The characteristics of hydrogen storage have been investigated in the Ti-Cr-Mo and Ti-Cr-V ternary alloys with bcc structure. The alloys were melted by arc furnace and remelted 4-5 times for homogeneity. The lattice parameters, microstructures and phases of the alloys were examined by SEM, EDX and XRD, and the Pressure-Composition isotherms of the alloys were measured. From these data the relationship of the maximum and effective hydrogen storage capacities vs. chemical composition, lattice parameter and the radius of tetrahedral site were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that all of these alloy, in the range of the this study, had mainly bcc solid solutions with small amount of Ti segregation due to a lower melting point of Ti compared with other elements. Lattice parameters of the alloys were very near to the atomic average values of lattice parameters of the constituent elements. It was also found that maximum hydrogen storage capacities of the Ti-Cr-Mo alloys increased with increasing Ti content and the radius of tetrahedral site but the effective hydrogen storage capacities decreased after showing the maximum. The hydrogen storage capacities of the Ti-Cr-V alloys were almost same even though the V contens were quite different from alloy to alloy and this could be attributed to the almost same Ti/Cr ratio of the alloys. The maximum effective hydrogen storage capacity of the Ti-Cr-Mo alloys was revealed at Ti content of about 40${\sim}$50 at% and radius of tetrahedral site of 0.43${\sim}$0.45 nm. The Ti-Cr-V alloys showed the hydrogen storage capacities of 3.0 wt% and effective hydrogen storage capacities of 1.5 wt%.

Binary alloys, $MoRu_3$ and $MoRh_3$, have been prepared using arc melting furnace. Mo and the noble metals Ru and Rh are the constituents of metallic insoluble residues, which were found in the early days of the post-irradiation studies on uranium oxide fuels. Detailed structural informations about these alloys have not been reported on JCPDS files of ICDD (International Centre for Diffraction Data). The results of X-ray diffraction study showed that the alloy was crystallized in hexagonal close-packing, well known as ${\varepsilon}$-phase. The X-ray diffraction patterns of these alloys matched well to that of $WRh_3$ with $P6_3/mmc$ of space group. The lattice parameters, a and c, were calculated using the least squares extrapolation. It was found from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic measurements that Mo on the surface of the alloy was oxidized to Mo(6+), which could be removed by sputtering with Ar ions for approximately 15 minutes. The changes in binding energy of Mo, Ru, and Rh on the surface of the alloy were not observed. Magnetic susceptibility measurements resulted in the typical Pauli-paramagnetic behavior in the temperature range of 2 to 300 K.
The stabilizing characteristics of heavy metals in the silicate glass (SD), borosilicate glass (BD), and leadsilicate glass (PD) containing Electric Arc furnace (EAF) dust were studied by the Toxic Characterization Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Also, the dependence of the amount of EAF dust upon structural changes of SD, BD, and PD glasses and the TCLP results were investigated by the XRD and FT-IR spectroscopy. In the XRD results, all of SD, BD, and PD specimens containing dust up to 30 wt% were amorphous without crystallizing. In the TCLP test, the concentration of heavy metals leached from the glasses increased with the amount of EAF dust added. The SD specimen series showed the lowest heavy metal leaching and the heavy metal leachate of the PD specimens were lower than those of the BD specimens. But, the Pb leaching from the PD specimens was the highest in the PD glass composition due to the high Pb content. The value of oxygen/network former ratio could be used to compare the chemical durability within the same glass series, but not proper to do between the different glass series. Adding the EAF dust to the SD mother glass, decreased the Si-O-Si symmetry and increased the non-bridging oxygen, which weakened the structure and decreased the chemical durability of glasses. In the BD series glasses, the addition of EAF dust caused the structural changes from tetra-borate group to di-borate group and the formation of the 2-dimensional layer structure of pyre- and ortho- borate, which decreased the chemical durability of glasses. It is concluded that SD series glass among the 3 kinds of glasses is the most effective to stabilize the heavy metals of EAF dust.

Microstructure and chemical analysis of sintered bricks containing recycled wastes were investigated by SEM and EDS. The recycled wastes for which substitute ceramic raw materials were EAF (electric arc furnace) dust, fly ash and stone ash. Yellowish and brownish regions on the surface and brownish and blackish regions in the inside of bricks were observed. Main component of yellowish region on the surface turned out to be Zn. No chemical difference between the black-core region and brownish matrix. Mullite crystallites of 1 fm size were distributed in the inside of bricks and enclosed by glass phases. It seems that alumine-silicate mixtures of kaolin and fly ash were transformed to mullite crystallites during the sintering. Relatively large pores ot several ten fm size were observed in the black-core region in the inside of bricks. The main components of the inside of brick were Al and Si. The minor components were C, Na, Mg, K, Ca, and Fe. Particularly, the precipitates of Fe-rich crystallites were observed in the amorphous matrix. These precipitates were formed due to the local reduction atmosphere in the inside of bricks. Zn-rich covers were found on the surface of bricks because Zn diffused from the inside of bricks to the surface under the reduction atmosphere.
In the electric arc furnace process, the chemical energy such as the heat of oxidation reaction and the heat of carbon combustion etc. is consumed as 30% of the total input energy. In order to reduce $CO_2$ emission in EAF, it is necessary to decrease the use of electric power energy during scrap melting stage and increase the use of chemical energy. In general, when the carbon materials is individually charged into the molten steel, the carbon materials floated to the slag layer due to low density before it is dissolved in molten steel. When the concentration of carbon in the molten steel is high, the combustion energy of carbon by oxygen injection can lower the electric power energy and improve the chemical energy consumption. Therefore, an efficient charging methods of carbon material is required to increase the efficiency of carbon combustion heat. On the other hand, Al-dross, which is known as a by-product after Al smelting, includes over 25 mass% of metallic Al, and the oxidation heats of Al is lager than that of carbon. However, the recycling ratio fo Al-dross was very low and is almost landfilled. In order to effectively utilize the heats of oxidation of Al in Al-dross, it is necessary to study the application of Al-dross in the steel process. In this study, the dissolution efficiency of carbon and aluminum in molten steel was investigated by varying the reaction temperature and the mixing ratios of coke and Al-dross.

Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the emissions characteristics of total particulate matter (TPM), fine dust (PM10, PM2.5), and gaseous pollutants (SOx, NOx) in iron and steel manufacturing facilities in order to investigate emissions factors suitable for domestic conditions. Methods: Total particulate matter (TPM), fine dust (PM10, PM2.5), and gas phase materials were investigated at the outlet of electric arc furnace facilities using a cyclone sampling machine and a gas analyzer. Results: The concentrations of TPM ranged from 1.64 to 3.14 mg/Sm3 and the average was 2.47 mg/Sm3. Particulate matter 10 (PM10) averaged 1.49 mg/Sm3 with a range of 0.92 to 1.99 mg/Sm3, and the resulting ratio of PM10 to TPM was around 60 percent. PM2.5/PM10 ranged from 33.7 to 47.9% and averaged 41.6%. Sulfur oxides (SOx) were not detected, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) averaged 6.8 ppm in the range of 5.50 to 8.67 ppm. TPM emission coefficients per product output were in the range of 0.60 to 1.26 g/kg, 0.13 to 0.79 g/kg for PM10 and 0.12 to 0.36 g/kg for PM2.5, and showed many differences from the emissions coefficients previously announced. An emissions coefficient for NOx is not currently included in the domestic notices, but the results were calculated to be 0.42 g/kg per product output. Conclusions: Investigation and research on emissions coefficients that can reflect the characteristics of various facilities in Korea should be conducted continuously, and the determination and application of unique emissions coefficients that are more suitable for domestic conditions are needed.

This study estimated the possibility of phosphate removal characteristics to utilize EAF(electric arc furnace) slag as submarine cover material. The major phosphate removal mechanism was a certain formation of HAP precipitation occurred by the ionization reaction between $Ca^{2+}$ and $OH^-$, which were leached from the EAF Slag. Another phosphate removal mechanism was the adsortion of EAF slag surface. As a result of $PO_4{^-}-P$ removal characteristics using continuous column reactor, $PO_4{^-}-P$ concentration decreased rapidly after 3 days and 10 days later, it show under 0.5 ppm. The result as applied in real sea water, shows that the phosphate removal effects were 93~98% by the subaqueous sediment removal using the EAF slag. In conclusion, EAF slag is useful in $PO_4{^-}-P$ removal and control and it is possible to use without additional process like crush and selection.
It is known that polymer concretes are 8~10 times more expensive than ordinary Portland cement concretes; therefore, in the production of polymer concrete products, it is very important to reduce the amount of polymer binders used because this occupies the most of the production cost of polymer concretes. In order to develop a technology for the reduction of polymer binders, smooth and spherical aggregates were prepared by the atomizing technology using the oxidation process steel slag (electric arc furnace slag, EAFS) and the reduction process steel slag (ladle furnace slag, LFS) generated by steel industries. A reduction in the amount of polymer binders used was expected because of an improvement in the workability of polymer concretes as a result of the ball-bearing effect and maximum filling effect in case the polymer concrete was prepared using the smooth and spherical atomized steel slag instead of the calcium carbonate (filler) and river sand (fine aggregate) that were generally used in polymer concretes. To investigate physical properties of the polymer concrete, specimens of the polymer concrete were prepared with various proportions of polymer binder and replacement ratios of the atomized reduction process steel slag. The results showed that the compressive strengths of the specimens increased gradually along with the higher replacement ratios of the atomized steel slag, but the flexural strength showed a different maximum strength depending on the addition ratio of polymer binders. In the hot water resistance test, the compressive strength, flexural strength, bulk density, and average pore diameter decreased; but the total pore volume and porosity increased. It was found that the polymer concrete developed in this study was able to have a 19% reduction in the amount of polymer binders compared with that of the conventional product because of the remarkable improvement in the workability of polymer concretes using the spherical atomized oxidation steel slag and atomized reduction steel slag instead of the calcium carbonate and river sand.
The effects of $Al_2$O$_3$ addition upon the sintering range of clay-EAF dust (the specified wastes produced from steel making process) system body which would be used as a constructing bricks were investigated. The slope of apparent density to sintering temperature decreased for Clay-dust body containing 5~15 wt% A1203 sintered at 1200-125$0^{\circ}C$, and the absorption(%) of specimen sintered above 125$0^{\circ}C$ decreased due to the formation of open pores produced by pore bloating. For the specimen without any $Al_2$O$_3$ addition sintered at 1275$^{\circ}C$, the major phase was cristobalite, the small amount of mullite (3Al$_2$O$_3$ 2SiO$_2$) formed and the hematite (Fe$_2$O$_3$) remained. In the Clay-dust system body containing $Al_2$O$_3$ 15 wt%, however, the cristobalite disappeared and the major phase was mullite. Also the part of $Al_2$O$_3$ reacted with hematite to form hercynite (FeAl$_2$O$_4$). From the these results, addition of $Al_2$O$_3$ to Clay-dust system body enlarges a sintering range; decreasing an apparent density and absorption slop to sintering temperature owing to consumption of liquid phase SiO$_2$ at higher temperature and gas-forming component Fe$_2$O$_3$ at reduced atmosphere which would decrease an amount of liquid formed and increase the viscosity of the liquid produced during the sintering process.
