference to engineering application. During the whole observation period of six months, the net tilt is 10.06 arc.sec to the west and 73.88 arc.sec to the south. Consequently the ground has a tilt of 74.56 arc.sec to the direction of $S7.75^{\circ}W$ with average tilting of 0.02 arc.sec/hour. In spite of such fast and large tilting, it is interpreted in view of engineering aspects that the site is much safe from danger, since both East-West and North-South components of tilt converge as time goes by. Two categories of deformational events are recognized ; one is toward the direction of surface slope and the other is to the direction of increased pore pressure. Tiks are acenain to have a close relation with precipitation of rain. The daily variation of two-coordinate tilt is delayed 4.3 hours in average after the variation of atmospheric temperature. A certain correlation between atmospheric pressure and deformation might be revealed.

  • Many pressure vessels for the power plants are fabricated from low alloy ferritic steels. The inner sides of the pressure vessels are commonly weld_cladded with austenitic stainless steels to minimize problems of corrosive attack. The submerged-arc welding(SAW) process is now used in preference to other processes because of the possibilities open to automation to reduce the overaII welding times. The most reliable way to avoid underclad cracks(UCC) which are often detected at the overlap of the clad beads is to use nonsusceptible steels such as SA508 class 3. At present domestically developed forging steel of SA508 cl.S is now being cladded with single layer by using 90mm wide strip, which transfers higher heat input into the base metal compared to the conventional two layers strip cladding which has been in wide use with 30-60 mm wide strip. But the current indices for the influence of heat input on crack susceptibility are not accurate enough to express the subtle difference in crack susceptibility of the steel. Therefore, the purpose of this present study is: l) To determine UCC susceptibility on domestic forging steel, SA508 cl.S cladded with single layer by using submerged arc 90mm strip and, 2) To optimize heat input range by which the crack susceptibility could be eliminated.

  • The composite gear which is composed of involute curve and circular arc has been studied. In the vicinity of pitch point, its profile is an involute curve, and in the dedenum, a circular arc. The curve in the dedendum is generated by the circular arc of the mating gear. Though the available range between minimum and maximum radius of circular arc can be given by existing tooth profile equation, there was no formulation which relates design parameters to the desired radius. It is attempted to get the formula for the radius of circular arc as a function of design parameters, such as unwounded angle, number of teeth, module, and pressure angle. The radius of circular arc, the chordal tooth thickness at working root circle, nominal bending stress, Hertz stress and contact ratio obtained from derived formula are compared with those of the existing design criteria. And these are compared with those of involute gear.

Prediction of Anode Temperatures of Free Burning Arcs Using a Simplified Unified Model

  • Free burning arcs where the work piece acts as an anode are frequently used for a number of applications. Our investigation is exclusively concerned with a simplified unified model of arcs and anode under steady state conditions at atmospheric pressure. The model is used to make predictions of arc and anode temperatures and arc voltage for a 200 A arc in argon. The computed temperatures along the axis between the cathode tip and the anode surface compare well the measured data. This knowledge of free burning arcfeatures can play a role in developing the atmospheric plasma systems, however, further investigation should include the modelling of Cu evaporation from anode and non-LTE situation near electrodes for more realistic calculations.

  • This study presents an analytical method of solving the behaviors of arc plasma in a nozzle constricting transferred-type torch and purposes to obtain the basic data for the design of a plasma torch, which can be obtained from the temperature, pressure, velocities and voltage distributions. We have to solve some conservation equations simultaneously and need to know the exact thermal gas properties in order to obtain the correct behaviors of arc plasma. It is also necessary to give the relevant physical or geometric boundary conditions. For the simplicity of analysis, we assumed that (a) the plasma flow is laminar, (b)the local thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e. LTE, prevails over the entire arc column region. The electrode sheath effects were neglected and the nozzle area was excluded from the analysis by assuming that the current flow into the nozzle is zero. We solved the momentum transfer equation including the self-magnetic pinch effect, and obtained the temperature distribution from the energy conservation equation.   • The arc characteristics have influences on the current interruption phenomena in the regimes of low current as well as high current. It is very important to understand the arc characteristics for the initial design of a circuit breaker. This article describes the theoretical analysis of the arc characteristics by means of arc energy integral method when convection dominated low current arcs are produced in the dual-nozzle air and $SF_6$ gas flows of a model interrupter. The arc radius, average electric field strength and arc voltage have been investigated at the current range of 60 to 230 A and at the upstream pressure of 0.6 MPa in both air and SF6 gas. The results have been compared to show the difference of both gases and the trends similar to those of other investigations.

  • It is often occurred that exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine should be bent due to some geometrical constraints. Especially for automobiles most of exhaust pipes of engines have curvature to avoid rear axles. In this paper effects of pipe curvature on the exhaust noise of a diesel engine have been studied experimentally. Experiments were carried out on a 4-cycle, 2164cc diesel engine. Two types of curvature, circular arc and retangle, were tested. Sound pressure level (SPL) and power spectrum of the exhaust noise were measured by inserting bent pipes of different curvature dimensions into the exhaust pipe at various engine operating conditions. The following results were obtained from this study. Among the engine operating conditions the exhaust noise was affected mainly by engine revolution speed. The noise was reduced by the circular arc bent pipe. The effectiveness of an arc bent pipe on the noise reduction was dominated by its arc angle and the maximum noise reduction was obtained by the angle of 180.deg.. But the noise reduction could not be obtained by the rectangular bent pipe, and at high engine speed the noise was rather increased due to turbulence of exhaust gas.
