  • Electrode erosion is indispensable for atmospheric plasma systems, as well as for switching devices, due to the high heat flux transferred from arc plasmas to contacts, but experimental and theoretical works have not identified the characteristic phenomena because of the complex physical processes. Our investigation is concerned with argon free-burning arcs with anode erosion at atmospheric pressure by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. We are also interested in the energy flux and temperature transferring to the anode with a simplified unified model of arcs and their electrodes. In order to determine two thermodynamic quantities such as temperature and pressure and flow characteristics we have modified Navier-Stokes equations to take into account radiation transport, electrical power input and the electromagnetic driving forces with the relevant Maxwell equations. From the simplified self-consistent solution the energy flux to the anode can be derived.

  • In this paper, we describe how to represent hand witten decimal digits by a sequence of one to five fuzzy sets. Each fuzzy set represents an arc segment of the digit and is a Cartesian product of four fuzzy sets; the first is fur the arc length of the segment, the second is for the arc direction, the third is fur the arc shape, and the fourth is a crisp number indicating whether it has a junction point and if it has an end point of a stroke. We show that an arbitrary pair of these sequences representing two different digits is mutually disjoint. We also show that various forms of a digit written in different styles can be represented by the same sequence of fuzzy sets and hence the deviations due to different writers can be modeled by using these fuzzy sets.

  • The discharge characteristics of a prototype ion source was investigated, which was developed and upgraded for the NBI (Neutral Beam Injection) heating system of KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research). The ion source was designed for the arc discharge of magnetic bucket chamber with multi-pole cusp fields. The ion source was discharged by the emission-limited mode with the control of filament heating voltage. The maximum ion density was 4 times larger than the previous discharge controlled by a space-charge-limited mode with fully heated filament. The plasma (ion) density and arc current were proportional to the filament voltage, but the discharge efficiency was inversely proportional to the operating pressure of hydrogen gas. The maximum ion density and arc current were obtained with constant arc voltage ($80{\sim}100V$), as $8{\times}10^{11}cm^{-3}$ and 1200 A, respectively. The estimated maximum beam current was about 35 A, extracted by the accelerating voltage of 80kV.

  • In this paper, the analysis of the gas flow in the GCB is presented by using the modified FLIC method and the arc model. The modified FLIC method has two step calculation procedure. And it adopts the upwind scheme, which results in the stability.[1] The arc model used in this paper makes arc a heating source in the energy equation. The heating source is composed of ohmic heating and radiation energy transfer. And the type of the GCB in this paper is a auto-expansion type.[2]

  • In this study, Mitigation of Potential-induced degradation (PID) for PERC solar cells using SiO2 Structure of ARC layer. The conventional PID test was conducted with a cell-level test based on the IEC-62804 test standard, but a copper PID test device was manufactured to increase the PID detection rate. The accelerated aging test was conducted by maintaining 96 hours with a potential difference of 1000 V at a temperature of 60℃. As a result, the PERC solar cell of SiO2-Free ARC structure decreased 22.11% compared to the initial efficiency, and the PERC solar cell of the Upper-SiO2 ARC structure decreased 30.78% of the initial efficiency and the PID reliability was not good. However, the PERC solar cell with the lower-SiO2 ARC structure reduced only 2.44%, effectively mitigating the degradation of PID. Na+ ions in the cover glass generate PID on the surface of the PERC solar cell. In order to prevent PID, the structure of SiNx and SiO2 thin films of the ARC layer is important. SiO2 thin film must be deposited on bottom of ARC layer and the surface of the PERC solar cell N-type emitter to prevent surface recombination and stacking fault defects of the PERC solar cell and mitigated PID degradation.

