In 2017, aiming at developing, educating, and commercializing innovative appropriate technologies that are suitable for Tanzanian environment, the Ministry of Science and ICT in Korea established an innovative technology and energy center in a Tanzanian university. Using the qualitative methodologies such as an ethnography of a research project, document analyses of memoranda of understandings, journal articles, reports, announcements, and newspaper articles, participant observation of formal and informal meetings, and semi-structured interviews with participants engaging in an appropriate technology center, this study examines how triple helix model in S&T innovation has been applied to the development of the Korea-Tanzania appropriate technology center. Despite growing importance in national S&T policies, only few studies have discussed office development aid (ODA) in association with innovation. The analysis of the appropriate technology center with the framework of the triple-helix model shows the close tie between official development aid (ODA) and the cross national innovation promoted in Korea. This study also contributes to understanding embedded organizational structure, conflicts, and barriers of an ODA project in Korea.

The need for appropriate technology in global health has expanded dramatically as the gap between industrialized and developing countries continues to expand. However, there is no collective knowledge of appropriate technology in global health. Thus, this study intends to provide light on the latest developments in the field of appropriate technology in global health and to speculate on future directions. A rapid review, or simplified technique, was used to systematically identify and summarize emerging papers. The search technique used the keywords "global health" and "appropriate technology." The total number of papers collected from PubMed and Scopus was 427, and 19 articles were thoroughly reviewed for the result section following the research. The study's conclusions included the following: 1) an assessment of appropriate technology adopted in developing countries; and 2) strategies for implementing appropriate technologies in global health. Additionally, we drew lessons and identified problems to serve as a useful guide for future research and development in appropriate technology. This review uncovered a small but valuable level of information about acceptable technology in global health.

In underdeveloped countries, many people suffer from water shortage due to the absence of water supply service. Although water purifiers have provided support in such situations, it is not easy to maintain water filters without a continuous supply of consumable filters. To obtain a sustainable drinking water source, appropriate technology of water treatment is necessary. Herein, a low cost water purification system was developed using natural raw materials. A non-electric water treatment system was developed using filtration through an Onggi filter, which is a type of Korean traditional earthenware with a microporous surface. The porosity and flux of the prepared Onggi filter were 29.06% and 31.63 LMH, respectively. After purification of water with total dissolved solids of 10.4 mg/L and turbidity of 100 NTU, the total dissolved solids and turbidity of the water treated using the Onggi filter decreased by 12% and 99.8%, respectively.

세계적인 전염병의 유행하에서 의료시스템의 붕괴는 시민사회의 자발적인 참여와 새로운 방식의 대응 방식이 나타나고 있다. 이는 보건 위기의 최전선에서 즉시 활용이 가능한 필수적 대응기술로, 적정기술이 더이상 중간기술로 개발도상국뿐 아니라 보건 시스템이 붕괴된 모든 시민 사회의 위기를 극복할 수 있는 기술로서의 역할을 보여주고 있다. 본 Part 2에서는 음압실 및 인공호흡기등 의료용 기구, 진단칩 및 진단기술등과 같이 COVID-19하에서 붕괴된 의료 위기 하에서 신속한 대응책으로 준비되고 있는 의료 및 보건분야에 대한 사례들을 적정기술의 테두리안에서 소개하고자 한다. 기존의 다국적 대기업과 공적인 인증등으로 인한 장벽으로 접근하기 어려웠던 분야에 과학기술자들의 자발적인 참여로 대중화되고 있음을 사례로 소개한다. 최근 사회혁신등에서 제기되고 있는 다양한 오픈과학기술 운동을 통해서, 과학자들과 공학자들이 이러한 질병의 대유행 상황에서, 사회에 소외된 계층의 피해를 최소화하여 사회적, 계층적 붕괴를 막기위한 재정의된 적정기술의 역할등을 설명하고자 한다.

