  • Plasma arc welding(PAW) technology is a proven process that has already been adopted by other industrial fields and recently has been considered to join the tank structure of LNG carrier. The purpose of this study is to introduce PAW process for the root welding of stainless steel pipes instead of TIG welding. There are distinctive features of the PAW compared to TIG welding; higher energy density that can increase welding speed by more than twofold, and longer arc length that can be controlled to trace seam line easily because of allowable gap between workpiece and torch. However, PAW process is also very sensitive to the root gap and misalignment due to the characteristics of long and narrow arc shape. So, we have done various experiments to establish the allowable fit-up condition by changing welding parameters including arc length, with or without filler metal, groove shape, and obtained satisfactory result.

  • Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) use bulk electrical energy to create heat in metal refining industries. The electric arc process is a main cause of the degradation of the electric power quality such as voltage flicker due to the interaction of the high demand currents of the load with the supply system impedance. The stochastic models have described the aperiodic physical phenomena of EAFs. An alternative approach is to include deterministic chaos in the characterization of the arc currents. In this parer, a chaotic approach to such modeling is described and justified. At the same time, a DLL(Dynamic Link Library) module, which is a FORTRAN interface with TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems), is developed to implement the chaotic load model in the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The details of the module and the results of tests performed on the module to verify the model and to illustrate its capabilities are presented in this paper.

  • Electrical current always travels through the minimum resistance path. In this paper, we are studied on the direction and formation of carbonized conductive path according to surface leakage between electrodes. The analysis of characteristics of the arc discharge as surface is broken down between exposed live parts. Using the HSIS(high speed imaging system, 100,000fps, redlake ltd., USA), it took photographs by arc growth mechanism occurred in on/off surge, ground fault and discharge between electrodes. Therefore, it recommended for results of technology development and application such as theoretic verification of an arc direction and economic security according to a technology about connecting arc generation in surfaces of insulators. Hereafter, it expected effects that application of energy utility technology through the arc control.

  • Zinc oxide based thin films have been extensively studied in recent several years because they have very interesting properties and zinc oxide is non-poisonous, abundant and cheap material. ZnO films are employed in different applications like transparent conductive layers in solar cells, protective coatings and so on. Wide industrial application of the ZnO films requires of development of cheap, effective and scalable technology. Typically used technologies don't completely satisfy the industrial requirements. In the present work, we studied effect of the deposition parameters on the structure and properties of ZnO films deposited by DC arc plasmatron. The varied parameters were gas flow rates, precursor composition, substrate temperature and post-deposition annealing temperature. Vapor of Zinc acetylacetone was used as source materials, oxygen was used as working gas and argon was used as the cathode protective gas and a transport gas for the vapor. The plasmatron power was varied in the range of 700-1500 watts. Flow rate of the gases and substrate temperature rate were varied in the wide range to optimize the properties of the deposited coatings. After deposition films were annealed in the hydrogen atmosphere in the wide range of temperatures. Structure of coatings was investigated using XRD and SEM. Chemical composition was analyzed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Sheet conductivity was measured by 4-point probe method. Optical properties of the transparent ZnO-based coatings were studied by the spectroscopy. It was shown that deposition by a DC Arc plasmatron can be used for low-cost production of zinc oxide films with good optical and electrical properties. Increasing of the oxygen content in the gas mixture during deposition allow to obtain high-resistive protective and insulation coatings with high adhesion to the metallic surface.

  • Ruby single crystals of 6-7 mm in dialneter and 20-25 mm in length were grown by the xenon-arc type floating zone method using a self-designed FZHY1, Calcination and sintering conditions were investigated and optimum growth conditions were established for controlling the factors such as growth rates, rotation speeds and cooling rates. Also the available energy levels of $Cr^{3+}$ were calculated from transmission data. The growth direction of the crystals was [1010] direction identified by Laue back reflection pattern. The distribution of refractive indices on the wafer of the grown crystals was homogeneous except for the edges of the wafer. The crystals could be used as a laser material with a wavelength of 693 nm and a metastate level.

  • $CF_4$ removal characteristics were investigated using an elongated arc reactor. The advantage of the elongated arc reactor includes direct use of treated gas as plasma operating gas and the enhancement of the removal reaction by using a thermo-chemistry and a plasma induced chemistry at the same time. Geometrical configurations, such as the length of the reactor and the shape of a throat, were tested to get an optimized removal efficiency with low power consumption. As results, over 95% of $CF_4$ removal was obtained with 300 lpm of total flowrate for various $CF_4$ concentration (0.1~1%). Corresponding specific energy density (SED), which means required electrical energy to treat the unit volume of treated gas, is about 3.5 kJ/L, The present technique can be applied to real applications by satisfying three major concerns, those are the high flowrate of treated gas, high removal efficiency (> 95%), and low power consumption (< 10 kJ/L).

  • In this study, API-X100 steel pipes were welded with various kinds of welding wires in the laser-arc hybrid welding process. 10kW fiber laser source was combined to MIG arc welding process. API X-100 steel of base metal was of 16.9mm thickness, and butt welding applied. After welding, full penetration weld was acquired by 1-pass welding. A root porosity and the lack of fusion was observed in some welding conditions. By the mixing the melted wire, acicular ferrite, polygonal ferrite, pro-eutectoid, aligned side plate, and bainite structures were observed at the weld metal. From the observation of hybrid weld, unmixed zone had more Ni and Cr. The unmixed zone was a 1/3 area of the weld metal. As the mechanical test of the hybrid welding, tensile test and impact test applied. From the tensile test, all of the welding except SM70S was fractured at the base metal. The result of the impact test at -30 degree C led 60J~320J of the absorbed energy. The result of the low-absorbed energy might be from the coarse equiaxed structures of the weld metal.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the optimal condition of the syngas production by reforming of propane using Gliding arc plasma reformer. The gliding arc plasma reformer in 3 phases has been newly designed and developed with a quick starting and fast response time. It can be applicable to the various types of fuels (Hydrocarbons $C_xH_y$), and it has a high conversion rate of fuels and high production of hydrogen. The parametric screening studies were carried out according to the changes of a steam feed amount i.e., steam/carbon ratio, total gas flow rate and input electric power. The optimum operating conditions were S/C ratio 2.8, total gas flow rate of 14 L/min and input electric power of 2.4 kW. The result of optimum operating conditions showed the 55 % $H_2$, 14 % CO, 15 % $CO_2$, 10 % $C_3H_8$ and 4 % $CH_4$. Also, $C_3H_8$ conversion, $H_2$ yield and $H_2$ selectivity were 90 %, 42 %, 15 %, respectively. The energy efficiency and specific energy requirements were 37 % and 334 kJ/mol respectively.

  • This paper was described on investigation to prevent porosity in high speed MIG Welding of Al 6082-T6. Porosity measurement was carried out by using image analysis of micrographs with the help of an analysis software. The main parameter was arc length and torch progressive angle. The porosity ratio was increased as arc length was increased. The arc length was increased depending upon the output voltage. By proper selection of pulse waveform parameter, the stable arc of one pulse one drop was generated. The porosity ratio of optimum condition in one pulse one drop was lower than high voltage condition. When torch progressive angle was an angle of advance $10^{\circ}$, porosity ratio was minium.
