Determination of Trace Strontium with o-Cresolphthaleoxon by Electroanalytical method (o-Cresolphthaleoxon을 이용한 스트론튬의 전기화학적 분석)

  • Strontium can not be determined by conventional dc polarography method since it is very difficult to be reduced at the drop mercury electrode(DME) in aqueous solution. However the analytical sensitivity was improved by adsorptive stripping voltammetry in which electro-reduction of ligand in a complex formed between strontium and o-cresolphthaleoxone was performed. Strontium could be determined in range of $5{\sim}30{\mu}g/L$ concentration. This method was affected by coexistent alkali earth metal ions. Consequently ion exchange separation is recommended to analyze strontium in samples.

  • The degradation mechanisms of naphthoquinone-1,2-diazide-5-sulfonyl esters(PGND, BEND and PVAND) of polyglyceryl phthalate (PG), bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin (BE) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were studied by infrared absorption spectra. Absorption band due to C=N=and C=O of o-quinonediazide group decreased or disappeared after sufficient exposing to light. And also, absorption band C=O of indene carboxylic acid was increased. From the results, it may be concluded that the above photosensi tive polymers were dissociated to indene carboxylic acid soluble in aqueous alkali solution. Further, the effect of sensitizers were examined by the variation of intensity in infrared absorption spectra of sensitized and unsensitized samples.

  • Associative acrylic thickeners were prepared by emulsion copolymerization using nonionic vinyl surfactant esters as an associative macromonomer and their rheological properties were investigated. The thickening efficiency was shown to depend on the chain length of therminal hydrophobe and degree of ethoxylation of VSE. increasing the content of VSE enhanced the efficiency of the resulting polymers as a thickener. It was attributed to the intermolecular association of terminal hydrophobes of associative thickener in aqueous solution. The chain transfer agent caused to reduce the molecular weight of associative thickener, resulted in decrease of thickening efficiency.

  • Converter has been slag produced 10 million tons per year in Japan. It is a steel making by product produced in the same way as the blast-furnace slag. Though blast-furnace slag is being used effectively as a concrete admixture, the converter stag has never been used effectively because of the expansion action of contained free lime and iron oxide. This is an important environmental problem in the steel industry. Beta-2CaOSiO$_2$(beta-C$_2$S) is contained 40 percent in converter slag, therefore it is very promising as a concrete admixture. We proposed an accelerated aging processes capable of stabilizing the converter slag in a short time. The converter slag is dipped into alkali aqueous solution after heating at low temperature. It was subsequently ground to a grain size of 75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ , inner 30 percent of OPC. The properties of mortar and concrete using the blended cement were determined. As a result, it has become apparent that the expansion was reduced and long term compressive strength was increased while that at early ages was not so remarkable. The hydration exotherm rate was lower than that of the OPC.

  • The process of coprecipitation of biocomposite hydroxyapatite/chitosan from aqueous solution at low temperature in alkali environnement was examined. We have shown that initially we have the formation of amorphous octocalcium phosphates $(Ca_8(HPO_4)(PO_4)_5,\;nH_2O:\;OCP)$ and the transferring from OCP to amorphous calcium phosphate $(Ca_9(PO_4)_3,\;nH_2O:\;TCP)$, and then from TCP to calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite $(Ca_{10-X}\;(HPO_4)_X(PO_4)_{6-x}(OH)_{2-X}\;:\;ACP)$ and hydroxyapatite $(Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2\;:\;HAP)$. The transformation of ACP to HAP was inhibited in the presence of chitosan. The result suggests that there is an affinity binding between ACP and chitosan and subsequently blocking the active growth site of ACP.

  • Cement is pointed out as the main cause of carbon dioxide emission in the construction industry. Many researchs are underway to use blast furnace slag, an industrial by-product, as a substitute for cement to reduce carbon dioxide emitted during the manufacturing the cement. When blast furnace slag is used as a substitute for cement, it has advantages such as long-term strength and chemical resistance improvement. However, blast furnace slag has a problem that makes initial strength low. This is due to the impermeable film on the surface created during the production of blast furnace slag. The created film is known to be destroyed in an alkaline environment, and based on this, previous studies have suggested a solution using various alkali activators. But, alkali activator is dangerous product since it is a strong alkaline material. And it has the disadvantage in price competitiveness. In this study, an experiment was conducted to improve the initial hydration reactivity of the blast furnace slag to secure the initial strength of the mortar substituted with the blast furnace slag and to check whether the carbonation resistance was increased. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the mortar using alkaline water showed higher strength than the mortar using tap water, and there were more hydration products generated inside. In addition, it was confirmed that the mortar using alkaline water as a compounding water had high carbonation resistance.