  • Because of the rapid increase of energy consumption, we have some problems such as environmental pollution, global warming, the oil shocks, and so on. To solve these problems, concern about renewable energy such as solar energy, wind force, and water energy is continuously increasing. America, Europe, and Japan have developed a system that manage and utilize the information of the renewable energy resources. However, in the domestic, renewable energy information system was not effectively built yet. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a renewable energy information system, which store and manage solar radiation energy data. We implemented the system using ArcView GIS. Also the system is able to retrieve the information from the energy database through various spatiotemporal queries. In addition, user can identify the results of summary data in the form of chart, graph, and counter line. The implemented system is supplied to the user through the web by ArcIMS.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this work was to investigate the dosimetric impact of mixed energy partial arc technique on prostate cancer VMAT. Materials and Methods: This study involved prostate only patients planned with 70Gy in 30 fractions to the planning target volume (PTV). Femoral heads, Bladder and Rectum were considered as oragan at risk (OARs). For this study, mixed energy partial arcs (MEPA) were generated with gantry angle set to 180°~230°, 310°~50° for 6MV arc and 130°~50°, 310°~230° for 15MV arc. Each arc set the avoidance sector which is gantry angle 230°~310°, 50°~130° at first arc and 50°~310° at second arc. After that, two plans were summed and were analyzed the dosimetry parameter of each structure such as Maximum dose, Mean dose, D2%, Homogeneity index (HI) and Conformity Index (CI) for PTV and Maximum dose, Mean dose, V70Gy, V50Gy, V30Gy, and V20Gy for OARs and Monitor Unit (MU) with 6MV 1 ARC, 6MV, 10MV, 15MV 2 ARC plan. Results: In MEPA, the maximum dose, mean dose and D2% were lower than 6MV 1 ARC plan(p<0.0005). However, the average difference of maximum dose was 0.24%, 0.39%, 0.60% (p<0.450, 0.321, 0.139) higher than 6MV, 10MV, 15MV 2 ARC plan, respectively and D2% was 0.42%, 0.49%, 0.59% (p<0.073, 0.087, 0.033) higher than compared plans. The average difference of mean dose was 0.09% lower than 10MV 2 ARC plan, but it is 0.27%, 0.12% (p<0.184, 0.521) higher than 6MV 2 ARC, 15MV 2 ARC plan, respectively. HI was 0.064±0.006 which is the lowest value (p<0.005, 0.357, 0.273, 0.801) among the all plans. For CI, there was no significant differences which were 1.12±0.038 in MEPA, 1.12±0.036, 1.11±0.024, 1.11±0.030, 1.12±0.027 in 6MV 1 ARC, 6MV, 10MV, 15MV 2 ARC, respectively. MEPA produced significantly lower rectum dose. Especially, V70Gy, V50Gy, V30Gy, V20Gy were 3.40, 16.79, 37.86, 48.09 that were lower than other plans. For bladder dose, V30Gy, V20Gy were lower than other plans. However, the mean dose of both femoral head were 9.69±2.93, 9.88±2.5 which were 2.8Gy~3.28Gy higher than other plans. The mean MU of MEPA were 19.53% lower than 6MV 1 ARC, 5.7% lower than 10MV 2 ARC respectively. Conclusion: This study for prostate radiotherapy demonstrated that a choice of MEPA VMAT has the potential to minimize doses to OARs and improve homogeneity to PTV at the expense of a moderate increase in maximum and mean dose to the femoral heads.

  • In Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, many genes encoded within Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 (SPI1) are required to induce intestinal/diarrheal disease. In this study, we compared the expression of four SPI1 genes (hilA, invF, prgH, and sipC) under shaking and standing culture conditions and found that the expression of these genes was highest during the transition from the exponential to stationary phase under shaking conditions. To identify regulators associated with the stationary phase-dependent activation of SPI1, the effects of selected regulatory genes, including relA/spoT (ppGpp), luxS, ihfB, hfq, and arcA, on the expression of hilA and invF were compared under shaking conditions. Mutations in the hfq and arcA genes caused a reduction in hilA and invF expression (more than 2-fold) in the early stationary phase only, whereas the lack of ppGpp and IHF decreased hilA and invF gene expression during the entire stationary phase. We also found that hfq and arcA mutations caused a reduction of hilD expression upon entry into the stationary phase under shaking culture conditions. Taken together, these results suggest that Hfq and ArcA regulate the hilD promoter, causing an accumulation of HilD, which can trigger a stationary phase-dependent activation of SPI1 genes under shaking culture conditions.

  • A cathodic arc with beam filter is employed for the deposition of metallic and hydrogen-free amorphous carbon films. A solenoid filter is used to prevent macropaticles and nonionized atoms from reaching the substrate. The detail transport characters of the filter are presented in the paper. With an optmum filter arrangement we are able to obtain a filter output of 18.4% of the total number of ions produced by the vacuum arc discharge. The deposited amorphous cabon thin film contains no hydrogen and a high fraction of $sp^3$ is determined by XPS. A dense Ti film deposited on H13 steel improves the corrosion resistance of the H13 steel and significant improvements of corrosion resistance were observed by implanting Ti, C in the film.
