  • Objective: The community has implemented a variety of exercise programs for the elderly population. However, studies comparing changes in the cardiovascular system through body composition and blood analysis after applying aqua aerobic exercise are insufficient. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a 12 weeks aqua exercise on body composition and cardiovascular index in elderly women. Design: Non-equivalence pre-post design. Methods: Thirty elderly women were assigned to aquarobic group(n=15) and control group(n=15). The aquarobic exercise was 60 minutes per every session, 2times per week, for 12weeks. Weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol were measured before and after the exercise program. Paired and independent t-tests were performed using SPSS program. Results: The result showed was weight(p<0.05), body fat percentage(p<0.05), total cholesterol(p<0.05), triglyceride(p<0.05), HDL cholesterol(p<0.05), and LDL cholesterol(p<0.05) were significantly decreased and skeletal muscle mass(p>0.05) was not significantly increased after aquatic exercise program. Conclusions: According to the study result, aqua exercise program made a positive effect in the improvement of obesity and cardiovascular function in elderly women. Therefore, we suggest that you actively consider implementing the Aquarobic exercise program when operating the community health promotion program in the future. In addition, in future studies, comparative studies according to various ages and genders and studies on the effects of aqua aerobic exercise as a community exercise program for chronically illness patients are needed.

  • Aesthetic impression, structural stability, functionality during exercise, freedom of movement and physiological suitability should be considered when developing aquarobic wear for middle-aged women. We conducted a visual evaluation of the commercial aquarobic wear of the five brands (ARENA, TURN, RALLY, RENOMA and ELLE) with the highest market share and selected three items: one-piece type (OPT); two-piece type (TPT) and whole-body type (WBT). These are the most worn types of aquarobic wear for each brand. The G4 showed the best results in appearance evaluation of the shoulder strap width, front neckline, armhole line, side hip line and short pants length in the OPT category. The TPT had better ratings as the shoulder strap was located in the center of the shoulder, and the front and the back necklines were not too deep. The five items of WBT clothing received similar ratings for each element, so it is considered that the advantages are evenly distributed. No single design was a clear favorite. Based on the above results, continuous research on the development of aquarobic wear that is more suitable and preferable for middle-aged women should be conducted.

  • In the elderly, a lower muscle mass and higher body fat mass are induced by a lower level of physical activity. A negatively changed body composition with an advanced age can lead to a higher falling risk and rate of diseases. On the other hand, aerobic-type exercise positively influences the body composition and hyperlipidemia in the elderly. Therefore, this study examined the effects of aquarobic training for 12 weeks on the body composition and blood lipid levels in obese old women. The subjects (n = 31, body fat: 33.42%) completed a 12 week water based aerobic training at 12 - 13 of Borg Scale of intensity (three times per week, each session: an hour). The body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (Inbody 770-Biospace, Seoul, Korea) and the concentrations of blood lipids (high-density lipids cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipids cholesterol (LDL), triglyceride (TG) total cholesterol (TC)) were determined at pre and post training. A paired t-test was used for data analysis with ${\alpha}=0.05$. In the results, the body composition (% body fat (p < 0.05) and waist circumference (p < 0.05)) were reduced significantly. The LDL (p < 0.05), TG (p < 0.001) and TC (p < 0.05) were reduced significantly. In conclusion, a 12 week aquarobic exercise program helps improve the body composition and concentrations of serum lipids. Therefore, aquarobic exercise can enhance lipolysis using fat as energy to induce an improvement of the body composition and induce hyperlipidemia.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the most suitable exercise for the elderly women by comparing the changes in body composition and physical function fitness after modern dance, aquarobic and combined exercise programs for the elderly women. The subjects of this study were 47 elderly women in J-do, chosen as MDG(n=13), AEG(n=11), CEG(n=11) and CG(n=12) for participated for 60 minutes/day and three times/wk for 12 weeks. The results of grip strength, chair stand, arm curl, 2 minute step, 244cm up and go was significantly than in the control group. Back scratch was decreased significantly after exercise only in the modern dance group and combined exercise group but there was no change in chair sit and reach. These results suggest that various exercises were found to play a positive role in maintaining and improving fitness for the elderly women. In addition, additional exercise programs are needed to improve flexibility and mobility of joints for the elderly. It is thought that it is important to voluntarily participate in a movement that suits your interests to make it sustainable.
