  • A combination of conjugate gradient and Levenberg-Marquardt method is used to estimate the spatially varying scattering coefficient, ${\sigma}(r)$, in the solid and hollow spheres by utilizing the measured transmitted beams from the solution of an inverse analysis. The direct radiation problem associated with the inverse problem is solved by using the $S_{12}-approximation$ of the discrete ordinates method. The accuracy of the computations increased when the results from the conjugate gradient method are used as an initial guess for the Levenberg-Marquardt method of minimization. Optical thickness up to ${\tau}_0=3$ is used for the computations. Three different values of standard deviation are considered to examine the accuracy of the solution from the inverse analysis.

  • Drag reduction on vehicles are the main concern for the body shape designers in order to lower the fuel consumption rate and to aid the driving stability. The drag of bluff bodies like transportation vehicles is mostly pressure drag due to the flow separation, which can be minimized by controlling the location and size of the separation bubble. In the present study, the TURBO-3D code is incorporated with optimal algorithm based on analytical approximation method to obtain an optimal afterbody shape of the MIRA Model corresponding to the lowest drag coefficient. For this purpose three mutually independent afterbody angles are chosen as design variables, while the drag coefficient is chosen as an objective function. It is demonstrated in the present study that an optimal body shape having the lowest drag coefficient which is about 6% lower than that of the original shape has been successfully obtained within number of iterations of tile optimal design loop.

  • The electron transport coefficients in not only pure atoms and molecules but also in the binary gas mixtures are necessary, especially on understanding quantitatively plasma phenomena and ionized gases. Electron transport coefficients (electron drift velocity, density-normalized longitudinal diffusion coefficient, and density-normalized effective ionization coefficient) in binary mixtures of TEOS gas with buffer gases such as Kr, Xe, He, and Ne gases, therefore, was analyzed and calculated by a two-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation in the E/N range (ratio of the electric field E to the neutral number density N) of 0.1 - 1000 Td (1 Td = 10−17 V.cm2). These binary gas mixtures can be considered to use as the silicon sources in many industrial applications depending on mixture ratio and particular application of gas, especially on plasma assisted thin-film deposition.

  • This paper suggests a ratio-cum product estimator of a finite population mean using information on the coefficient of variation and the fcoefficient of kurtosis of auxiliary variate in stratified random sampling. Bias and MSE expressions of the suggested estimator are derived up to the first degree of approximation. The suggested estimator has been compared with the combined ratio estimator and several other estimators considered by Kadilar and Cingi (2003). In addition, an empirical study is also provided in support of theoretical findings.

  • This paper suggests two ratio-cum-product estimators of finite population mean using known coefficient of variation and co-efficient of kurtosis of auxiliary characters. The bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimators with large sample approximation are derived. It has been shown that the estimators suggested by Upadhyaya and Singh (1999) are particular case of the suggested estimators. Almost ratio-cum product estimators of suggested estimators have also been obtained using Jackknife technique given by Quenouille (1956). An empirical study is also carried out to demonstrate the performance of the suggested estimators.

  • In this paper, the electron transport characteristics in $CF_4$ has been analysed over the E/N range 1${\sim}$300 [Td] by a two-term approximation Boltzmann equation method and by a Monte Carlo simulation. The motion has been calculated to give swarm parameters for the electron drift velocity, longitudinal diffusion coefficient, the ratio of the diffusion coefficient to the mobility, electron ionization and attachment coefficients, effective ionization coefficient, mean energy, collision frequency and the electron energy distribution function. The swarm parameter from the swarm study are expected to serve as a critical test of current theories of low energy electron scattering by atoms and molecules, in particular, as well as crucial information for quantitative simulations of weakly ionized plasmas.

  • The basic goal of quantization for probability distribution is to reduce the number of values, which is typically uncountable, describing a probability distribution to some finite set and thus to make an approximation of a continuous probability distribution by a discrete distribution. It has broad application in signal processing and data compression. In this paper, first we define the uniform distributions on different curves such as a line segment, a circle, and the boundary of an equilateral triangle. Then, we give the exact formulas to determine the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization errors for different values of n with respect to the uniform distributions defined on the curves. In each case, we further calculate the quantization dimension and show that it is equal to the dimension of the object; and the quantization coefficient exists as a finite positive number. This supports the well-known result of Bucklew and Wise [2], which says that for a Borel probability measure P with non-vanishing absolutely continuous part the quantization coefficient exists as a finite positive number.

  • Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to investigate the transport properties of self-diffusion coefficients in the penetrable-sphere model system. The resulting simulation data for the product of the packing fraction and the self-diffusion coefficient exhibit a transition from an increasing function of density in lower repulsive systems, where the soft-type collisions are dominant, to a decreasing function in higher repulsive systems, where most particle collisions are the hard-type reflections due to the low-penetrability effects. A modified Enskog-like equation implemented by the effective packing fraction with the mean-field energy correction is also proposed, and this heuristic approximation yields a reasonably good result even in systems of high densities and high repulsive energy barriers.
