  • Upon checking 'Illustrated Flora of Korea' which was published in 1980, there were more than ca. 150 apparently invalid names for the Korean plants, which were nomen nudum as well as new combinations or avowed substitutes by T. B. Lee. These names were based on previously and invalidly published names from 'Handbook of Korean Forestry Sciences' and 'An Enumeration of Plants Hitherto Known from Corea'. We consider it useful to summarize the results of this investigation and these invalid names of Korean plants were enlisted here. These invalid names should not be used any more even as synonyms in the literatures.

  • The aim of this research was to investigate the antibacterial activity of Clerodendron trichotomum. Antibacterial activities of the n-hexane, methylene chloride (MC), ethyl acetate, and n-butanol fractions from C. trichotomum were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Helicobacter pylori. The n-hexane and MC fractions showed antibacterial activity against H. pylori at a concentration of 1.7 mg/mL and showed inhibition zones of 10 and 11 mm in disc assay, respectively. Further testing of 22-dehydroclerosterol and ${\beta}$-amyrin (each 3.4 mg/mL) from the MC fraction of C. trichotomum revealed moderate antibacterial effects against E. coli, S. aureus, and H. pylori. In particular, ${\beta}$-amyrin showed clear zones of 12 and 13 mm against E. coli and H. pylori, respectively, suggesting its potential as an antibacterial agent. The active compounds from C. trichotomum might provide a promising therapeutic agent against infections by E. coli, S. aureus, and H. pylori.

  • This study is to provide basic data on ecology and morpho-pedo milieu by analyzing diatom and grain size of Mt. Jeombong forest wetland. Sample was collected from 6 points and named sample 943, 932, 885, 881A, 881b, 849. Sample 934 could not identify diatom, and the soil layer was colluvium deposited by mass-movement process. Layer of sample 932 was developed in the lower velocity environment, and presence frequence of complete diatom was very low. Hydrological situation of sample 855 was analysed in oligosaprobien environments. Sample 881A was meso-saprobic environments, velocity was slow area that inhabit musci bryopsida and sphaerocarpus. Sample 881B was acidic wetland in oligosaprobien environments. Sample 849 was analysed in oligosaprobien environments. The results of soil and diatom analysis are well reflect on wet environments of mountain wetlands and also it will expected to be in the help of environmental changes study of mountain wetlands.

  • The major aim of this work is the research of secondary metabolites isolated from the aerial parts of Petasites japonicus. The plant material is extracted with a polar solvent, which is 95% by volume methanol at room temperature. The concentrated extract was partitioned as EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$ fractions. From the EtOAC and n-BuOH fraction, two bakkenolides and two caffoylquinic acid were isolated using the Diaion HP-20, silica gel, ODS-A, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. According to the results of the results of physico-chemical and spectroscopic data including NMR, MS and UV. The chemical structures of the compounds were respectively determined as bakkenolide B (1), bakkenolide D (2), 1,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3), and 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (4). These results suggest that the compounds isolated from the aerial parts of this plant were almost identical with known components of Petasites japonicus. However, it is necessary to investigate more about the difference of amounts of constituents according to harvest area and time.

  • This study was performed to isolate and identify the orchid mycorrhizal fungi (OMF) from roots of five species of terrestrial orchids in Korea; Cymbidium goeringii, Spiranthes sinensis, Calanthe discolor, Bletilla striata, Pogonia minor. DNA was extracted from isolated OMF and ITS region was amplified using primers, ITS1-OF and ITS4-OF. Four species of OMF belong to Tulasnellaceae and Sebacinaceae were identified; Tulasnella calospora, Tulasnella irregularis, Tulasnella sp., Sebacina vermifera.

  • To search for the aldose reductase (AR) inhibitors from Korean folk plants, the inhibition of rat lens AR in vitro using the methanol (MeOH) extracts from Korean folk plants was investigated. Among fifty four Korean folk plants tested, the MeOH extract of Cedrela sinensis showed highest inhibition of AR ($IC_{50}$ value, 2.52 ${\mu}g/ml$). The plant C. sinensis has a possibility of new natural resources for the development of AR inhibitor for the prevention of diabetic complications.

  • We used enzyme electrophoresis to evaluate genetic diversity in five populations of endemic ash, Fraxinus chiisanensis in Korea. Of 15 putative allozyme loci examined 26.7% were polymorphic and expected heterozygosity for the species was low (0.082). Within the range, population were highly differentiated ($F_{ST}$=0.356) and little genetic variation was explained by geography. The pattern of distribution of variation showed low genetic variation within populations and pronounced divergence among populations, which was consistent with the prediction for the effects of limited gene flow and local genetic erosion. Although the frequencies of male plants were dominant ranging from 79.3% to 89.4%, most mating events seems to be inevitable mating between relatives in small populations based on heterozygote deficiency of this species. Small effective population size and the limited dispersal contributed to the low rates of gene flow within as well as between populations.

  • Eleocharis parvula (Roem. & Schult.) Bluff, Nees & Schauer (Cyperaceae), was found in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon Metropolitan City in Korea. This species is distinguished from related taxa in Korea by its small fusiform tubers, culms without septa when dry, 3-fid stigmas and style base confluent with the apex of achene. This taxon was named 'Gaet-ba-neul-gol' in Korean based on its habitat. We provide its description, illustrations, photographs and a key to the related taxa in Korea.

  • Hosta 'Yellow Tiara' was induced using methyle methane sulfonate (MMS) to obtain mutagens. Among the induced leaf-variegated hosta plants, some with yellow-green leaves were selected. They were cultivated via vegetative propagation. Assessment of the botanical characteristics was conducted for three years since 2004. The major characteristic of these cultivars is that they maintain their yellow-green leaves uniformly all year round. These cultivars are useful as materials for pot plants or as ground cover.

  • The genus Ochrolechia is a widespread, lichen genus in Korea. Despite being common, little is known about the species diversity and geographical distribution of Ochrolechia. In this study, we detailed the identification procedure of the genus Ochrolechia in a Korean collection and provided the description of each species. Using 104 specimens collected from 2003 to 2017, we identified four species of the genus Ochrolechia via morphological and/or molecular phylogenetic analysis: O. parellula, O. trochophora, O. yasudae and O. akagiensis. Among them, O. akagiensis had not been previously reported in Korea. Moreover, the species identified as O. frigida and O. tartarea in past studies were corrected as O. yasudae and O. parellula, respectively, based on morphological and/or molecular evidence. Phylogenetic analysis using the internal transcribed spacer regions including 5.8S rRNA gene showed that the four species separated clearly, indicating that the morphological identification corresponds to the phylogenetic identification. We provide a taxonomic key for the four species of the genus Ochrolechia.