적정기술연구 분야는 환경, 의료, 교육 및 에너지 등 다양한 주제를 포함하고 있다. 따라서, 한 분야의 연구자가 적정 기술 전체 분야에 대한 연구 동향을 파악하기에는 어려움이 있다. 소셜 네트워크 분석, 즉, 사회 연결망 분석은 네트워크에 어떤 전체적인 연결관계가 있는지를 분석하여 특정 관계망을 보기 쉽게 시각화 하거나 인사이트를 도출할 수 있는 방법이다. 이 논문에서는 소셜 네트워크 분석을 적정기술학회에서 개최한 2017-2019년까지의 적정기술 국제학회 초록집 자료를 이용하여 적정기술 분야의 학술 동향을 파악하고자 하였다. 적정기술학회에서 확보한 자료를 바탕으로 데이터 전처리 과정을 거쳐 공저자 네트워크를 분석하고 그와 관련된 통계적 지표를 해석하였다. 또한, 적정기술학회의 일반 현황 자료를 기반으로 연차별 발표자 및 연구 내용 변화를 분석하고 결과를 도출하였다.

이 논문의 목적은 국제개발협력의 유력한 전략으로 평가받고 있는 적정기술 사업화 모델을 라오스-한국 적정과학기술거점센터(LKSTC) 사례로 검토하는 것이다. LKSTC는 농식품 분야의 세척·수처리·살균기술, 재생에너지 분야의 피코 수력 발전기, 피코-태양광 하이브리드 시스템, 에너지 원격모니터링 기술을 개발했다. 적정기술 사업화는 카이펜 마을 기업, 학교기업, 사회적 기업을 창업했다. 정책적 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개도국 적정기술 사업화는 수원국 정부의 지역개발 정책과 연계성을 높여야 한다. 둘째, 시장리스크를 최소화하기 위해 혁신적 기술개발 및 현지 창업네트워크를 적절히 구축해야 한다. 마지막으로 사업의 지속가능성을 높이기 위한 중장기적인 노력이 필요하다.

2019년말 발생한 COVID-19이 세계적 대유행으로 확산되면서, 선진국과 개발도상국을 가리지 않고 전세계의 의료 시스템을 동시에 무너뜨리는 초유의 사태로 나타나고 있다. 대부분의 시민 사회에서 개인의 보호장구의 부족, 클러스터가 된 지역사회의 격리, 진단과 치료에 필요한 의료시스템의 중단, 사회적 격리로 인한 교육 및 경제활동의 중단 등, 초연결 사회를 지향하던 시민사회가 경험해보지 못한 새로운 위기에 직면하고 있다. 효과적인 대응에 필수적인 개인 보호장비 (PPE), 제독 및 방역 도구, 신속하고 정밀한 대규모 진단, 환자 치료에 필요한 의료기기, 사회적 고립에서 활용될 수 있는 정보의 분석과 연결망 등은 선진국과 개발도상국을 가리지 않고 COVID-19 상황에서 필수적인 사회적 인프라임이 확인되고 있다. 본 Part 1에서는 최근 적정기술로 위기를 극복하기위한 개인보호장구와 개인 및 지역사회의 방역에 대한 사례, 그리고 ICT를 이용한 빅데이터 및 정보활용기술등을 적정기술의 테두리안에서 소개하고자 한다.

In general, solid waste arises from lots of human activities such as domestic, agricultural, industrial, commercial, waste water treatment, construction, and mining activities etc. If the waste is not properly disposal and treated, it will have a negative impact to the environment, and hygienic conditions in urban areas and pollute the air with greenhouse gases (GHG), ground water, as well as the soil and crops. In this paper, the Carbon Resources Recycling Appropriate Technology Center feasibility studies are reported at Bantayan Island, Philippines on the municipal solid waste management. The present objective of our study is to characterize the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash and case study of MSWI production status in Bantayan, Philippines. Currently, wide variety of smart technologies available for MSWI management in developed countries. Recycling is the other major alternative process for MSWI landfill issues. In this paper, the feasibility studies of applied appropriate technologies for the municipal solid waste generation in Bantayan Island, Philippines are reported.

The concept of the design thinking can be effective in engineering design process especially in developing the appropriate technology product. In this paper we analyze the student's design activities during the 'Creative and Integrated Design Academy for the other 90%' to solve the problems in the developing countries from the perspective of the design thinking. Based on this analysis we propose the direction of the creative and integrated design activities to solve the appropriate technology products and also the direction of the future engineering design process.
