  • In this study, approximate design optimization using various meta-models was performed for the structural design of active type deck support frame. The active type deck support frame was newly developed to facilitate both transportation and installation of 20,000 ton class offshore plant topside. Structural analysis was carried out using the finite element method to evaluate the strength performance of the active type deck support frame in its initial design stage. In the structural analysis, the strength performances were evaluated for various design load conditions that were regulated in ship classification organization. The approximate optimum design problem based on meta-model was formulated such that thickness sizing variables of main structure members were determined by achieving the minimum weight of the active type deck support frame subject to the strength performance constraints. The meta-models used in the approximate design optimization were response surface method, Kriging model, and Chebyshev orthogonal polynomials. The results from approximate design optimization were compared to actual non-approximate design optimization. The Chebyshev orthogonal polynomials among the meta-models used in the approximate design optimization represented the most pertinent optimum design results for the structure design of the active type deck support frame.

  • We introduce an approximate fuzzy clustering method, which is simple but computationally efficient, based on density functions in this paper. The density functions are defined by the number of data within the predetermined interval. Numerical examples are presented to show the validity of the proposed clustering method.

  • An approximate alternating linearization decomposition method, for minimizing the sum of two convex functions with some separable structures, is presented in this paper. It can be viewed as an extension of the method with exact solutions proposed by Kiwiel, Rosa and Ruszczynski(1999). In this paper we use inexact optimal solutions instead of the exact ones that are not easily computed to construct the linear models and get the inexact solutions of both subproblems, and also we prove that the inexact optimal solution tends to proximal point, i.e., the inexact optimal solution tends to optimal solution.

  • In this paper, an approximate time-effective approach to rigid-plastic finite element method is presented with its solution scheme and a volume compensation method is proposed to simulate rotary forging processes. The applicability is examined by comparing the results obtained by the presented approach with those by the conventional approach. The approach is applied to simulation of a rotary forging process fur a wheel bearing assembly. The analyzed results are compared with the experimental results.

  • In this paper we propose an approximate method to estimate the cell loss probability(CLP) due to buffer overflow in ATM networks. The main idea is to relate the buffer capacity with the CLP target in explicit formula by using the approximate upper bound for the tail distribution of a queue. The significance of the proposition lies in the fact that we can obtain the expected CLP by using only the source traffic data represented by mean rate and its variance. To that purpose we consider the problem of estimating the cell loss measures form the statistical viewpoint such that the probability of cell loss due to buffer overflow does not exceed a target value. In obtaining the exact solution we use a typical matrix analytic method for GI/D/1B queue where B is the queue size. Finally, in order to investigate the accuracy of the result, we present both the approximate and exact results of the numerical computation and give some discussion.

  • Approximate lofting or skinning is one of practical surface modeling techniques well used in CAD and reverse engineering applications. Presented in this paper is a method for approximately lofting a given set of curves wihin a specified tolereance. It is based on refitting input curves simultaneously on a common knot vector and interpolating them to get a resultant NURBS surface. A concept of reducing the number of interior knots of the common knot vector is well adopted to acquire more compact representation for the resultant surface. Energy minimization is newly introduced in curve refitting process to stabilize the solution of the fitting problem and get more fair curve. The proposed approximate lofting provides more smooth surface models and realizes more efficient data reduction expecially when the parameterization and compatibility of input curves are not good enough. The method has been successfully implemented in a new CAD/CAM product VX Vision? of Varimetrix Corporation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of eigen modes by modal analysis and the application of approximate eigen modes for continuum. This study proposes the appropriate selection technique of eigen modes by modal analysis and the method for the reasonable survey of post-buckling path. And the buckling characteristics of a latticed dome is studied by the application of these approximate eigen modes which have sufficient accuracy and praticallity for response analysis in symmetric and anti-symmetric state of continuous shell. To prove the effectiveness of eigen modes and application of approximate eigen modes for continuum, these results are compared with those of direct method.

  • A development in method of evaluating the measurement precisions using approximate F tests and variance components from expected mean square (EMS) is investigated. The research proposes three-factor mixed measurement models with the fixed and random factors. Unrestricted and unconstrained design work was rarely studied, while restricted and constrained designs have been significantly discussed. The unrestricted and unconstrained designs assume to be an independence of interaction. The proposed evaluation method about the measurement precisions can be extended to four-factor random measurement model or mixed measurement model. The study also presents the three evaluation indexes of precisions such as R&RTR (Reproducibility & Repeatability-To-Total Precision Ratio), PTR (Precision-To-Tolerance Ratio), and SNR (Signal-To-Noise Ratio). Numerical examples are proposed to evaluate the approximate F tests with Satterthwaite degrees of freedom and three indexes using the measurement precisions from EMS.

  • Approximate k-nearest neighbor queries are frequently occurred for finding the k nearest neighbors to a given query point in spatial database systems. The number of searched nodes in an index must be minimized in order to increase the performance of approximate k nearest neighbor queries. In this paper. we suggest the technique of approximate k nearest neighbor queries on R-tree family by improving the existing algorithm and evaluate the performance of the proposed method in dynamic spatial database environments. The simulation results show that a proposed method always has a low number of disk access irrespective of object distribution, size of nearest neighbor queries and approximation rates as compared with an existing method.

  • In this paper, we studied about several methods of testing hypothesis of correlation, specially Approximate method, Empirical method and Bootstrap method. The Approximate method is based on the Fisher's Z-transformation and the Empirical and Bootstrap methods approximate the distribution of the sample correlation coefficient by Monte Carlo simulation and Bootstrap technique, respectively. In order to compare how good these tests are, we computed powers under various alternatives. Consequently, we see that the Approximate test performs very well even if in small sample and all tests have almost the same power in large sample.
