Experimental and computational studies were performed to determine the effects of different blade designs on a flow pattern inside a double-spindle counter rotating mower deck. In the experimental study, two different blade models were tested by measuring air velocities using a forward-scatter LDV system. The velocity measurements were taken at several different azimuth and axial sections inside the deck. The measured velocity distributions clarified the air flow pattern caused by the rotating blades and demonstrated the effects of deck and blade designs. A high-speed video camera and a sound level meter were used for flow visualization and noise level measurement. In the computational works, two-dimensional blade shapes at several arbitrary radial sections have been selected for flow computations around the blade model. For three-dimensional computation applied a non-inertia coordinate system, a flow field around the entire three-dimensional blade shape is used to evaluate flow patterns in order to take radial flow interactions into account. The computational results were compared with the experimental results.

In order to fill the holes with complex shapes in the large polygon model, a new approach which is based on the implicit surface interpolation method combined with domain decomposition method is presented. In the present study, a surface is constructed by creating smooth implicit surface from the incomplete polygon model through which the surface should pass. In the method an implicit surface is defined by a radial basis function, a continuous scalar-valued function over the domain $R^3$ The generated surface is the set of all points at which this scalar function takes on the value zero and is created by placing zero-valued constraints at the vertices of the polygon model. In this paper the well-known domain decomposition method is used in order to treat the large polygon model. The global domain of interest is divided into smaller domains where the problem can be solved locally. LU decomposition method is used to solve a set of small local problems and their local solutions are combined together using the weighting coefficients to obtain a global solution. In order to show the validity of the present study, various hole fillings are carried out fur the large and complex polygon model of arbitrary topology.
The analysis system implementing a serial process from structural vibration to sound radiation has been developed using both the power flow finite element method (PFFEM) known as a new vibrational analysis technique in medium to high frequency ranges and the acoustic boundary element method (BEM) which is effective in analyzing the sound radiation problems. The vibration analysis for arbitrary shape structures composed of plates is performed, and using the vibration energy density obtained from this analysis as the velocity boundary conditions for an acoustic analysis, vibro-acoustic analysis has been processed. To verify the developed system, we select a simple structure model and compare the results of developed system with those of SYSNOISE, and also the developed system is applied for the vibro-acoustic analysis of various structures in shapes.
In this study, an extended Kantorovich method, employing multi-term displacement functions, is applied to analyze the vibration problem of symmetrically laminated plates with arbitrary boundary conditions. The vibration behaviors of laminated plates are determined based on the variational principle of total energy minimization and the iterative Kantorovich method. The out-of-plane displacement is represented in the form of a series of a sum of products of functions in x and y directions. With a known function in the x or y directions, the formulation for the variation of total potential energy is transformed to a set of governing equations and a set of boundary conditions. The equations and boundary conditions are then numerically solved for the natural frequency and vibration mode shape. The solutions are verified with available solutions from the literature and solutions from the Ritz and finite element analysis. In most cases, the natural frequencies compare very well with the reference solutions. The vibration mode shapes are also very well modeled using the multi-term assumed displacement function in the terms of a power series. With the method used in this study, it is possible to solve the angle-ply plate problem, where the Kantorovich method with single-term displacement function is ineffective.

The geometrical efficiency of a source-to-detector configuration is considered to be necessary in the calculation of the full energy peak efficiency, especially for NaI(Tl) and HPGe gamma-ray spectroscopy detectors. The geometrical efficiency depends on the solid angle subtended by the radioactive sources and the detector surfaces. The present work is basically concerned to establish a new mathematical approach for calculating the solid angle and geometrical efficiency, based on conversion of the geometrical solid angle of a non-axial radioactive point source with respect to a circular surface of the detector to a new equivalent geometry. The equivalent geometry consists of an axial radioactive point source with respect to an arbitrary elliptical surface that lies between the radioactive point source and the circular surface of the detector. This expression was extended to include coaxial radioactive circular disk source. The results were compared with a number of published data to explain how significant this work is in the efficiency calibration procedure for the γ-ray detection systems, especially in case of using isotropic radiating γ-ray sources in the form of point and disk shapes.
In this paper, 3D model-based interactive gamma ray shielding package (MIGSHIELD) is developed in virtual reality platform for windows operating system. In MIGSHIELD, the computational methodology is based on point kernel algorithm (PK), several key parameters of PK are obtained using new technique and new methods. MIGSHIELD has interactive capability with virtual world. The main features made in the MIGSHIELD are (i) handling of physical information from virtual world, (ii) handling of arbitrary shapes radioactive source, (iii) calculating the mean free path of gamma ray, (iv) providing interactive function between PK and virtual world, (v) making better use of PK for virtual simulation, (vi) plug and play. The developed package will be of immense use for calculations involving radiation dose assessment in nuclear safety and contributing to fast radiation simulation for virtual nuclear facilities.

An algorithm and its computer program were developed for the computer aided automatic conversion from 2-D design drawing, which includes arbitrary curves, to a 3-D object, and the 3-D object obtained from the developed program was used to generate the tool path of NC milling machine. The algorithm and its computer program developed were applied to several real objects for their feasibility check and showed satisfactory results. Therefore, it was proved that the algorithm and its program developed can be applied to the CAM for the mechanical parts having arbitraily curved shapes by automatically generating its 3-D object. As a result of this study a basic theory for the integration of CAD/CAM was established which will prompt the improved quality and productivity.

In this paper, the equations of motion of a Bernoulli-Euler cantilever beam fixed on a moving cart and carrying a lumped mass concentrated at an arbitrary position along the beam is derived. The motion of the beam-mass-cart system is analyzed through unconstrained modal analysis, and a unified characteristic equation for calculating the natural frequencies of the system is obtained. The changes of natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes with respect to the changes in mass ratios of the system and to the concentrated position of the lumped mass are investigated with the frequency equation, which can be generally applied to this kind of systems. The exact and assumed-mode solutions including the dynamics of the base cart are obtained, and the open-loop responses of the system by arbitrarily designed forcing function are given by numerical simulations. The results match well with physical phenomena even at the extreme cases where the concentrated mass is attached to the bottom and to the top of the beam.

A Volume Integral Equation Method (VIEM) is applied for the effective analysis of elastic wave scattering problems and plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions. It should be noted that this newly developed numerical method does not require the Green's function for anisotropic inclusions to solve this class of problems since only Green's function for the unbounded isotropic matrix is involved in their formulation for the analysis. This new method can also be applied to general two-dimensional elastodynamic and elastostatic problems with arbitrary shapes and number of anisotropic inclusions and voids. Through the analysis of plane elastodynamic and elastostatic problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with orthotropic inclusions and voids, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane elastic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids.
Multi-pass shape rolling is performed to produce long products of arbitrary cross-sectional shapes. In the past, the multi-pass shape rolling process has been designed by the trial and error method or the experience of experts based on the empirical approach. Particularly, the design of roll caliber in shape rolling is important to improve product quality and dimensional accuracy. In this paper, the caliber design and pass schedule of multi-pass shape rolling were proposed for manufacturing piston ring wire. In order to design roll caliber, major shape parameter and dimension was determined by analysis of various caliber design. FE-simulation was conducted to verify effectiveness of proposed process design. At first, forming simulation was performed to predict shape of the product. Then, fracture of the wire was evaluated by critical damage value using normalized Cockcroft-Latham criteria. The experiment was carried out and the results are within the allowable tolerance.
