This paper presents the numerical analysis results of the viscous flow for a full ship model. The mass and momentum conservation equations are used for governing equations, and the flow field is discretized by the Finite-Volume Method for the numerical calculation. An algebraic grid and elliptic grid generation techniques are adopted for generation of the body-fitted coordinates system, which is suitable to ship's hull forms. Time-marching procedure is used to solve the three-dimensional unsteady problem, where the convection terms are approximated by the QUICK scheme and the 2nd-order central differencing scheme is used for other spatial derivatives. A Sub-Grid Scale turbulence model is used to approximate the turbulence, and the wall function is used at the body surface. Pressure and velocity fields are calculated by the simultaneous iteration method. Numerical calculations were accomplished for the Crude Oil Tanker(DWT 95,000tons, Cb=0.805) model. Calculation results are compared to the experimental results and show good agreements.
A modeling method for the modal analysis of a rotating cross-ply composite beam based on Timoshenko beam theory is presented. To analyze the composite beam exactly, the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia are included. Linear differential equations of motion are derived using the assumed mode method. For the modeling, hybrid deformation variables are employed and approximated to derive the equations of motion. The effects of the dimensionless angular velocity and the slenderness ratio parameter on the variations of modal characteristics are investigated

The hypersonic flow on the stagnation streamline of a blunt body is analyzed with quasi one-dimensional (1-D) Navier-Stokes equations approximated by adopting the local similarity to the two-dimensional (2-D)/axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. The governing equations are solved using the implicit finite volume method. The computational domain is confined from the stagnation point to the shock wave, and the shock fitting method is used to find the shock position. We propose a boundary condition at the shock, which employs the shock wave angle in the vicinity of the stagnation streamline using the shock shape correlation. As a result of numerical computation conducted for the hypersonic flow over a sphere, the proposed boundary condition is shown to improve the accuracy of the prediction of the shock standoff distance. The quasi 1-D Navier-Stokes code is efficient in computing time and is reliable for the flow analysis along the stagnation streamline and the prediction of heat flux at the stagnation point in the hypersonic blunt body flow.

The paper reports on alternative hybrid/mixed formulations being developed by the Structural Analysis Research Group of Institute Superior T$\acute{e}$cnico. These formulations open the scope and increase the power of the finite element method by allowing different fields to be independently approximated, within certain consistency criteria, and by enhancing the use of a wide range of approximation functions. They have been applied to the analysis of 2-D problems, laminar structures and solids, using different constitutive relations, both in quasi-static and dynamic regimes. The fundamental properties of the formulations are identified and assessed and their performance is illustrated using simple, linear applications.

In this paper, we present a set of numerical schemes to solve the Muller integral equation for the analysis of electromagnetic scattering from arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional (3-D) dielectric bodies by applying the method of moments (MoM). The piecewise homogeneous dielectric structure is approximated by planar triangular patches. A set of the RWG (Rao, Wilton, Glisson) functions is used for expansion of the equivalent electric and magnetic current densities and a combination of the RWG function and its orthogonal component is used for testing. The objective of this paper is to illustrate that only some testing procedures for the Muller integral equation yield a valid solution even at a frequency corresponding to an internal resonance of the structure. Numerical results for a dielectric sphere are presented and compared with solutions obtained using other formulations.
This paper presents the analysis of the dielectric characteristics of a hot $SF_6$ gas in a gas circuit breaker. Hot gas flow is analyzed using the FVFLIC method considering the moving boundary, material properties of real $SF_6$ gas, and arc plasma. In the arc model, the re-absorption of the emitted radiation is approximated with the boundary source layer where the re-absorbed radiation energy is input as an energy source term in the energy conservation equation. The breakdown criterion of a hot gas is predicted using the critical electric field as a function of temperature and pressure. To validate the simulation method, breakdown voltage for a 145kV 40kA circuit breaker was measured for various conditions. Consistent results between the simulation and experiment were confirmed.
The three-dimensional turbulent flow in curved pipes susceptible to flow-accelerated corrosion has been analyzed numerically to predict the pressure and shear stress distributions on the inner surface of the pipes. The analysis employs the body-fitted non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system and a standard $ {\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function method. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations. The convection term is approximated by a high-resolution and bounded discretization scheme. The cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is prevented by the application of a modified version of momentum interpolation scheme. The SIMPLE algorithm is employed for the pressure and velocity coupling. The numerical calculations have been performed for two curved pipes with different bend angles and curvature radii, and discussions have been made on the distributions of the primary and secondary flow velocities, pressure and shear stress on the inner surface of the pipe to examine applicability of the present analysis method. As the result it is seen that the method is effective to predict the susceptible systems or their local areas where the fluid velocity or local turbulence is so high that the structural integrity can be threatened by wall thinning degradation due to flow-accelerated corrosion.
In structural reliability analysis, the response surface method is a powerful method to evaluate the probability of failure. However, the location of experimental points used to form a response surface function must be selected in a judicious way. It is necessary for the highly nonlinear limit state functions to consider the design point and the nonlinear trend of the limit state, because both of them influence the probability of failure. In this paper, in order to approximate the actual limit state more accurately, experimental points are selected close to the design point and the actual limit state, and consider the nonlinear trend of the limit state. Linear, quadratic and cubic polynomials without mixed terms are utilized to approximate the actual limit state. The direct Monte Carlo simulation on the approximated limit state is carried out to determine the probability of failure. Four examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed method for both numerical and implicit limit states.
This paper deals with the characteristic analysis of magnetizer for convergence purity magnet by the finite element method. The analysis utilizes combined method of the time-stepped finite element analysis and the Preisach model with hysteresis phenomena. In the finite element analysis, the non-linearity and the eddy current of the magnetizing fixure and permanent-magnet are taken account. The magnetization distribution in the permanent magnet is determined by using Preisach model which are composed of Everett function table and the first order transition curves is obtained by the Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. The calculated flux density values on the surface of the permanent magnet are led to the approximated gauss density values measured by the gauss meter. As a result, winding current, copper loss, eddy current loss of the magnetizing yoke, flux plot, surface gauss plot, temperature rise of the coil and resistor variation, vector diagram of magnetization distribution are shown.
In this study, R/S analysis which was proposed by Mandelbrot & Wallis (1969) was applied to evaluate the presence of the fractal property in the cone tip resistance of in-situ CPT data. Hurst exponents (H) were evaluated in the range of 0.660$\sim$0.990 and the average was 0.875. It was confirmed that a cone tip resistance data had the characteristic of fractals and it was expected that cone tip resistance data sets are well approximated by a fBm process with an Hurst exponent near 0.875. It was also observed that the boundary between layers were obviously identified as a result of R/S analysis and it will be usage in practices.