Interfacial Properties of Imidazoline Cationic Surfactant (Imidazoline 양이온 계면활성제의 계면 특성)

  • In this study, interfacial properties were measured for imidazoline type cationic surfactant system which has been widely used as a fabric softener, a dispersant, an anti-static agent, a bleach activator, and an emulsifier. The CMC of imidazoline surfactant was near $6{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$ and the surface tension at CMC was about 32 mN/m. It was found that surface tension was not affected by surfactant concentration but decreased with an increase in pH. The interfacial tension between 1 wt% aqueous solution and n-dodecane was shown to be about 0.01 mN/m and equilibration time was not affected by pH. Phase behavior experiment in a binary aqueous surfactant system showed that only micellar solution of $L_1$ phase was found under conditions of temperature and pH investigated during this study. Only a two-phase region consisting of lower-phase microemulsion in equilibrium with excess oil phase existed under the same conditions, when oil was added to the binary surfactant system. The foam stability measured with 1 wt% surfactant solution increased with pH, which is consistent with surface tension measurement result. QCM(quartz crystal microbalance) measurement showed that surfactant adsorption increased with surfactant concentration but decreased with pH. According to the friction measurement, best fabric softening effect by imidazoline surfactant system was found under alkali conditions.

Lead Ion Selective Solid Contact Electrode based on Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide ionophore (Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide를 ionophore로 이용한 납 이온 선택성 poly(aniline) 고체 접촉 전극)

  • Lead (II) ion selective poly(aniline) solid contact electrode based on Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide ionophore as a sulfur containing sensing material is successfully developed. The electrode exhibits good linear response of 25.6 mV / decade (at $20{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$, r2=0.995) within the concentration range of $1.0{\times}10^{-1}{\sim}4.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M Pb (II). The composition of this electrode was Ionophore : PVC : dioctylphthalate : potassiumtetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate : Oleic acid = 5.0 : 20.0 : 25.0 : 4.0 : 5.0. When we consider the results of using different composition electrodes based on only one potassiumtetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate or Oleic acid liphophlic additive, poly(aniline) solid contact electrode based on Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide ionophore with potassiumtetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate and Oleic acid liphophlic additive had the best result in response characteristics. The electrode shows good selectivity for lead (II) ion in comparison with alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions. This electrode is suitable for use with aqueous solutions of pH 3.0 ~ 7.0 and their standard deviation in the measured emf differences was ${\pm}2.94$ mV at Tris buffered lead sample solution of $1.0{\times}10^{-2}$ M and ${\pm}2.82$ mV at Tris buffered lead sample solution of $1.0{\times}10^{-3}$ M. Their stabilization time was less than 710 s. and response time was less than 16 s.

Preparation of Visible-light Active TiO2 Nanotubes by Solution Method (액상법에 의한 가시광감응성 티타니아 나노튜브의 제조)

  • N-doped $TiO_2$nanotubes have been newly prepared by two stage sol-gel and strong-alkali hydrothermal process using $TiCl_4$ and hydrazine/ammonia aqueous solution as raw materials. These nanotubes revealed a well developed anatase crystalline phase and perfect nanotube morphology with the diameter around 10nm and the wall thickness below 3 nm. Also, they showed a superior visible light activity and yellowish color due to the light absorption redshifted by ~35 nm and ~25 nm compared to undoped $TiO_2$ nanotubes and anatase nanoparticles, respectively.

Tallium(I) Ion-Selective Electrodes Based on Crown Ethers (크라온에테르를 이용한 탈륨(I) 이온 선택성 전극)

  • Poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) membrane electrodes based on the lipophilic neutral carrier, dibenzo-18-crown-6(DB18C6) and benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5) as the active sensors for Tl$^+$ ion have been prepared and tested in different content of the potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate (KTClPB) as lipophilic salt. Dioctyl adipate (DOA), 2-nitrophenyl phenyl ether (NPPE) and o-nitrophenyl actyl ether (NPOE) were used as plasticizing solvent mediators. Electrodes exhibited good linear responses of 40∼55 mV decade$^{-1}$ for Tl$^+$ ion within the concentration ranges 10$^{-1}$∼10$^{-5}$M TlNO$_3$. Selectivity coefficients of interfering ions (alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and some transition metal ions) for Tl$^+$-ISE were determined by separate solution method and were sufficiently small for most of them. These crown ether type ion-selective electrodes are suitable for use with aqueous solution at pH > 3.
