  • Laboratory tests were performed on modeling of in situ remediation of contaminated soils by aqueous solution extraction, thus investigating the feasibility of in situ treatments of soil to promote desorption of organic hazardous wastes. The investigation was conducted using phenol, aniline, quinoline, and 2-napthol adsorbed onto a UH40 soil, and various aqueous solutions were used to desorb, or otherwise remove, these organic contaminants. Decontaminants consisted of deionized water as a reference, hydrogen peroxide, acidy, bases, and surfactants. In situ conditions were modeled in the laboratory by permeating potential extracting liquids through reconstituted, contaminated soil specimens under controlled hydraulic gradients and stress condition through flexible wall permeameter tests. Sodium hydroxide desorbed phenol effectively. Aniline was effectively descorbed by nonionic surfactant. Anionic surfactant remediated quinoline and 2-napthol.

  • Following a severe accident in a nuclear power plant, iodine is a major contributor to the potential health risks for the public. Because the amount of iodine released largely depends on its volatility, iodine's behavior in containment has been extensively studied in international programs such as International Source Term Programme-Experimental Program on Iodine Chemistry under Radiation (EPICUR), Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)-Behaviour of Iodine Project, and OECD-Source Term Evaluation and Mitigation. Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) has joined these programs and is developing a simplified, stand-alone iodine chemistry model, RAIM (Radio-Active Iodine chemistry Model), based on the IMOD methodology and other previous studies. This model deals with chemical reactions associated with the formation and destruction of iodine species and surface reactions in the containment atmosphere and the sump in a simple manner. RAIM was applied to a simulation of four EPICUR tests and one Radioiodine Test Facility test, which were carried out in aqueous or gaseous phases. After analysis, the results show a trend of underestimation of organic and molecular iodine for the gas-phase experiments, the opposite of that for the aqueous-phase ones, whereas the total amount of volatile iodine species agrees well between the experiment and the analysis result.

  • The removal of PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls) in aqueous phase was investigated in the ultraviolet (UV) process, ultrasonics (US) process and ultraviolet/ultrasonic (UV/US) process using PCB No.7 and Aroclor 1260. For PCB No.7 relatively high removal efficiency over 90% was obtained during 20 min in the UV process and UV/US process. On the other hand, lower removal efficiency of 50 - 70% was achieved for it consisted of individual congeners of PCBs containing 3~8 of chlorine atom. It was found that the dechlorination reaction (the photolytic cleavage of C-Cl bond) was considered as a main removal mechanism in the UV process while PCBs were removed by cavitation-induced radical reaction in the US process. No significant dechlorination occurred in the US process. Consequently, it was suggested that the UV process or UV/US process was applicable for the removal of PCBs in aqueous phase in terms of the removal efficiency and operation time. In addition, the application of saturating gas such as Ar and Air could be considered to control redox condition and enhance the severity of acoustic cavitation for the removal of PCBs.

  • Thin films of CdS were prepared from an aqueous solution containing Cd(Ac)$_2$, NH$_4$OH, NH$_4$Ac and (NH$_2$)$_2$CS for photovoltaic application. Growth rate of CdS films was increased with increasing temperature of reactive solution and with decreasing concentration of NH$_4$OH. Optical transmittances were more than 60%, independent with temperature and concentrations, and were changed with thickness of CdS films. Growth films mostly showed the presence of polycrystallines with mixed cubic and condition. The resistivities of CdS were decreased by doping boron and criticial amount of dopant was determined.

  • In order to recover lithium ions from aqueous solution, a novel SAN-LMO beads were prepared by immobilizing lithium manganese oxide (LMO) with styrene acrylonitrile copolymers (SAN). The optimum condition for synthesis of SAN-LMO beads was 5 g of LMO and 3 g of SAN content. The characterization of the prepared SAN-LMO beads by SEM and XRD were confirmed that LMO was immobilized in SAN-LMO beads. The removal and the distribution coefficient of lithium ions decreased with increasing lithium ion concentration and solution pH. Even when the prepared SAN-LMO beads were reused 5 times, the leakage of LMO and the damage of SAN-LMO beads was not observed.

  • For the investigation of the properties of aqueous fibroin solution, the variation of molecular weight by agregation of silk, morphology and difference of molecular weight at pI value was investigated. The distribution of molecular weight investigated using gel filtration chromatography and formation of aggregates were confirmed by using Field emission scanning electron microscope. The precipitation of fibroin solution at its pI value was compared by molecular weight distribution and the formation of fibroin aggregated were investigated. The aggregation kinetics were investigated at various condition.

  • A aqueous solution of malodorants (i.e., n-valeraldehyde, n-valeric- acid, 2-methylisoborneol, and trimethylamine) was exposed to 200KHz ultrasound with a power of 6.0W/$\textrm{cm}^2$ per unit volume in a sonochemical reactor under room temperature and atmospheric pressure condition. The concentration of malodorants decreased with irradiation time, indicating pseudo-first-order kinetics. The removal efficiency of malodorants was about from 50% to 96% decomposed after 90 minutes sonication. At the deodorization, it was determined by triangle odor bag(TOB) method for odor sensory measurement, and it indicated that over 60% of relative odors were deodorized with degradation by the sonication.

  • The catalytic combustion of benzene, toluene and xylene over Pt-based catalyst was investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor system with atmospheric pressure to recycle the waste industrial catalyst for the processes of removing volatile organic compounds. According to the pretreatment condition, the properties of the waste Pt-based catalyst were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Toller). In the carte of air pretreatment, 20$0^{\circ}C$ was found to be optimal, and increasing pretreatment temperature resulted in the reduction of the catalytic activity. When Pt-based catalyst pretreated at 20$0^{\circ}C$ by alto was retreated by hydrogen, the catalytic activity increased by increasing treatment temperature. In the case of HNO$_3$aqueous solution pretreatment, the catalytic activity decreased by increasing the concentration of HNO$_3$aqueous solution. The catalytic activity was seen to observe the following sequence : benzene > toluene > xylene.

  • (4-$^{14}$ C) Cholesterol was administered to the leaves of Solanum andigena during photoperiodic induction. Radioactive products converted from cholesterol were studied by thin-layer chromatography and gas-chromatography. The major products from cholesterol were shown to be esterified cholesterol in lipid and solanine in the aqueous ethanolic phase in SD-and LD-leaves. The radioactive solanidine was isolated by chromatography and crystallized to constant specific activity. Short-day condition did not stimulate the conversion of cholesterol into solanine in the leaves, but both groups of leaves converted cholesterol into solanine at the about same rate. Incorporation of radioactivity into aqueous ethanolic phase of tubers and stolons, containing storied glycoalkaloid, was very much higher than that into lipid phase, contrary to those in the leaves and the stems.

  • Graphite powders were coated with ZrO₂ by the controlled hydrolysis of a DI water, ethanol and DI water+ethanol solutions. The hydrolysis process was carried out with temperature control because of the low wettability of Zr ions to the surface of the graphite. PVA was added to the solution for the enhancement of metal ion adsorption. The surface of the graphite powders coated with ZrO₂ was observed by SEM and TEM. There are two types of ZrO₂ particles with the condition of ZrOCl₂°§8H₂O aqueous solutions were used; (a) primary particles a few nm in size and (b) secondary particles with ∼0.1 ㎛ size were obtained. The graphite powders coated in 50% ethanol-50% DI water solution of Zr(SO₄)₂ㆍ4H₂O have the relatively uniform coating layer and the starting temperature of oxidation was 100℃ higher than the raw graphite.
